    Job Details:

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Serilda slept well that night. Xiuhcoatl snuggled against her the whole night through, and when she woke up in the morning there was a little bit of bounce to the woman’s step. She woke up a bit earlier than she intended to actually rouse Mythal. There was something she still needed to do, something she normally would have done sooner but didn’t feel right leaving Mythal to do, nor making him uncomfortable by inviting him along.

She brushed her teeth and hair, changing into a clean set of clothes for the day. Then, she went out to the balcony with Xiuh in her arms and floated them down onto the grass. Xiuh was dismissed to wander the grounds and do her morning business while Serilda made her way to the family graveyard. She walked quietly through the various tombstones and markers until she reached the one that read “Hugo Sinclair”. The last few times Serilda had visited her late husband’s grave had been deeply emotional affairs. It was still deeply emotional today, but for different reasons. Her heart still ached for the loss and always would, but she was finally picking herself up and moving on.

The woman would stand by the marker for a solid twenty minutes or so, talking quietly to the spirit of her deceased husband and telling him how her life had been going since the last time she’d visited. She knew he couldn’t hear her, but it made her feel better. It was almost a form of therapy for her, really. By the time she was done, Xiuh had found her and was begging for affection, and for food. Serilda chuckled and knelt down to hug the wolf. “Alright. Let’s go get your little brother and find you something to eat.”

The two of them made their way back to the house, and Serilda picked up the wolf again to float back inside. But this time, instead of returning to her own room she went to Mythal’s. She phased them both through the door before setting Xiuh down and walking over to the bed where Mythal was still sleeping. Serilda had to bite back a laugh. Gren had shifted his position during the night, and was now nestled up against the slayer with his tiny little body, sprawled on his back with his paws fully stretched out in all directions. It was truly one of the most adorable things she’d ever seen, and she took the time while she had it to snap a quick photo with her iLac.

Carefully, Serilda sat down on the edge of the bed next to Mythal, on the opposite side of where Gren was laying so she wouldn’t disturb the little guy. She propped her torso up with an elbow so she could lean over the man. Her nails gently traced lines through his hair to coax him awake. “Good morning,” she’d tell him softly when he roused enough to be conscious. Kissing him softly on the forehead, Serilda continued to draw her fingers along his scalp, or his neck and shoulder. “How did you sleep?”

Post by Mythal Ragnos 1st January 2019, 11:12 am

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

It had been quite the night for Mythal. After his sudden realization that had surpassed all of his defenses, he had almost completely shut down. He wasn’t sure how long he sat on his knees before the door, his mind racing at a million miles a minute. He wasn’t sure when he got up, stripped himself down into some sleeping wear and finally crawled into bed. And he definitely couldn’t recall how long he lay in bed, staring at the ceiling in what seemed to be an ill-fated attempt to sleep. What had truly gotten him over the hump and capable of falling asleep had been his utter and complete defiance to the logic of his heart. No, he was incapable of falling in love. He appreciated Serilda and saw her as the greatest friend he could ever have and maybe, in a way, there was a smidgen of love-like feelings there. But they were not love like the movies or like couples or anything. They couldn’t be – he wasn’t created that way.

Once his denial had managed to temporarily blind him, he was able to sleep. And he slept hard too; it had been an exhausting day and emotionally slash mentally forcing himself to believe in a certain thing had worn him out. There was no shifting or waking up in the middle of the night for the God Slayer – he slept like a damned baby right up until he smelled a familiar scent in the room. It was morning by the time his nostrils flared slightly, taking in the lovely smell of the Voidwalker. He groaned softly as he shifted in the bed, barely feeling little Gren curled up against his leg. He didn’t move enough to move or wake the little guy, though he did give out a groaning little purring noise as he rolled a bit and basically draped himself over Mythal’s foot.

He felt her nails in his hair, eliciting a soft, pleasant moan from him as he rose out of the darkness of sleep and into the world again. Immediately his feelings tried to take control but his defiance and denial was far stronger than the incessant emotions of ‘love’. His eyes fluttered slightly and he turned his head up to see her face, looking down at him. She kissed him and he leaned into it, fighting back the stupid, sleepy smile from the action to absolutely no avail. “Good. Slept right through the night,” he answered honestly. He just didn’t mention the fact that he hadn’t gone to bed right away. He turned a little to look at the windows, wincing at the sunlight. “Can’t believe it’s mornin’ already,” he muttered, pushing himself up a little.

It was then he felt the hound on his foot, the God Slayer turning to look down at the passed out Gren. He smiled down at the pup, who was starting to wiggle a bit more as he woke up. “Guess I’m gonna have to get used to this little guy cuddlin’ me from now on,” he murmured as he leaned his head towards her nails, more than pleased to get the sharp but loving scratches from her nails.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

She smiled right back down on him, oblivious to the war that raged in his head. “The sun often hits a little earlier here, since we’re up a little higher on the mountain.” Serilda gave him room to sit up a bit, though his movements were constrained by the pup at his feet. Xiuh didn’t get fully up on the bed, but she did bring her front paws on top of it and leaned over to sniff her young sibling loudly.

“They are a cuddly breed,” she told him when he voiced that he’d have to get used to sleeping with the furry creature. “So yes, you may as well accept it now.”

Serilda ran her fingers through his hair a final few times before sitting up. “You hungry? I’m sure someone’s downstairs making some breakfast for my nieces and nephews already, so we can probably sneak in a get something to eat for ourselves. Though you probably want to take Gren outside, first.”

Honestly, she was impressed that the little thing slept through the night. He must have been exhausted as well. Most pups at that age were similar to babies, sleeping in bursts for a few hours before being chock full of energy and then passing out again. He probably had to go to the bathroom.

Standing up so Mythal would have room to maneuver, she’d wait patiently for him to get ready for the day, chatting idly. Mostly, she gave him tips on good starting places with training Gren and things he could do to encourage him toward desirable behaviors. Most encouragement involved food, of course. “At this age, I recommend just getting into the habit of walking around with a bag of treats and the clicker. It’s better to focus on encourage the behavior you want and being patient through any bad behaviors -- try to save discipline and discouragement for things that might be harmful or fatal, so when you do speak up he takes it to heart.”

Once the morning routine was done, they made their way downstairs for breakfast. Sure enough, a couple of her siblings were already in the kitchen cooking some breakfast for their children, as the servants weren’t expected to be back until the afternoon. They had whipped up plenty of extra bacon and eggs, as well as reheated some of the ham from the night before, so there was more than enough to feed two more.

They were in the middle of just relaxing and finishing up their food when Serilda’s iLac rang. She frowned and pulled the item out of her pocket to look at it. Normally Mythal was the only one who called or messaged her, as she hadn’t really given her number out to a ton of people. And given that Mythal was here with her…

“This is Serilda,” she answered formally.

    “Serilda, this is Wayland.”

“Hi Wayland,” Serilda said out loud so Mythal could hear the name, giving the man a poignant look. Wayland was one of the representatives of the council that was often involved in recruiting the two of them on special jobs when they came up. “What can I do for you?”

“I’m sorry to bother you the day after Christmas, but something has come up. I don’t suppose you happen to be in Clover visiting your family, do you?”

“I am, as a matter of fact. I’m leaving some time later today.”

“Well, we just received a concerning report from some of the city representatives over there that are looking for guild assistance. I don’t suppose…?”

Serilda started to stand up. “Absolutely. Give me just a moment. Mythal is here with me, let us get to a spot where I can put you on speaker.”

“Oh perfect! I would prefer both of you on this one.”

She motioned for her friend to follow, though with his hearing he probably already heard the whole conversation so far. Leading them down the hall a ways, she brought them both to an empty office and shut the door behind them. Then, she set the phone so that Wayland could speak to the two of them. “Alright, you’ve got us both. What’s going on?”

