    H-Huh?

Consciousness came back to him in soft pulses, each beat of his heart carrying a little piece of him from the well of darkness into which he had fallen. The cold was the first thing he felt, the gentle tapping of rain patting across his skin like tiny pinpricks to shock his senses alight. For a time, he was content to simply lay there in the grass and listen to the sweet music of rain falling against the leaves.

All at once, Ehoron’s eyes snapped open and he bolted upright before immediately he rolled to one side and violently emptied his stomach. Bile stung his throat and a throbbing pain sprung up abruptly just behind his eyes; all the while, he coughed and shuddered in wracking pain, wondering why it was that the gods hated him so.

He did not need to roll onto his back and continue on to his right to see what was hidden just behind the bush he had fallen in front of. Even through the rain, he could taste the sharp, coppery flavor in the air. No peal of thunder could obscure the dying moans, nor the sharp, blinding flashes of light hide the bodies long enough to forget it.

It came to him in a rush; the faces of the men who had taken up arms against the monsters, the screams as they tried desperately to defend their farmlands and families. A cry began to well up from his chest but choked halfway out of his throat as he rolled in the mud. He remembered taking up arms to help them, to give strength to their cause and see to it that their families lived to see another bright dawn. Victory seemed assured and they began giving up their cries of joy and thanks.

Then he felt it; that sick, oily taint that roiled in the pit of his stomach. He stumbled and convulsed as that foulness seeped over his every sense and feeling. In a far off distance, perhaps in another life even, he could hear their concern; how they worried for him, that their savior might have taken a grievous blow...

“W-Why….?” The question came out of his lips in a raspy croak, too dim to be a question for anyone apart from himself. “Why must others suffer… for my sins….” He struggled to open his eyes, and for a heart’s beat, those green orbs were left to search the pallid sky for an answer that did not come.

Trinity peered up at the sky warily from where she huddled under a wood awning that protected her from the sudden rain. It had been sunny only a few moments ago, not that anyone had taken notice during the attack. The monstrous, ape like creatures had broken up the daily minutiae of the village and brought a call to arms for all available residents to fight for their home.

The young woman had stayed behind for a number of reasons. The first of which was that this wasn’t her home. In fact, Trinity had no home. She was a wanderer, poor and usually confused due to great lapses in her memory. Often she woke up some place without knowing where she was or remembering how she’d gotten there, such as now. She also feared violence of any kind, and would not get involved with fighting unless she absolutely had to. Furthermore, many of the villagers here had taken pity on her enough to give her some food and show her kindness, and she knew that if she used some of her strange magic they would only shun her out of horror.

So she’d stayed back, a scared woman huddling in any spot that would provide her shelter and some semblance of safety while others fought. She had worried and fidgeted, barely resisting the urge to just flat out run away from the village entirely -- mostly because she wasn’t sure if she would run into more of those monsters once outside the village limits.

Unlike her, however, another mage had stepped up to protect the people here. He’d fought the creatures valiantly, much to the villager’s gratitude, but seemed to have taken a serious blow by the end of it. Something had happened, something magical that affected everything around them. Animals that weren’t tethered down bolted in fear, and faster than one could blink the temperature dropped so low that clouds formed and it started to pour rain.

Everyone had scrambled for shelter, trying to get out of the thunder and lightning, but eyes were still on the man laying in the mud outside the village, close enough to see but not so close that they could understand what was going on with him. Nearly everyone from the village was too spooked by the sudden change in the air to know what to do next.

Trinity was not. Recognizing that the man needed help, and knowing that he was in danger by being outside during a thunderstorm, she bolted into the rain and made her way out toward him as quickly as possible. Fighting she was terrified of, but she could and certainly would go out there to retrieve him and try to bring him back before more of those things came out, before he could get more hurt.

By the time she got to him, he was laying in the mud. There were bodies everywhere around him, as well as a pile of filth from his stomach rejecting its most recent contents. As she got close to him, she slowed from a run to a jog, and then to a cautious walk. The last thing she wanted was to spook him into attacking her while he was too battle worn to realize she wasn’t trying to hurt him.

Carefully, she came into his field of vision: a woman in her early twenties with long two toned hair and similarly mismatching eyes that currently held a great deal of concern in their gaze. The clothes she wore were hardly more than a step or two above rags, and clearly stolen as they were a couple sizes too big for her and smudged and wrinkled like she hadn’t cleaned them in a while.

