    Spoiler:

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal didn’t know it yet, but today was going to be the day that he nearly had a heart attack. It was also the one where he, very nearly, gave into the darkness within him. There were no signs or warnings of what was to come; in fact, it seemed to be a far more chipper day than others had been. It was a cloud day, which meant that the God Slayer didn’t need to deal with the sun bearing down on him with its brightness and heat. The breakfast he had decided to experiment with had not only been successful but damn near mind-blowing. He’d opted to save some jewel and drive his lacrimacycle to the guild hall rather than jump on the train. The ride had been quite the sight, giving him a full perspective of the land that he didn’t normally take in. All in all, it was a turning out to be a good day. And with any luck, he would be able to find a job or two at the guild hall to bring in some jewel.

He pulled up onto the sidewalk right outside the hall, kicking the stand out so he could lean the vehicle while he went inside. A few passersby turned to look at the sleek motorcycle, as its design wasn’t widely known yet. The Motor City guild was certainly preparing to launch this new line of transportation but not yet. He pulled the helmet off his head and hung it on the handlebar. He was putting the temporary lock on the bike when he saw it, directly across the street from him. They were slightly hidden behind a set of stacked boxes in an alleyway but the color of their robes was distinct. Blood red. Mythal’s eyes latched onto the out-of-place color immediately and the sight of the half-hidden robed person that seemed to be staring out at him. Their face was hidden underneath the shadow of their hood but one could always tell when eyes were upon them.

The God Slayer rose up to a completely standing position slowly, keep his gaze focused on the man or woman – he couldn’t tell. The world seemed to slow down as he glared at the figure, time falling into a crawl as each person stared at the other. Already Mythal was gently funneling magic out of his core, pulling it towards his right arm slowly so his magical signature didn’t give off too high of a pressure. What was he supposed to do, in such a crowded place like this? People were moving every which way through the streets of Magnolia, going about their days in oblivious stupor to the possible violence that was about to erupt. If he was attacked here, what could he do? He’d dealt with the Tower of Rodger in the market district but that had been after most of the crowd had run away. There had been rumbling – the ground had shaken and cracked as a warning to them all. If this robed person attacked right now, lives would be at stake. Was it better for him to attack first instead? Leap across the street and pin this person to the ground, demanding answers?

And what if this was a member of the Sons of Faera? What was his next step after that? The more violent thoughts that came to mind surged ice water through his veins. But just as he was weighing his options, a small child came running around the corner, wearing a similar red robe. He still couldn’t tell the gender of the new arrival but they had to be six or seven, judging by the height. “Mommy! Daddy found the food!” he said proudly, holding up a retrieved apple like it was gold. The figure that had been staring at him turned easily, a small laugh escaping the apparent mother’s mouth.

“How wonderful!” She replied, bending down to hug the little tyke. Just past her crouched head he could see another man in a similar red robe, holding bags that were filled to the brim with food.

Mythal’s tension slowly began to dissipate, his hands uncurling from their tightly wound fists. As he did so, he could feel each limb shaking slightly, the rush of adrenaline still fueling through his veins. He sighed gently and scratched the back of his head with one hand. “Getting’ too much in your head,” he chastised himself, giving his head a small shake to try and rid himself of the emotions that had come crawling back up. As he turned back towards the guild hall and entered through its doors, he missed the robed woman waving to her husband – and apparently a small group of similarly dressed folks – and pointing at his back as he entered.

His first stop was one he didn’t expect – the bar. He walked around the end of it and moved right inside. His hands moved like they had practiced for years; a glass found its way into one hand and the heaviest liquor on the shelves was popped open and poured into it. He didn’t even bother to sip the drink to for the taste; it was knocked back in one swift motion. He swallowed it heartily and sighed, feeling his nerves dull a little from the smooth and heavy booze that now made its way to his stomach. He stood there for a moment longer, resting his forehead against the glass, trying to decide if he wanted another drink just to fully steady himself. But he silently turned it down; he still was planning on doing a job today and he was also driving. Last thing he wanted to do was wind up wrapped around a tree or in a ditch.

He set the glass down in the sink and finally removed himself from his safe haven, walking around the bar and heading towards the entryway again. It was a hop, skip and a jump up to the job board and then what had just happened would be the last thing on his mind. He was almost fully back to himself by the time he was turning up towards the board. He hadn’t even heard the doors open or the small gasps that came from the crowd of people that had just entered.

“Oh my Lord! Nika, you were right! It is him!”

That same cold feeling rifled through his bloodstream and he froze on the spot, his eyes widening as he stared blankly at the ground. Everything in him begged for this to be a nightmare, for him to suddenly wake up and find himself in his bed. But as he slowly turned, he found himself staring a several red-robed heads that were all staring right back at him. His eyes snapped between each face, as their cowls had been pulled back enough to reveal their smiling, awed features.

“It is the Savior!” An elderly-sounding man said from the left, proclaiming the statement loud and proud. And then, one by one, they all fell to their hands and knees and bowed to him, like he was the walking epitome of some divine creature. And all Mythal could do was stare in absolute horror.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal had been reduced to a statue, standing before the crowd of robed men, women and children all bowing to him repeatedly. His mind was going every which way; did he run? Did he try to attack them before they got even more fanatical than this? The Sons had found him and were now worshipping him like he had the Fallen God inside of him at the moment. They had to be mad and they had come here, certainly to beg him to enact Faera’s grand design. “I…” He started, managing to find something of a voice.