Wanted! Kayson Warheez Empty Re: Wanted! Kayson Warheez

Post by Mythal Ragnos 1st January 2019, 12:35 pm

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

“Higher up. That’s fun,” he said sleepily as he stretched his arms up, doing away with the aches and pains from the night before. There hadn’t been many from any actual physical exertion but the mental and emotional turmoil he had gone through had done a load on his body. He actually felt tense and bound, which was odd for him. It was also possible that his body had stayed in one place during the night when it felt the pup snuggle up close to him, not wanting to kick the poor guy while they slept. “Luckily I’m a bit more used to cuddling in bed now,” he admitted with a small, tired smile as he glanced up at her. He relished in the last couple of times that she ran her fingers through his hair before he finally sat himself up completely, scooching down the bed so he could reach Gren. “I could definitely eat,” he said as he reached over and rubbed the hound’s back with his fingers. The pup let out a gurgling noise that was a cross between a pleased grumble and an annoyed growl. But his little tail was wagging gently as the God Slayer scratched him, helping him ease out of sleep.

Once he was up, Gren was up. He blinked sleepily and looked about the room, catching sight of Serilda and Mythal in turn before he let out a surprisingly wide yawn. Then he got himself to his feet, shaking himself free of the coils of sleep. He let out small, adorable wuffs as he bounced on the bed, now more rested to fully explore the mattress and its odd comfort. Mythal rose up and stood by the side of the bed, as Gren looked up at him with a curious look. The God Slayer stood completely tall for a moment before he lifted himself on his toes and fell forward. He caught himself with his hands and began the process of doing his morning pushups. He only did these when his body was worn, wanting to stretch and warm the muscles up so they could better operate.

Gren stared down at him as he moved, his tail wagging gently as he tried to figure out what Mythal was doing. The God Slayer couldn’t see it but the hound wiggled his rump and moved his paws in such a fashion that it looked like he was going to pounce. And indeed, as Mythal came up one time, the hound leapt from the bed onto his back, landing evenly despite the awkward fleshy floor his paws landed on. Mythal froze for only a second to look over his shoulder at the pup, the hound looking back as if to ask ‘what are you doing?’. Then the God Slayer grinned and finished up his routine, doing a few more pushups with the pup right on his back.

He lay down on the ground to let Gren pounce off of him and onto the floor, wandering off to fully explore the room. As he rose, Serilda gave him a few starting pointers to how best begin training the hound. He turned to look at her as she informed him that encouragement worked as a better training tool than discipline, as the latter should be saved for situations that could be more perilous. He nodded with her thoughts, dressing himself for the day and then going over to grouping of hound supplies and finding exactly what she was talking about. Better to get started sooner rather than later. He pocketed a bag of treats and released a clicker from its packaging, putting it in his other pocket. Once that was all set, he was ready to begin the day.

Gren seemed to get the idea when he was brought outside, though he spent a puppy amount of time running around and exploring as well. Once Mythal was able to convince the pup to come back inside, they were treated to a delicious breakfast being prepared by Serilda’s siblings. Warmed up ham, bacon and eggs was surprisingly exactly what he needed to calm his mind, his more combative thoughts settling in the rear of his brain for the time being. He even took the time to ask how they prepared each of the settings of food, curious enough to know so he could prepare such a breakfast for himself now and then.

In the midst of all of that, Serilda’s iLac went off. He didn’t pay much attention to it at the time – it was the holidays so maybe some of her family or other friends were calling to wish her a happy holiday. But as she spoke out Wayland’s name loud enough for him to hear, he turned his attention to her as she talked with him briefly. He could hear his voice well enough, the Magic Council Representative explaining there was a job in Clover of quite a concerning nature. He followed her as she waved to him, heading down the hall until they reached one of the empty offices. Once there, they shut the door and Serilda put the phone on its loudspeaker mode, so they could both hear what he had to say.

“Well, the Clover Town Rune Knights are reporting that two teenagers came stumbling into their headquarters early this morning, covered in cuts and wounds. It took some time to coax what had happened out of them but once they were able, they spilled… quite the ominous story. You see, and I’m sure Serilda can confirm this, there is quite the local legend concerning Azure Lake out there. One night long ago, a man by the name of Kayson Warheez snapped and killed all the councilors at a lakeside camp for children. After butchering them all, he simply vanished into thin air and was never caught. Now most people believe it’s just a fairy tail and there isn’t any legitimate documents proving its existence but… these teenagers explained that they had gone to the former campgrounds on a Christmas dare. Eight of them made the trip and once there, they encountered a lot of strange and unexplainable events. Odd sounds, scary noises and they even claim a few ghosts came out of the ethereal. But the most unsettling part is their claim that a man wearing a mask appeared and cut the other six down, the survivors only managing to escape by the skin of their teeth.”

“So they’re claimin’ this… Kayson Warheez did it?” Mythal asked, his arms crossed over his torso.

“Explicitly. The local Knights are trying to keep the entire thing quiet but parents have started calling, claiming their teenage children are missing. I don’t know how much weight can be attributed to an actual spectral serial killer but it wouldn’t be the first time such an oddity has come across my desk,” the man explained, his tone even as usual.

“So the job is go to the camp and confirm this maniac’s existence?”

“Confirm and bring to an end. The Knights aren’t playing around – they want tangible proof that this mad man has been put down so they can ease Clover’s growing tension and help the mourning parents find some peace.”

Mythal looked over at Serilda. “I’m up for it if you are,” he said softly and with a shrug. He knew supernatural phenomena weren’t her favorite and this was seemingly right up the alley of creepy, slasher movie special. It wouldn’t bother him any to deal with a possible ghostly serial killer but it sounded like it wouldn’t be that easy. What they could be walking into was a possible nightmare and he wanted to be sure she was prepared for that. If she was, then they were good to go. But he also felt there was no shame in turning it down. Yet he knew better – Serilda was an honorable woman who would fight her own fears to help others.

His heart gave a small pang and he ignored it as best he could.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Well, Serilda certainly wasn’t going to complain about watching Mythal do push ups. She stayed sat comfortably on the bed while he did he morning routine, smirking at the pup as it wiggled and prepared to jump on Mythal’s back. Xiuh watched the whole time, watching her brother with intense curiosity. With a final wiggle, Gren leaped right onto Mythal’s back. Serilda’s grin widened a bit, especially with Xiuh started getting the notion that clearly this was play time. It wasn’t long before she was also trying to crawl on Mythal’s back with the pup, and by that point Serilda was flat out giggling in her seat, not even trying to stop it.

Her sisters were more than accommodating to instructing Mythal how to prepare some of the breakfast foods, all of which were really quite simple to make so long as he had a skillet of some kind. The kitchen was more than a little noisy, given that between Jenna and Scarlet there were seven children under the age of six. They all talked with each other loudly, or at least louder than the adults did. Serilda showed a surprisingly social side around the kids, smiling and teasing them or helping with their food, cleaning up faces, getting them drinks. They didn’t get to see “Auntie Seri” too terribly often these days, so a lot of their attention was focused on her.

But soon enough Wayland’s call came in, and they needed to move to a different room so the conversation would be more secure and more easily heard. The story the representative told them was a grim one indeed. Sever young adults had been murdered on Christmas of all days at Azure Lake. Serilda nodded knowingly when he referenced the tales that were often told of the lake and how it was supposedly haunted by the ghost of some crazed psychopath. The two surviving kids seemed to be convinced it was Warheez that killed their friends.

Serilda didn’t look too worried about the potential spookiness of the situation, mostly because she wasn’t. “It’s probably just some idiot in a mask trying to use the ghost stories as an excuse to be a sociopath. It’s happened before. No matter, we’ll get to the bottom of it and make sure it stops.” As far as she was concerned, this probably wasn’t anything supernatural in the slightest. Every couple years a murder or two happened at the lake, and people always claimed it was the ghost of Kayson Warheez but sooner or later a real person was always found and arrested for the charges.

“Excellent. When you’re done, report to the Rune Knight branch in Clover. They’ll forward everything to me.”