Caring not for the garments she wore, Trinity knelt right down next to him in the mud and put a hand on his shoulder. If he could, she would help him sit up. She didn’t say anything to him. Instead, she took a look at his mud covered, wearied form and tore the oversized shirt off over her head, leaving her in a small black undershirt that did little more than cover up her chest. Trinity draped the shirt over his head and held it there in an attempt to keep the rain off his face at the very least, waiting for word or some sign from his as to whether he was going to need help getting up and getting back to the village.

Please forgive me if I don’t talk much at times. It’s loud enough in my head.

To Hunt Monsters; But Who Is The Monster Here? Empty Re: To Hunt Monsters; But Who Is The Monster Here?

Post by Emory Aldwyn 14th February 2019, 11:42 am

Again and again, his mind forced those memories forward. Each danced at the forefront of his thoughts, a cruel caricature depicting his attempts at valor and heroism. Even so distorted, there was no mistaking the stark terror that rent the air of victory and celebration when those unlucky few saw the tendrils snake out from his back. It all happened so fast, there wasn't even a time to shout a warning or scream in abject horror. Those closest were simply struck down as the enervating strikes claimed soul after innocent soul.

In a perverse sense of irony, it was in that moment when he should have been incapable of feeling anything for his wretched self that Ehoron had felt the most alive in weeks. Though the oily mass that continued to slaughter around him could not be considered truly apart of his body, he nevertheless felt everything through it; the icy water that began to fall, the softness of cloth and flesh sundered violently. Every beating of his heart fanned a flame in the very core of his being that loudly declared himself to be a living being, even as so many died horrible deaths around him.

And just as quickly as it had started, it was over. The dark mass receded into his body and the surviving people were left to flee for their lives.

The hollowness that followed was all-encompassing; he felt neither the rain nor winds as they wiped around him. The agonized moans of the dying did not stir a feeling; only a faint feeling of regret panged his heart, and just barely at that. It was a cruel occurrence made more frequent in recent months. Every time he attempted to be a hero for the people, helping others who desperately needed help and whom he could help with his mage abilities, it seemed to turn out disastrously.

Movement from the corner of one eye caught his attention, although Ehoron still could not muster the strength or energy to move his head and get a proper look at them. Instead, he simply laid there in a puddle of mud and waited for the end. Rather than an unobstructed view of the sky, he got a young woman with heterochromatic eyes, two-tone hair, and a look of surprising concern. There was something in her eyes, a showing of genuine concern, that shook the bars of apathy that held Ehoron's heart and he forced himself slowly, painfully, to sit up.

Before he could bring himself to say anything, there was abruptly a shirt thrown over his head. He simply sat there in the rain and mud, staring at the dark interior of a shirt. He could feel a small hand hold the shirt to his head as if to shield him from the rain or perhaps an attempt to clean his head of the muck he all but wallowed in. It was fruitless, and utterly absurd gesture to do.

In that single action, there was such an innocence, a pure and unselfish desire to help in any way no matter how small, that Ehoron could not help but smile. For a brief moment, Ehoron did not feel afraid of his own existence; he was not terrified at the prospect of another day still alive to bring ruin and misfortune to others. It did not last, of course; such happiness and reprieves were fleeting. But it was enough to help him regain his senses and sense of self.

He turned and slowly pulled part of the shirt away from his face to get a good look at the girl. The first thing he noticed was the almost expectant look on her face; not as if she was expecting something in return for this token of generosity, but rather a look that said she was waiting for him to either move or say something. It was then, as he started considering what he might say that he noticed that her clothes, if they could be called clothes and not rags, were hardly cut to her figure. In fact, they did not look remotely fit for her, more as they belonged to someone else and she was simply wearing them.

"Thank you," he finally said with an evenness in his voice he didn't feel in his chest. "I appreciate it." Exactly what he appreciated, he didn't elaborate on. Instead, he stood up slowly careful not to teeter over and knock her to the ground. Briefly, his eyes turned to the village. Even through the rain, he could smell their terror. It rolled off the buildings in great waves, thick enough to cut with a blade. They were utterly afraid of him now, and he couldn't muster any energy to try and blame them. It was wholly deserved in this case.

"You should get back inside. Wouldn't want you to catch a cold." Ehoron spoke with a small smile that didn't quite reach his eyes as he adjusted his coat and wiped away some large clumps of mud that stubbornly clung to him. He wasn't quite sure himself what he was going to do now; staying in the village was certainly out of the question. Crossing his arms over his chest, he stood there in the rain and quietly mused to his next course of action.