“Oh my, my apologies, my Lord,” the elder man said, finally bringing himself to his feet, though he did bow his head a bit still. “We did not mean to alarm you. It is just… we’ve been searching for a long time for our Savior and we had heard tell that perhaps he was in this guild, this Fairy Tail,” he remarked, taking a look around. But as his eyes came back to meet Mythal’s wide, horrified ones, there was nothing but glee. “And Nika knew the minute she laid eyes on you that you were our messiah. Praise be unto the Embodiment of Light!”

“Praise be!” The crowd answered in turn, returning to their bowing.

Mythal had been stuck in a state of shock that had rendered him damn near speechless. His heart was pounding so hard, he had nearly missed the old man’s words. But he had caught that last part – the Embodiment of Light. Some semblance of clarity returned to his mind, screaming above all the other frantic voices that rose in chorus. These weren’t the Sons of Faera. These were just religious zealots; fanatics that were looking for some kind of idol to embody all of their beliefs and hopes.

    Gods, had they picked wrong.

“Sorry, you got the wrong guy,” Mythal spat quickly. He didn’t give them time to question him, pushing past the man and through the congregation to the door. He practically tore it off its hinges as he made a beeline out the door, not even stopping to get back on his bike. He turned down the street and began to walk. He wasn’t sure where he was going but he was just… going.

But he could hear them behind him; their shuffling feet scratching the cement like nails on a chalkboard. He turned his head just enough to look over his shoulder and found them there, staring at him with hopeful looks and stares. He hissed between his clenched teeth and turned suddenly down a small path between two buildings, his gait ramping up as he went. Yet they followed, their own sandaled feet scuffling along to match his rhythm. He broke the line of the alley and emerged in a small open area between four buildings, segregated from the rest of the town. He had every intention of continuing on but the sound of their feet and their whispering and the noises in his head just…

“What the hell do you want?!” He snapped suddenly, whirling around to face the fanatics. They immediately fell to their knees before him, bowing their heads so not to meet his gaze. That only made him angrier. “Get on your damn feet. I’m not some friggin’ messiah or Embodiment of Light.”

“But you are, my Lord,” the old man insisted, raising his hands in the direction of the God Slayer. “We can sense your divine qualities. We know it is you who will us of our suffering and make this world a happier place. You will be the savior of mankind’s true believers!”

“Savior?!” Mythal asked, laughing madly. He slapped his hand against his forehead as he continued to laugh, the manic sound echoing out from the open area and up into the sky. “You idiots have got it all wrong.”

“No, Lord. You are simply blind to your true potential – your true role! You must embrace it; only you can save us from the reckoning. Deliver us to salvation! Bring us to the light!” The old man threw himself before his feet, groveling on the ground before the God Slayer. The others crowded around him, their hands reaching out to almost touch his shoes in hopes of touching some of his glory.

Mythal’s fear had quickly boiled off and was replaced with rage. These idiots were this blind to reality that they had to seek some religious role model to help them have any hope in the world? No, they were not the Sons of Faera but they were merely a bad day away from being them. Fanatics that searched for hope in beings that had no right or reason to mingle in human affairs. It was people like this that opened the doors to the horrors that had brought him into existence, that had allowed his adoptive father to perish in flames. His hand slid behind his back, reaching for the handle of Curse. He would be doing the world a favor if he struck them down here – their blind idiocy wasn’t worth the air they wrongfully inhaled. His fingers touched the firm haft, the solid answer for this problem in front of him. The same answer he would bring down upon the Sons of Faera if he ever encountered them again.

Yet he did not pull the sword out. There was no flash of steel nor gore splashing over the ground. Mythal’s hand rested on the grip for only a moment longer before it pulled away, the limb returning to his side. He inhaled sharply, his consciousness returning through the haze of hatred and fury. How was he better than the Sons if he struck these people down? Yes, they were fanatical and yes, it was possible that the wrong influences could push them down a dark path. Their views were skewed and any religion that circled around him was doomed to end in disappointment. But he was not a God and he had not right to smite them for simply having hope in some unexplainable deity.

“Listen,” he said softly. Their heads lifted to look to him, each one ready to absorb his wisdom and knowledge. “I’m not your Embodiment of Light. Any deific presence you sense from me is my magic. I’m a God Slayer,” he explained slowly. “In a way, you’re not… wrong. I have a power that is connected to a god. But she isn’t light and she ain’t gonna save you.”

“B-But…” The older man said, stumbling over his words.

Mythal held up a hand to stop him. “But that don’t mean you have to… stop believin’ either. But don’t put your faith in anyone sittin’ in some metaphorical chair in the sky. Believe in each other. You clearly have a strong enough faith to unite the lot of you. Use it to help others that maybe are sufferin’ more than you. If… us humans work together, we won’t need no gods to help us. We’ll save ourselves.” He scratched uncomfortably at the back of his head as he finished his explanation. “I’m gonna go… drink until I can’t see straight. This whole thing’s messed me up pretty bad. Do me a favor and just think about what I said, a’ight? And don’t come bargin’ into the guild again, proclaimin’ me as a savior.” He waited until a saw a few of the heads nod in agreement, if not bewilderment, before he turned and continued to walk away.

“Thank you…” The older man called out, pausing before he called the God Slayer any kind of title or honorary degree. Mythal continued forward but he raised his left hand in a half wave, acknowledging it.

The group turned towards one another, murmuring softly. Far above them, standing on the rooftop, a man stood on the edge looking down. He was a shorter man, perhaps five foot five but heavily muscled. His black hair was pointed behind his head, ending on his forehead in a widow’s peak. A beard ran down over his sideburns and over the curvature of his jawline, speckled with black and white hair. His mustache and goatee were completely white. He smirked as his dark eyes turned to look at Mythal walking away, off to find some bar or corner to drink in.