“Will do.” The call ended and Serilda slipped the iLac back in her pocket with a light sigh. “Well… so much for going home today. Guess we’ll have to take another rain check on those plans.” She smirked at him a little -- he’d know what plans to which she was referring. “I’ll go find my father and let him know we may need to stay another night or two, and arrange for a ride to the lake.” Agreeing to meet by the front door once they had everything they’d need, Serilda went upstairs to find her dad and explain the change in plans.

After a brief stop back in her room to gather her sword and change into more job appropriate clothing, Serilda caught back up with Mythal and the two of them, along with the two dogs, hopped in the waiting car and were soon on their way to the lake in question. By the time they got there the place had already been closed off to the public by a few Rune Knights that were stationed on the road just outside of the camp site. Their chauffeur spoke briefly with the Knights to explain who was with him, and it seemed they had been informed of their arrival because they let them pass through.

It was a bit crazy when they got there, already. The Knights were already doing their best to search the area for evidence. They already had a few areas sectioned off and cones out to mark different points of interest. The servant came around and opened the back door for them. If there were any doubts that the Knights had been forewarned about who was coming to answer their summons for a wizard, they were gone when Serilda stepped out of the vehicle with Mythal.

There was a small herd of Knights running around in the immediate area trying to look busy, and the captain of the Clover branch himself was ready and waiting to greet them. “Lady Serilda,” he said, bowing formally to a woman of her station as etiquette demanded. “Thank you so much for taking time out of your holiday to assist us. I am Captain Bruce Langley.”

He did not offer her a hand to shake, but that seemed to be less a matter of unprofessionalism and more due to his view toward her. All the Knights stationed here and working on this job were well aware of her noble status and that would be more prevalent to them than the fact that she was a wizard. “It is no trouble at all, Captain Langley. Some of my people were killed here last night, and it’s my duty to make sure the suspect is apprehended. This is my friend Mythal Ragnos, a wizard with Fairy Tail. He is my partner on this investigation. I expect him to be treated with the same courtesies and cooperation as you would with me.”

It wasn’t a snobby comment so much as a simple state of fact so that the Captain would understand that Mythal was not just an assistant in this search, but rather someone that the Captain and his men should think to defer to as much as herself. “Yes, my lady. Of course. A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Ragnos.” He did offer Mythal a hand to shake, a show of respect befitting a non-noble.

Serilda did not bother to introduce the wolves, as there was no need. The men here would know better than to interfere with or distract the canines. Standing in her typical tall and straight posture with her hands clasped at the small of her back, she said, “Why don’t you give us a tour and show us what you’ve found so far.”

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Just as Mythal expected – while also slightly surprising him – Serilda had no problem with taking part in the job. But she didn’t seem to buy into the whole supernatural mystery of the issue; in fact, she seemed to believe it was some idiot who was trying to use the legend to his own benefit. It wasn’t the most farfetched idea, considering humans loved to impersonate what they couldn’t be, plus she mentioned this wasn’t the first time a poser had pulled this kind of con. The only way they were going to get any kind of answer was by going there, so agreeing to the job was their only choice in the matter. The Voidwalker turned her iLac off and gave him a slight smirk, stating that their raincheck would need yet another raincheck. Despite the mixed feelings in his body, he was able to smirk back and tease her, “What’re you talkin’ about? There’s pro’lly a divider in the car. Plenty of privacy then."

Obviously he was joking – she would never agree to fool around in the back of her family’s car. But any chance he could get to tease her was one he would definitely take. They agreed to meet at the front of the house, so she could go inform her family of the possibility of them staying another night and so he could go and get the rest of his stuff. He’d already put on his normal everyday outfit and he hadn’t brought his sword so there wasn’t much he needed. He simply loaded up some of the supplies for Gren and then walked down to the front door. Once the Voidwalker came down to join him, they hopped into a car that would take them right to the lake. It wasn’t a very long drive, short enough that only mild conversation was passed before they were pulling up to a Rune Knight blockade.

Once there, they were stopped and asked for identification. Names and guilds given, they were allowed to pass through into the campgrounds. Already the Knights had come and cordoned off several sections of the area, placing lacrima-lit cones and banners to mark different areas of interest. As they stepped out, there was almost a sigh of relief at the sight of actual wizards, including Serilda herself. The Captain in charge of the investigation took the time to bow and greet her like the heiress she was – paid to be well known, apparently. She introduced him, asking that he be treated with the same respect as she was and the captain came forward to shake his hand, the God Slayer taking it and shaking it. “Nasty bit o’ business,” he said, nodding at the lake and the area itself.

Gren wuffed gently as he looked around, his tail wagging furiously. All these fresh scents and people were so exciting to see but he did hang back, keeping himself close to Mythal, as he was the only human he knew well enough. “Stay close to me, eh?” the God Slayer said as he reached down to scratch the hound’s head. The pup wuffed again, a miniscule sound that didn’t really signify one way or another. After all, it was his first day as a pet – couldn’t expect him to understand really any commands. “Do you know where the kids were killed? I’d like to see that first,” he asked as Serilda queried about getting a tour. He wanted to see the carnage, so he could best get an idea of what exactly they were dealing with. After that, he would be more aware of what he was looking at when they visited other scenes.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

She rolled her eyes, though there was a smirk on her face. “We are not having sex in the car,” Serilda informed him, though she knew he was only joking. Or at least, she hoped he was. After what happened in Minstrel she wouldn’t put it past him.

They got to the crime scene and established themselves. Her driver asked if she wanted him to stick around and wait, but Serilda informed him that they were probably going to be there well into the night and there was no point in him just hanging around. So, she dismissed him to head back to her parents’ place, saying that when they were done she would trust the Rune Knights to provide them with transportation back.

Mythal asked the captain to take them to the spot of the murders first and the man scratched his head a bit. “Well, there’s several spots. They kids were all killed in different places. Most of them looked like they were trying to run or hide from whoever was doing this. So I guess we’ll start with the ones inside and then work our way out.”

Langley lead them into one of the cabins. Like all the other buildings here, it was run down from years of neglect. The plant life had grown over the sides of the cabins, a lot of the wood was rotting, and nearly every single window was shattered. There was graffiti both inside and outside the buildings. The camp hadn’t been used in decades, having been shut down permanently when the original massacre had taken place. But, that had never stopped people -- mostly teenagers -- from sneaking onto the grounds at night on dares and putting themselves at risk for something just like this.

Serilda could smell the death before they even entered the cabin. The Knights were still in the process of organizing some parts of the crime scene, and they had decided to leave the bodies until the wizards would arrive so they could inspect them. There were two corpses in this cabin, a male and a female. Each of them had lacerations from a large blade all over their bodies. Serilda knelt down to inspect them, ignoring the grotesque smell and being careful not to step in any blood or muddy the evidence in any way.

And there was a lot of blood. Pools of it around the bodies had merged with years old stains from the many deaths that had happened in these buildings over the years. Rotting beds and other furniture were broken and upturned, covered in dirt from the years and blood from the most recent attacks. She glanced around, trying to see what there was to see.

“We suspect that the weapon was a machete, or something similar. The shape, depth, and direction of the wounds indicate a large slashing knife with a bit of weight to it.” The captain verbalized some of their findings for the two of them as they looked. “We think the majority of the kids were in this building during the initial attack. The others are scattered a bit in the woods like they were running away, and there are blood stains on their clothes from being within close proximity of others being killed.”

The Voidwalker pointed to some blood tracks. “What do you have on those?”

“As far as we can tell, those boot prints don’t match any of the shoes the victims or survivors were wearing.”

Well, that certainly further solidified for Serilda the idea that this wasn’t a haunting. Last she checked, ghosts didn’t leave boot prints. Granted she didn’t know everything there was to know about ghosts, but it seemed highly unlikely that a spirit would leave tracks.