Trinity had seen everything, of course. There was a reason none of the other villagers had dared to approach the man after all was said and done. It had all happened so fast. One minute he was helping to protect the people, and then another minute there was a black sludge-like mass protruding from his body and killing everything around him, even those he’d been trying to protect. The villagers were horrified.

But Trinity didn’t really seem to care. She had seen scary things before, and though something had clearly gone atrociously wrong, she had watched with her own eyes as the man had tried originally to protect these people, not hurt them. So when everything had gone silent, when the man had collapsed at the end of it all and no one immediately rushed forward to see what had happened, Trinity did.

Even before she was standing over him, she could see the regret in his face and the emotional turmoil in his posture. As she entered his vision he seemed to stir back to life a bit, like her very presence had shaken him from whatever mental struggle he’d been having. He sat up carefully with her help, needing to be tender toward his own injuries, and she had promptly tossed her shirt over his head to block out the rain.

There was a brief pause before he peeled the shirt up enough to look at her again. The remains of a smile were on his lips, but given the situation he was still overall a bit more sober in expression as he looked her over. He thanked her and stood up. She quickly got to her own feet and assisted him, or at least stood ready to catch him if he stumbled. His eyes turned toward the villagers in the distance, who watched the pair warily. With a small smile he gently insisted that she head back in, not wanting her to catch a cold.

Trinity frowned at him. He seemed intent on not going to the village, which was probably a wise a choice. Indeed, the kind villagers looked very much like they wanted nothing more than for him to just leave. She couldn’t just let him go out on his own like this, though. Not while he was injured and drained, not while there was this big storm and possibly more creatures out there.

Shifting a bit on her feet as she thought, Trinity held up a hand to silently ask him to stay put for a minute. Once she was sure he wouldn’t wander off, she hurried back over to the village and stopped in front of the man that was arguably considered the mayor or leader of the place. She gave him an expectant look. “No, girl! Are you crazy? He can’t come in here, he’s already done enough damage.” Trinity stomped her foot angrily, splashing mud all over herself and him. Though she didn’t say anything, he understood she was trying to argue. “Listen, you are more than welcome to stay. You’ve been nothing but helpful since you wandered into our town, but he is far too dangerous. I will not risk it!”

Trinity growled in frustration and then turned away from him and barged toward a building. She emerged a minute or so later with a worn looking pack slung over her shoulder. No one stopped her as she walked back over to the mage. They had no obligation to, as she wasn’t from the village. Instead all they did was shake their heads and mutter to themselves about the strange girl and the terrifying man she insisted on helping.

When she got back over to him, Trinity merely hooked her arm in his and lead him away from the village. Even if he protested, it seemed she had already made up her mind about sticking with him for a while. Reaching into her pack as they walked, she pulled out two bread rolls stuffed with meat, cheese, and vegetables and offered one to him with a bright smile.

Please forgive me if I don’t talk much at times. It’s loud enough in my head.

To Hunt Monsters; But Who Is The Monster Here? Empty Re: To Hunt Monsters; But Who Is The Monster Here?

Post by Emory Aldwyn 21st February 2019, 1:34 pm

Ehoron had a strange feeling in his chest as he walked, or was more aptly led off, with the more diminutive woman's arm hooked through his own. He had seen the looks in the eyes of the villagers, their fear and hate. It was not an unusual thing to see after having an episode near their village. They were not the first to look at him that way afterward, and it seemed unfortunate that they were unlikely to be the last.

But this woman... She had seen it all and did not immediately reject him. There was something in that honest, simple acceptance of him that made him feel... like maybe he wasn't a complete monster. It was a consideration he had long given up on; he would simply bask in the glow of pretending to be a hero in-between bouts of death and chaos, but still knew underneath it all that he was a monster. And now, as he walked and munched on a surprising meal courtesy of his new traveling companion, Ehoron was forced to reconsider such notions.

The village soon passed far behind them as they walked, approaching the deeper part of the forest. The rain had long subsided, though the clouds persisted. Occasional rumbles of thunder punctuated the silence, serving as reminders and warnings to the volatile weather state. Ahead, Ehoron spotted an ape monster that looked at the pair before shuffling off in a panic. Maybe some good did come of this, he thought to himself and allowed himself a small smile in triumph. Even if things had not gone as he would have hoped, some good had still been done. And now, at least for a while, he didn't have to be alone.
