Zachariah arrived in the Rose Garden in the warm midafternoon, when the lines nearly wrapped around the entire plaza. As the temperature began to rise, he suddenly wished he had left his house sooner. His head still ached from the previous night’s occurrences. As fun as a job as the Boomslang was, one too many drinks and heavy dancing can make for a sore and rough morning. First, Zachariah woke up two hours late. Then he forgot some crucial documents at home. And, the cherry on the sundae, he forgot the directions to the Rose Garden. The lines didn’t seem like they would budge any time soon and impatient people began to come in droves. Varieties of people, foreign and local, filled the garden with their colors and new personalities. There were lone wizards and foreigners, families and old couples alike waiting to obtain passports. Zachariah shed his jacket and left it behind with his horse, wearing only the short white shirt underneath. The buttons at the top were left open, allowing his guild mark to be easily viewable. He received the usual stares and whispers, but was much too tired to care for the silent judgments around him.
When he initially pulled up to the Garden on his horse, a stray child approached him and tugged on his shirttail. Short and beyond his line of sight, Zachariah did a double take to find the source of the tug. “Oh…hello,” he muttered. “May I…help you?”
The little girl simply smiled and pointed at Zachariah’s chest. “Wizard,” she said. Zachariah’s lips pulled into a confused smile, and he nodded his head yes. The child then scurried away to a planter in the far corner of the garden. Good god, Zach thought after viewing the sheer amount of people waiting and others arguing with the government officials, people are nuts over these passports. He wandered about the grounds, searching for a shorter line for wizards. Alas, there was none, and he started for the line with everyone else. Though, after a near hour of unmoving, he decided to peer around the people in front of him to see what the holdup was. An angry pair of mothers were heartily arguing over their spot in line, and the other wizards around them seemed to pay no mind. The other, patiently waiting people in line appeared to afraid to step in between. Zachariah, whose stamina was now running thin, was not having it. After standing around all afternoon, his legs tingled back to conscientiousness when he walked over.
“Hey! Break it up ladies!” he shouted and pulled the two women apart. They shouted obscenities both at him and at each other. The woman on his right reached out and scratched him across the face. Now that’s the straw that breaks the camel’s back, he thought. Light collected in his hands, and he threw a Morning Star up into the sky and it brightened the afternoon sky even more. Wizards across the grounds pointed and murmured amongst themselves, and a sudden wave of anxiety and embarrassment washed over him. But, the ladies parted ways, and the lines continued to flow smoothly once again.
“Ah, Zachariah David! We’ve been looking all over for you!” shouted a man from across the Rose Garden. A little girl clung to his side, holding a tiny book in hand. “We’ve got the passport you ordered.”
Zachariah took a minute to process, but met eyes with the little girl and suddenly clicked. “Oh, oh yes! That’s right,” he said. “I had completely forgotten.”
“Yes, yes. Here you are,” he said, and gestured to the little girl. “Come on, give the passport to the wizard.”
Zachariah outstretched his hand, and the little girl giggled and gave him the red-leather bound passport.