Serilda focused on her Void senses for a moment and felt an out of place shape in one of the overturned dressers. Moving over to it, she slipped her hand through the wood and took hold of the object that was shoved into the back of it, pulling it out without any resistance. It was a journal, old and worn like it had been there for many years. Possibly since the original murders. Curious, she flipped it open and started to skim it for anything of interest.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

“Several spots?” Mythal asked, curious. He had honestly expected to find all the bodies in a relatively similar place. The way they made it sound before, it seemed that the group of teens had been attacked while they were moving in the campsite together. One would assume that if anyone managed to get the drop on them, he’d be attacking them all together. Apparently the teenagers had more of their wits about them than he had guessed. Too bad their retreat had been all for naught. Langley led them toward a cabin, the first place that apparently possessed a pair of bodies. As they walked, Mythal took his time to look around the lake and take in what he could see.

It was a pristine looking sight, with a large body of water that seemed eerily calm considering. There were small docks lined with row boats and deflated, inflatable toys for the water. There were cabins on the far side of the lake too; wooden structures that sat idly and quietly among the trees. The odd thing is it wasn’t just quiet because there was a lack of air – it was like the entire place was paused. The God Slayer stopped his walk as he looked out at the lake, taking a few steps towards it. He hadn’t felt it before but now that he was out among the campground, he could feel an uneasiness that clung to the air. It was like the entirety of the natural world around them was waiting with bated breath, like the entire campground was within a snow globe and the audience outside the glass watched with trembling excitement. It was extremely unnerving, to the point that it made Mythal’s skin ripple with goosebumps.

His attention snapped back and he realized he was standing at the water’s edge. He glanced around, wondering how he had wound up so close to the cool liquid. Now that he was closer to it, he was surprised to find that it was nearly impossible to see through the surface. He bent down and dipped his fingers into the water, wincing slightly at just how icy cold it was. But there was something else. A whisper, some voice speaking softly like it was against fabric, echoed out from nowhere. He couldn’t pinpoint its origin – an especially impressive feat considering his enhanced hearing. It wasn’t words really, or if it was it didn’t make any sense. It was like they were repeating the word ‘key’ and ‘ha’ but in a rhythmic tone, like a child trying to sing the theme to a tune.

He pulled his hand out from the water and the whispering disappeared with it, silencing the world once more. He looked over the surface of the water once more before he finally stood up and went after Langley and Serilda. He entered the cabin just as Serilda was asking about footprints that had tracked through the blood. He had smelled the blood from the outside but seeing it everywhere was daunting. Whoever had done this had practically drained their victims with their slashes. Two bodies lay on the floor, a man and a woman, hacked almost to pieces and surrounded by a large pool of blood. He glanced around the room, the crimson orbs taking in the sights of the age-worn cabin. First thing he noticed was that there was no sign of aggressive intrusion – meaning that whoever did this must have been in the cabin from the start or got in without the others noticing. He bent down and looked over the gashes, observing the depth of the cuts. They weren’t light slashes – whatever the weapon was, it had a lot of strength behind it to be able to bite into the flesh this deep. He narrowed his eyes as he looked at the aforementioned footprints, focusing on the large signs left in the blood. It did seem unlikely that a spirit could leave signs such as that but then again, he had heard stories of spirits leaving tracks in the dust.

His eyes snapped over to Serilda as she walked over to one of the dressers. She reached into the mess and pulled out a book that looked like it had been there for ages. The leather on its front was all torn and broken and there was a fair amount of dust on its cover. The Voidwalker opened it up, unleashing a full torrent of dust onto the ground that seemed to just melt into rest of the grime on the ground. “What’s it say in there?” He asked as he rose to his feet, walking over to her side. He doubted that such an ancient looking book would offer any clues to this particular murder but perhaps it was left over from the older ones? It was worth at least reading into.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Langley nodded when Mythal expressed his curiosity about several spots for the murders. “Even for an experienced killer, taking down eight people at once can be a feat. At least for someone that doesn’t control magic, like we suspect in this case. He attacked most of them at once, but only managed to kill two inside the cabin. Four others ran off, including the two that survived. The two others appeared to have been separated from the group and were outside in the woods already when they were attacked.”

While Mythal stayed outside for a moment to look at whatever he’d found, Serilda looked over the interior scene with the captain, pausing only when she noticed the book. Mythal approached her as she flipped through it, asking what was written inside. “Nothing that will help us here, I think,” she admitted, blue eyes skimming a page briefly before turning it. “Mostly things related to camp life. Activities completed, friends made, plans for the trip… that sort of thing. This must have been left here from the last time the camp was open.”

With a mental shrug, she closed the small book and tucked it away. It could be important to the original murders, perhaps, but this was an entirely different case. She would focus on the present for now, and then later she would make sure the book was turned over to the Rune Knights, knowing at best it would probably just be archived with the rest of the files from back then. “Something catch your attention outside?” Serilda asked, looking up at him.

As Mythal answered her question, she silently gestured to Captain Langley to lead them to the next spot. He preceded them back outside and walked a few dozen meters with them into the trees. Two more bodies were found there, both with frontal wounds. It was obvious they had attempted to fight whoever was attacking them, though it hadn’t seemed to help them much in the end. The scene was near about as gruesome as the one in the cabin had been, just with blood all over the grass, dirt and trees instead.

“According to the two survivors, they only got away because these two hung back to buy them some time. We’ve gathered that these were both romantic partners to the other two.”

“Are they still here? The survivors?”

“No, they’re back at our base waiting for their families to come collect them. They came straight to us, and we haven’t asked them to come back here. Just followed up on their information.” That made sense to her. The two kids were likely traumatized enough, and bringing them back to the place where all their friends and lovers were killed wasn’t going to help the investigation.

Much of what they observed here was similar to what had been inside. Matching wounds from the same attack weapon, a few boot prints that didn’t match what any of the kids were wearing, though the prints seemed to almost ominously disappear only a couple feet away from the murders despite the fact that there had been plenty more mud to trek through.

The last two bodies were the same as the others from outside, though they had their wounds primarily on their backs. As far as Serilda could tell, it looked like this couple had wandered off a bit for some privacy and were entirely unprepared for any kind of attack. Their bodies were slumped almost together, like they’d been killed while still sitting and relaxing with nearly no warning of the danger as it befell them.

At time point of the Rune Knights called the captain away, and he left the two wizards alone to conduct their business, assuring them both that if they needed him any of the present Knights would fetch him right away. Serilda sighed and rubbed her temples. “These stupid kids,” she murmured softly, her words betraying her sorrow over the situation even if her expression did not. “As far I can tell, I don’t think any kind of magic was used here. Whoever the killer was, they seemed to be using mundane weapons… Thoughts?”

Wanted! Kayson Warheez Empty Re: Wanted! Kayson Warheez

Post by Mythal Ragnos 6th January 2019, 12:55 am

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

So Serilda had managed to find an old book from one of the former counselor’s. She described the contents pretty quickly after breezing through it; camp activities, new friendships forged and even mention of a possible trip. All interesting to the avid reader but not to Mythal and not pertinent to the investigation at hand. “Still worth takin’, I guess,” he said with a shrug as he bent down near her to investigate more boot prints he hadn’t noticed before. It was odd – they seemed to come from the wall they were near but there was no door or window on that wall. The prints sort of just… materialized out of nothing. Had the killer been standing in here the entire time and the teens didn’t notice him? It seemed unlikely; there was nothing blocking him from view and there was a good chance these kids had some kind of light lacrima with them when they were investigating. Yet Langley had said they didn’t believe this person was using any kind of magic.

He nearly missed her question, as he was too busy thinking about them. “Hm?” he asked, looking back to her. Suddenly her words caught up to him. “Ah, it was the water. Well, more like the whole entire campground. It feels… odd. Almost like someone hit the stop button on it and left it there. I can’t smell any wild animals; I didn’t see anythin’ movin’ among the trees or even in the sky. Strangest of all was the water. It’s as still as ice – if I hadn’t’a touched it, I pro’lly would have thought it was frozen over. But when I put my hand in it, I could hear… whispers. It wasn’t comin’ from the water or nothin’ – it felt more like it was comin’ from the air around us. Almost like the water is a connection to somethin’ else,” he explained it as best he could, reaching up to scratch his chin. Serilda seemed pretty intent that this wasn’t anything supernatural but he wasn’t certain. He stood up as she gestured for the Captain to lead them to the next pair of bodies, following along and looking around carefully. Something definitely wasn’t right here.

The next pair found had been slashed and run through, though by the looks of them they had put up a fight. As Langley explained that these two had been romantically connected to the survivors, his heart gave a small pang that he quickly squashed with focused thought. Serilda asked about the survivors, curious if they were about, but it seemed they had remained at the Knight headquarters. That was a good choice – chances are they were already traumatized enough. They didn’t need to come back and see what happened to their lovers. He wandered a bit from the site as he followed the footprints, stopping right before they disappeared completely. Just like in the cabin, they came out of nowhere and disappeared without feasible explanation. The ground was still wet enough that the murderer should have tracked steps wherever he went and yet, nothing.

“Where are you going…?” he muttered to himself as they were lead to the last place, the site of the last two victims. While the previous two had shown signs of a struggle or at least some kind of evidence of awareness to their plight, these two looked like they never got a chance. They had been caught while looking for some privacy, each one of them in the middle of undress but still clothed enough to be decent. The killer had descended upon them and taken their lives in one swift stab, pushing it through one torso to the other. He mused quietly at how, based on the wounds, the one that had been impaled on the front probably hadn’t died at first. Poor fool was left to die underneath the body of their lover.

Langley departed for a moment, some of his Knights requiring his attention. The Voidwalker voiced her frustration at the teenagers for taking a stupid risk by coming to the site and frankly, he had to agree. There were certain stories not worth pursuing, as he knew very well now. She spoke her concerns and thoughts on the matter and he nodded. “Not active magic, anyway,” he said, his eyes scanning the surrounding area. There were no footprints on the ground around here, which made it even stranger. “Some kind of worn blade. A dull sword or machete most likely. The carvin’ pattern on the wounds isn’t filled with rust though from what I can tell. Yet whoever did it was still able to bury his weapon through flesh and bone seemin’ly in one strike. Strong son of a bitch,” he said with a sigh. Then as his nostrils took in the smells of the camp, he picked up on something.

He walked past the bodies and around a few trees, finding a small cabin tucked behind some bushes. The door was open, barely hanging on to the rusted hinges that clung to the worn wood. He moved to the entryway carefully, a single fist rose defensively in case something came out from inside. To his luck, nothing popped out and he was able to enter the small toolshed. Woodworking weapons hung on metal pegs all around the shed and several smaller tools and supplies were lying on the work table pressed in the corner. Interestingly though, there was also a book similar to the one that Serilda had found in the other cabin.

“Another journal,” he said, picking it up and showing it to her. He flipped open the cover and skimmed the first few pages, finding similar details in the writing there. But he paused, his brow furrowing as he read a certain passage. “Stanley is at it again,” he read aloud for her. “Annoyin’ brat pissed in his bed again and cried all night. I swear I have half a mind to just throw him in the lake and let him suffer for a bit for all the trouble he’s puttin’ me through.” He scoffed. “Nice to know these councilors really cared about the kids. Maybe they had what was comin’…”

He was speaking the sentence as he turned to face her but the words caught in his throat. There, standing – or more hovering – feet away from the entryway was a ghost. Mythal knew their look well, after his job with Markus in the Haunted Lands. It was an ethereal teenage man, his face gaunt and worn and his clothes tattered and shredded. Old blood colored his clothes a dark brown which still dripped down, despite being made of… whatever ghosts were made of.

“Get out…” It whispered, just loud enough for them to hear. And then it vanished, the particles making up its form fading to dust in the air.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Mythal explained to her the weird phenomenon about the water that he’d noticed, and Serilda frowned in thought. It wasn’t necessarily an impossibility -- there were often times during the winter where water moved so smoothly that it appeared to be ice. However, she knew Mythal more than well enough at this point to trust his instincts about something being off. She still wasn’t necessarily willing to believe that anything about this was supernatural just yet, but she could believe that perhaps there was magic of some kind at work here, just more subtle than most would look for.

Either way, after finishing their tour of the corpses both wizards were in agreement that none of the attacks had directly involved magic of any kind. Mythal was able to deduce that the weapon being used was dull, though that didn’t seem to prevent the murderer from doing his business. Particularly with the last couple, who appeared to have been run clean through together. As she was looking them over, she heard some laughter coming toward the lake and looked up briefly just to see who was there.

She wound up having to do a double take. No one was standing by the lake, but she could have sworn she heard laughter. The woman frowned heavily as she eyed the body of water from afar. Looking at it now, she had to agree with Mythal that there was something about it that just wasn’t right. Her skin was starting to crawl a bit, though there was no logical reason for it to do so. I must be hearing things, she told herself. A quick mental battle was all it took to convince herself that she was just being paranoid, and she turned back to the matter at hand -- though there was a feeling of uneasiness settled in her gut that she couldn’t quite get rid of.

Serilda was busy looking at the two bodies and trying to glance around for clues in the dirt and grass when she noticed that Mythal seemed to have picked up something. “What is it?” she asked, following him to another run down cabin. This one appeared to be more for camp activities than for living in, as it has several tools and tables for shaping wood laid out. Many of the items were rusted from years without maintenance, and practically everything was covered in dust.

But there was also another journal. Mythal picked it up and flipped through it like Serilda had done before, stopping to read a passage out loud. As soon as he spoke the name Stanley, she frowned in recognition and pulled out the first journal she’d found, flipping through it once more. Her face was buried in the book, so she didn’t see Mythal’s face when he noticed what was hovering behind her, nor did she really hear how abruptly his sentence had ended.

“Stanley… Strange, I think that name was--”

    “Get out…”

Serilda near about jumped out of her skin. Her Void senses had not informed her that anyone at all was standing behind her. The only ones in the room besides herself and Mythal were the two wolves, dutifully following their masters around the area. So when a voice practically whispered right in her ear, Serilda yelped and dropped the journal. Her sword was out in a flash, but by the time she spun around the specter was gone. “What the hell was that?!” she whispered frantically, trying to keep her voice down so as not to attract any attention from the Knights back at the main part of the camp.

She was shaking a bit, the light glow from Moonlight playfully tossing some of the shadows about in the building. Xiuh was growling at the spot where the ghost had been, her mannerisms making it clear that she wasn’t at all at ease in this place. Carefully, Serilda reached back down and picked up the book she’d dropped, though she left her sword withdrawn. “Don’t tell me this place is actually haunted…” She didn’t want to believe it, but denial wasn’t really her forte. Her voice trembled a bit with a mixture of trepidation and annoyance. It would be just her luck if they were dealing with an actual ghost here.

She looked down at the journal in her hands, suddenly wondering if perhaps it was a bit more relevant to this case than she’d originally thought. “There was a Stanley mentioned in this journal, too,” the woman told Mythal a bit reluctantly, not so much wanting to keep information from him as not wanting to admit that perhaps there was a bit more at play here than a copycat killer. “Mentioned a bit about him being afraid of water, and the counselor’s lack of success in getting him to learn how to swim.”

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal didn't quite signal for Serilda to follow him, having picked up a scent and rolled with it. Luckily by now the Voidwalker was good at picking up on when he moved and followed him immediately. He honestly should have known that going into the tool shed was a bad idea -- nothing good ever came out of a dark shed full of old and worn possible weapons. They had locked out partially; no one had come swinging at them with a rusty saw or anything. But if the rest of the investigation hadn't set a tone, exploring this particular area had.

That was only made worse by the appearance of the ghost. Serilda had recognized the name he'd said and taken out her own discovered journal to research the thought-provoking name. She never noticed the spirit nor his pause as he discovered it just outside of the shed. She only understood the terror as the spectral man spoke up, his hissing warning chilling her to the core. She yelped, dropping the journal in her hand and arming herself as she spun defensively. But by then the spirit was gone, faded into the ethereal once more. “It was a ghost,” he explained matter of factually, walking to the doorway and looking around. Gren bounded out between his legs, stubbornly taking the lead like he was larger than he truly was. The God Slayer bent down and eased the hound pup back, much to his chagrin.

“Looked like a counselor. Maybe the legend of the murders ain't so legendary after all,” he said as he moved back into the shed, walking back to her. She managed to rein herself in as best as she could, given the circumstances, and picked up the journal once more. She revealed that Stanley been mentioned in her journal as well, though she sounded a bit worse for wear. She clearly wasn't happy that this wasn't just a cut and dry murder. Nothing was ever that easy for them.

“Couldn't get him to swim and apparently it made them grouchy,” he said, holding up his journal. He handed over to her so she could store them together. He rubbed his chin as he looked off to the side, his mind working. “So let's just be safe and say this ain't a regular psycho that killed these kids,” he said tentatively. He knew she wouldn't be happy to explore that realm of possibilities but they had to at this point. “So the killer can move without being detected, seemin'ly through walls and across the ground. Maybe some kind of ethereal form? He doesn't use it to attack; the wounds are definitely made by a normal, if slightly worn blade. But he's also strong,” he tapped this thumb against his chin. “You don’t think…?”

His words were cut off by an ear-piercing scream, a woman's high-pitched shriek of fear. And then there was the unmistakable sound of something sinking into meat, like a weapon jabbing into a body. He shared a quick look at Serilda before he turned and bolted to the door, his magic already surging into his limbs. He burst through… only to find that things had changed outside. The camp was still the same but it was suddenly nighttime, with a large full moon looming over them in the sky. Though the sky looked clear, there was absolutely no sign of stars.

“What the hell…?” He muttered as he glanced around. He led the way back to where they had come, looking for signs of the Rune Knights that were investigating. But as they cleared the bushes and could see the cabins that were formally swarmed with Knights, they found… nothing. No sign of the captain and his men. They were completely abandoned.

“This is not good,” he said obviously. Whatever was happening, they had stepped into it full force. Now the rabbit hole had swallowed them up and if the ghostly snickers that seemed to taunt them from the lakefront were to be believed, they were in for quite the ride.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

If there was one thing anyone could say about Serilda, it was that she had a talent for not letting her emotions get the better of her outside of rare circumstances. Though there was a rising sense of dread in the woman, she fought valiantly to keep it under control. To her credit, Xiuhcoatl moved herself so she could lean against her master’s leg, the weight and the warmth doing wonders to calm Serilda down.

Mythal explained that it had been a ghost, and as much as Serilda didn’t want to believe him she knew she had to. He wouldn’t lie to her, and it would explain why she hadn’t sensed the thing behind her. As her friend looked outside the door and cautiously kept his overeager pup from charging straight outside, Serilda took a deep breath and rubbed her temples, forcing herself to come to terms with an unideal situation quickly.

She listened as her partner carefully started to spitball possibilities with her, knowing she didn’t like where all this had wound up but also knowing it was better to be real about it than not. He was starting to explain his train of thought toward what could be going on when a blood curdling shriek sounded from back toward the main part of camp. It was quickly followed by what sounded unmistakably like a body being hacked upon with a weapon. The two of them looked at one another briefly, Serilda’s face swimming with panic, before they both bolted out the door with the wolves in tow.

As soon as she stepped outside, every survival instinct in Serilda’s body caused her to slam to an abrupt halt so fast that Xiuh actually ran into the back of her legs. The sky had gone from day to night in a fraction of a second. A full moon cast an eerie glow over the area and the sky was free of clouds but there wasn’t a star in sight. She clutched Moonlight so hard the handle was leaving grooves in her hand. “What the hell is going on?!” she asked no one in particular, now in a full blown state of terror despite her seeming of control.

The Knights were gone, as were all the bodies. It was like they had been jumped forward in time -- or, more horrifyingly, backward in time. Even Mythal was not at all pleased by the turn of events, vocalizing his worries over the situation.

And it was only about to get worse.

There was another cry, this one seeming to come from somewhere on the lake. It sounded like a child crying out for help, quickly followed the sound of splashing. Serilda didn’t trust her ears at this point, no longer willing to believe that anything she was seeing or hearing was real, but she knew that she wouldn’t get answers without investigating. Moving swiftly over to the lake, she looked out and around. As she suspected, no one was there.

How were they supposed to deal with this? Even the crap with Lexa hadn’t been this bad. Sure the girl and her psychopath of a cloned sister were creepy, but at least they were real. How was she supposed to fight something that wasn’t tangible? No matter how far she reached out with her senses, the only people in the area she could feel were herself and Mythal. She couldn’t fight something that she couldn’t see or sense, holy weapon or no.

Whatever had them trapped here, it was just toying with them. A sense of helplessness washed over her. There was a small fraction of her mind that realized the feeling was an odd one, but she was powerless to stop it. She didn’t even notice that her gaze was transfixed onto the lake like she was staring off into space, a look of defeat on her face as her eyes slowly filled with moisture. The tip of her scimitar hung limply toward the ground. “What are we supposed to do?” she asked, a sense of hopelessness in her tone that was not like her.

Xiuh pawed a bit at Serilda’s leg, whimpering in concern to get Mythal’s attention -- if he hadn’t already noticed. The wolf knew something was affecting her mistress and making the woman feel things that hadn’t come naturally. It was something the hound could sense through their bond, these foreign emotions that were penetrating deep into Serilda’s psyche like an infestation and taking root.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Their entire world had shifted in an instant, tacking them from day to night and investigation to horror film. Mythal, while not the easiest to be flapped, was certainly bothered by what was going on. Every step they had taken had led them closer and closer to the killer, while also seemingly bringing them further into the nightmare. Imitation killer – that was all this was supposed to be. And yet here they were, cast into an uneasy darkness that even made the God Slayer’s skin crawl. He glanced over at Serilda, who was in such a contained state of panic unlike he had seen before. Even with all the mess that had come from Lexa and her horror show of a job, this was sinking into a deeper mire than either of them had taken on yet. But he swallowed all of that down, the lump in his throat unceremoniously dragged down into the pit of his stomach for the time being. Panicking wasn’t going to get them out of this – neither was giving up. He knew Serilda would be able to catch herself in a moment; he just needed to help her along.

“He-…” he spoke up, starting to get her attention. But before the word could even finish, a loud cry screeched out from the lake, like a child calling out for help. His head moved on a swivel to look towards the smooth, unsettling lake surface. He didn’t expect to see a child flailing in the water and, much to his assumption, there was none. But that only served to make the entire ordeal even more unsettling. Serilda rushed over to the lake’s edge, following the sound in a last ditch hope of finding some rational explanation. He didn’t follow immediately; he glanced back to where they had come from, just in case. If they were truly in this nightmare full force, he didn’t want to turn his back and suddenly have some kind of blunted sword or machete thrust into his back. Once he was sure he couldn’t see anything moving among the shadows, he finally walked over to join the Voidwalker.

But something was off. He could sense it immediately; her stance had loosened, dropped even. Xiuhco was pawing at the woman’s leg, trying to shake her from… whatever was currently possessing her. She muttered something, a query that was as hopeless as her face looked in that moment. Mythal’s eyes twitched in concern – this was not Serilda. This was not the woman he l—cared for. “Hey,” he said loudly, taking her arm and pulling her away from the lake so she could face him. “We’ve seen bad shit before. We ain’t gonna bite it here so don’t go givin’ up on me. This place is tryin’ to screw with our heads. C’mon – don’t let it get in there,” he said, resting his other hand on her shoulder with a bit more affection. “Now these journals are clearly some kinda clue. Maybe if we find more of them, we can—“

This time he saw it materialize, coming at them from the side. Another ghost but this time it was far more menacing. Its face was wrought with anguish and anger. It was moving right towards them, its hands extended like it wanted to grab at them. Or, more like, it wanted to push them into the water. He wasted no time in pulling her around him and moving out of the way of the ghost, causing the phantasm to grab at the empty air. “Go!” he barked, already moving right beside her to get away. He knew better than to swing at the ghost – he’d learned his lesson from the mansion in the Lycan Woods. But he realized that something was wrong – someone was missing. He slammed on the metaphorical brakes and swung around to see Gren, standing his ground, growling and barking at the ghost.

The specter’s attention turned down to the hound pup, its incorporeal hands reaching down towards it now. Still the hound held its position, its fur standing on every end that it could. But before the ghost could wrap its chilly hands around the hound, Mythal was already leaping back, his arm coated in darkness even more pitch black than the world around them. He swung through the spirit’s face and, for just a second, it actually looked like the gauntlet had made a solid connection. The ghost sprang back into the air and disappeared, as if it had been launched from its position. The God Slayer rolled on the ground as he landed, sliding along the dirt and mud until he came to a stop. But something was already wrong; his right arm hung limply at his side, the magic in it dissipating almost instantly.

Mythal groaned as he reached out and touched the arm, feeling nothing as he prodded it with his still mobile hand. “Well that’s fun,” he grumbled  as he walked over to Gren. The hound whimpered gently, his little tail half-wagging in concern. “I’m fine, buddy. Just a little numb. C’mon, let’s go,” he nodded towards Serilda and Xiuhco. The pup wuffed gently and took the lead in front of him as they went to meet up with the other two. “We gotta check these cabins. We need to find more journals,” he explained as he joined Serilda at her side. He reached out with his good arm and touched her shoulder. “Can you sense them with your magic? It would make our lives a whole lot easier.”

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Xiuhcoatl’s gentle attempts to pull her mistress away from the invasive thoughts hadn’t done much, but Mythal physically pulling her around and speaking loud and clearly to her did. Serilda blinked and jumped a bit like she’d been startled back to reality. Her breath came low but quick and her eyes once again filled with panic rather than hopelessness, this time stemmed from recognition that if it hadn’t been for Mythal she might have been in deep shit just now.

The worst part about it was that she hadn’t even felt herself get pulled into… whatever trance that had been. It had crept up on her subtly, and while a part of her had been aware that it wasn’t like her to behave or think that way that part had been heavily muted by whatever had taken control. As he spoke to her, Serilda reached up with her free hand and gripped tightly to his shirt on his chest like she was trying to use his body to ground herself back into the real world.

“You’re right, I’m sorry,” she said, closing her eyes and drawing in a deep, shuttered breath to try and control herself. “Something came over me.” Knowing she needed to get her shit together if they were to get through this, she forced herself to calm down. She was being selfish behaving like this.

The woman was about to reach down and pet her companion, knowing that the wolf was worried, when Mythal suddenly cut off his own comment and pulled her roughly to the side. She turned and this time saw the specter, blue eyes widening in shock and fear. Mythal told her to run, indicating that he was going to be right beside her, and she didn’t need anything more than that. She started running, Xiuh right at her heels.

She only stopped when she realized Mythal had, and turned to see him attacking the ghost in an effort to save Gren, who had stubbornly stayed behind to try and beat the thing himself. The attack worked, but at a cost. Serilda could already see that something had happened to Mythal’s arm as a result of the strike, the limb hanging uselessly at his side. He ushered the concerned pup onward, assuring the little thing that he was fine but Serilda knew better.

She also knew better than to bring it up now. He spoke up asking if she could try to actively search for more journals, believing they were the key to solving this nightmare. So far there had been two, so why not more? It seemed the counselors were required, or at least encouraged, to keep them. If they could locate another then perhaps all of this would make more sense. Maybe. Serilda honestly wasn’t too sure, as she didn’t know how to combat something like this, but Mythal seemed to know what he was doing so she followed his lead.

“I can try,” she told him. Closing her eyes so she could focus on her Void Senses, she reached out for any shapes that felt like they didn’t belong. All the cabins around were filled with overturned furniture and broken glass. She didn’t feel anything out of the ordinary inside of them. Outside, however… “I think there might be something,” the woman said with a slight frown.

Moving closer to one of the buildings, she stopped a couple meters outside of it near a tree. There was an odd shape to the grass there, like the dirt had been overturned a long time ago in one spot. There was definitely something buried here. Snatching hold of the item with her magic, she pulled it up to the surface without needing to pry it out or dig. Sure enough, it was another journal.

It was dirty and a bit damp from the moisture in the ground. The pages stuck together as she turned them carefully, and some of the ink was a bit runny. She glanced through it quickly, trying not to overlook anything while her frayed nerves kept her system in overdrive. “A lot about just regular camp life,” she said, speaking out loud for Mythal’s benefit since it would be hard to read over her shoulder. It took her a moment, but she did eventually catch sight of the kid’s name. “Here we go, Stanley. Um… seems he was a bit of a shy kid, had a stutter. This particular counselor had some concerns about how impatient some of the other staff members were with the boy, was afraid they were trying to push him too much toward facing some of his fears. Another mention about how afraid the kid was of water.”

That was more or less it. She looked up at Mythal. “Do you really think this information is going to help us with all this?” Serilda wasn’t trying to be cynical, or to say she didn’t trust him, this was just something she was unfamiliar with. Knowledge was power, but she didn’t see how any of this was going to help them get out of this.

Post by Mythal Ragnos 7th January 2019, 10:24 pm

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Well, he could punch ghosts now. That was an interesting development.

It had been more instinct than actual thought process. He’d hoped, maybe by punching at the thing, it would be distracted enough with him to leave Gren alone. He had never expected to actually make a solid connection and yet there it was, his knuckles just barely connecting with it and flinging it into the abyss. Of course it didn’t come without its drawbacks – his entire arm was numb now, after it’s ectoplasm or whatever ghostly stuff that made up its form had gotten on him. It was a familiar feeling; like when he would roll and sleep on his side and wake up to find his arm asleep. But there was no prickling, tingling sensation coming in the minutes after like it did when he had fallen asleep on the limb. He hoped it was temporary… hoped being the operative word.

But they didn’t have time to think about that – they needed to focus on getting out of this nightmare first. It seemed his roughness with Serilda had shaken her from her temporary stupor, the Voidwalker literally gasping slightly as she rose out of her trance. Whatever had taken hold of her hadn’t managed to get her claws in deep enough to cause a further issue. She waited for him to come back to her, Gren leading the way in front of him. He asked about the journals, wanting to know if she could find more. He was onto a hunch that he couldn’t quite explain but it was one he wanted to follow, had to follow. They didn’t have many other options at this point so why not follow the only route they had? The Voidwalker focused, closing her eyes and expanding her senses outward. Luckily it seemed whatever realm they had wandered into hadn’t cut her off and blocked her ability. That would have slammed the door on their possibilities completely.

She searched for a moment before she found something and led them to it, walking up to another lodge but not heading inside. There was a tree near it and it was there, buried beneath a small patch of dirt, that they found yet another journal. Serilda flipped it opened, her eyes skimming it as best she could in the light given off by the moon. Mythal kept his gaze moving all around them, making sure he had a full range of sight. Twice now ghosts had snuck up on them, each one attacking them in different ways. While the first one had actually given them a warning, such eerie words only served to cause psychological damage. The second… well, his arm was enough of a giveaway that that hadn’t been just mental and emotional. The Voidwalker thumbed through until she was able to find something about Stanley, who seemed like a social outcast. The writer had been worried that the other counselors were planning on trying to make him face his fears. They also mentioned water specifically.

“Water,” he muttered, glancing towards the lake. The odd sensations he felt when he put his hand in the liquid, the whispering… even the cry for help. Pieces of the puzzle were coming together. Serilda looked to him, questioning his motives for looking for the journals. “The legend,” he started to explain, glancing down at her briefly. “The man who killed all the counselors. There wasn’t any reason ever given, right? What if it wasn’t just some mindless rage? What if something drove him to it? Something like…” Once again he was interrupted but not by a noise or something catching his eye. It was a sensation; a cold shiver that started in his legs and ran up his veins to the rest of his body. It was the smell in the air, a perverse, warped odor that seemed to be made up of fear and hatred. His eyes turned towards the source, his other senses ringing as loudly as alarm bells. Whispers had begun to echo all around them, unintelligible words that got louder and louder every second. And then… all of a sudden they stopped.

Out of the shadows of the trees came the madman. He looked much like a mechanic, in his blue jumpsuit and heavy brown boots that seemed to shake the ground with every step. His face was completely hidden from view behind a gnarly hockey mask, the once pristine white color marred by dirt and what smelled like dried gore. He was a massive man, inches above Mythal but certainly outweighing him by almost double. And in his hand was the instrument of his carnage; a machete that was caked in old blood. He marched towards them slowly, his thunderous steps mashing the muddy ground with his prints.

“Go, now,” Mythal said, waving at the dogs and Serilda. For once, Gren actually listened – even the hound knew better than to mess with this man. Mythal broke into a sprint with them, running… to wherever they could go honestly. They weaved between cabins until he pointed out one near the edge of the campsite, a smaller one that could serve as a place to barricade themselves. They piled in, the God Slayer slamming the door behind them. He grabbed some of the broken furniture and tossed it in front of the door, using pieces of chair legs to pin it shut as best he could. Just as he pulled away the remnants of a table, the floor gave out underneath it and the few pieces remaining tumbled down into a cellar. Mythal eyed the new opening, which looked completely different in its look than the rest of the cabin itself. “What the hell…?”

Wanted! Kayson Warheez Empty Re: Wanted! Kayson Warheez

"Character counts most when duty calls."

As she read off the stuff she found in the third journal, Mythal kept an eye on their surroundings. But the information found in the book was leading him toward a particular line of thought. The one consistent thing through all the journals thus far had been water, and Stanley’s fear of it. Mythal asked her a bit about the legend again, and Serilda frowned trying to recall the details.

“The stories just say that there was a man named Kayson Warheez that snapped and killed a bunch of counselors. As far as I’m aware, he was just marked off as some kind of… crazed serial killer. If there was a motive, no one that knew about it lived to say so.” She listened as Mythal vocalized his train of thought, still unsure where he was trying to go with everything but trusting him enough to roll with it.

Certainly beat just standing around in a pool of her own panic.

Unfortunately, his comments got cut off once again by yet another interruption. The temperature in the air dropped, and ominous whispers filled the air. Serilda was absolutely done with this shit already. A man appeared out of thin air, and this time she could sense him with her magic. This man, whether ghost or not, was very real. But something about him set Mythal off, and the Slayer urged her yet again to run.

Serilda hated running. She was terrified of everything around her in that moment, and ashamed of that. It was dishonorable, but a part of her couldn’t help but accept that if Mythal was insisting they needed to retreat then it meant that they were truly in danger, perhaps the kind they couldn’t simply fight their way out of. They booked it toward some kind of safety -- any kind -- and her friend pointed them to a smaller building that would be easier to barricade. Serilda wasn’t sure about locking all of them up where they might just get cornered, but in they went anyway.

She could sense the cellar beneath them, though she didn’t really think much about it until after Mythal had shut the door and some of the floor had fallen away. Her magic kicked in to allow her flight so she wouldn’t fall through underground. Xiuhcoatl had managed to jump back in time to stop herself from falling, if barely. What was odd was that the structure of the cellar looked completely different from the rest of the cabin.

All the more curious was what she sensed below. “Give me a second,” she told Mythal, knowing that Kayson was going to start banging on the door any moment -- or worse. It was pitch black underneath, but she didn’t need any light to find what she was looking for. The cellar was all but empty, save for some dusty furniture and a couple items that didn’t really seem to belong: another journal, and a baseball cap.

The glow from Moonlight was enough for her to see by as she picked up the journal and flipped through it. For the most part its contents were similar to what they’d found in the other books, but toward the end it took a dark turn. “Mythal..!” she called out. “I think I found something!” Snatching the hat, she quickly made her way back up to the main floor.

“Listen to this: Stanley W. tried our patience for the last time, today. The stupid kid refused to get into the lake even though he keeps saying he wants to overcome his fear, and we’ve lost a mattress practically every other night from his bed wetting. This entire summer has just been more and more frustrating from every little thing this kid does. He keeps asking for his dad, looking for excuses to get out of activities, isolating himself. In the twenty years I’ve worked at this camp, I’ve never come across a child so exhausting to try to work with. A few of us finally had enough and pulled him over to the lake and threw him in, even though he couldn’t swim. Either he’d finally overcome one of his stupid insecurities, or we’d be rid of him. He drowned. I say good riddance, but now his dad is breathing down our backs and wanting to know where his son is. We told him that Stanley ran off into the woods without supervision and never came back. I don’t think Kayson believes us.”

Serilda looked up at Mythal, the red cap in her hand that looked like it belonged to a child from years ago. “Kayson was Stanley’s father…”

Wanted! Kayson Warheez Empty Re: Wanted! Kayson Warheez

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal was only a second away from telling Serilda to fill the hole when the Voidwalker asked him to wait and give her a moment. She drove into the dark recesses of the basement, apparently having picked up some kind of sensation with her senses.  “Look for an exit!" He called after her, just as Kayson's machete buried itself into the door. The God Slayer leapt back a step, nearly tumbling down into the hole itself. The madman pulled the machete back and swung once more, shattering more wood and spraying splinters all over the pile of debris in front of the door. Mythal summoned magic into his right arm, the rest of his body set in a defensive stance. They were cornered at this point, which meant that they would have to fight. He just wasnt sure how well that was going to go. Something about Kayson felt off; his smell, his presence, everything really. And he wasn't sure that they actually stood a chance against him.

Serilda returned, with a hat and journal in tow. She read aloud from the book, an excerpt that was... more than disturbing. Some of the counselors had gotten so fed up with Stanley and his constantly annoying tendencies that they had thrown him in the lake, despite his not being able to swim. They had tried to cover it up when the father started asking questions, the father named...

“Bastards," he hissed. So he had been right -- Kayson had started killing for a reason and an earnest one at that. Losing a child because the people meant to look after him betrayed his trust... no wonder he had snapped. Mythal reached over and took the hat from her, cradling it gently in his hands. He looked up at her, a glimmer of something in his eyes; understanding perhaps. “I would stand back. This is gonna be really stupid," he explained, taking a solid step back from her.

All at once, he kicked all the debris out of the way of the door. He reached out and yanked the door open, just before Kayson was about to swing at it.  He, instead, adjusted his aim for Mythal... until he stopped. His eyes had caught sight of the hat in the God Slayer's hands, freezing him in his spot. Mythal took a soft breath and took a step forward, bringing the hat up between them. For what seemed like ages, the world was still. Then Kayson's arm dropped and a moment after, the machete clattered to the ground. With the same hand that had wielded the deadly weapon, he reached out slowly and took the hat into his grasp. He brought it close to his chest, cradling it like he would a child. His gaze lifted monetarily to look at the two of them. "Thank you," he said softly, his voice sincere. And with that, he turned and began to march away.

Mythal and assumingly Serilda walked to the doorframe to watch the killer walk towards the lake. There, standing at the edge of the water, was a ghostly child no more than eight or nine. He was smiling softly, if a bit sadly, at the man approaching him. “You know..." he said softly. “I get it. It may not be sensible to kill all those people but... losing a child, being lied to about it... I really can't blame 'em," he explained as he watched Kayson take his son's hand and walk into the lake with him. He never stopped watching, even as the man's head disappeared below the surface. And then there was a bright flash of light that would blind them both and once their vision's cleared, they'd find themselves once more in the middle of the morning. They would hear the Rune Knights continuing their investigation, their words carrying in the air. But the world felt different -- like the pause button had finally been lifted and everything had resumed.

Mythal looked down and found Kayson's mask, magically in his hand. It seemed the man was finally at rest, with his son right beside him.
