That's Not the Great Pumpkin, Arcadia Fairchilde Empty That's Not the Great Pumpkin, Arcadia Fairchilde

Post by SeaGlass 18th November 2019, 5:50 am

The morning sun shone brightly outside Arcadia's window. Halloween was drawing near, here she was stuck in her room at Fairy Hills. She had been looking forward to the festivities for awhile now. Her photo shoot for Sorcerer Magazine had gotten her into the spirit of things early. The barefoot slayer could hardly wait to show off her costume at a real party or even just out trick or treating after the Great Pumpkin's visit.

Arcadia would not get to do any of that though, having come down with a cold. It was quite embarrassing for Arcadia Fairchilde, the Frost Maiden of Dragnof, Executive Manager of Fairy Tail, Fimbulvetr - The Great Winter Dragon, of all wizards, to brought low by a cold. Being an ice dragon slayer did not make her impervious to falling sick. It was just so often catching colds were so often associated with being  cold and wet. Both things that did not usually bother Arcadia much. Truth was, colds could be caught other ways, and lay low even ice dragon slayers.

Now sick as she was, she did not want to risk giving her cold to still others. Still she hated he idea of not even getting a chance to see the Great Pumpkin. Arcadia was sure this year would be the year she would finally see it. All that work she put into helping set up and grow most sincere pumpkin patch in all of Magnolia on Fairy Hill's roof would be for nothing. Not that she would admit to still believing in stuff like the Great Pumpkin to anyone. Not to anyone in Fairy Tail nor even her younger non-wizard friends in the Magnolia Seis.

The way she saw it was, maybe it was ridiculous, but with all the magical things she had seen and experienced, it was not so ridiculous as to be impossible. So far in her life, something had always come up that she could explain not seeing this mythical figure. Like when she was younger, she thought she probably just fell asleep too early. Or even just last year that crazy black mist that made everything turn opposite probably made Great Pumpkin avoid Fiore altogether.

This year, Arcadia vowed would be different. She was older now, so falling asleep was not a problem. The evil behind the black mists had been dealt with as far as she knew, so that should not be a repeat problem. She only needed a sincere pumpkin patch to wait for the Great Pumpkin in, and she made sure there would be one close by.  This she did by talking (hounding) the Fairy Hills den mother into allowing a rooftop garden and pumpkin patch. Arcadia had spent much of her free time in its creation and tending to all the plants once they started to grow.

Her iLac vibrated and chirped an alert to her from her bedside nightstand. One of her friends from the Magnolia Seis had texted her a photo of a flier they had seen around town. Opening the photo, Arcadia's faerie green eyes fixed intently on her iLac screen. The flier was calling on all mages to lend their aid in preparations for a big Halloween Party. Well maybe she was too sick to go would not neglect her duty as a Fairy Tail ace and mage. Besides it was an especially simple job that she should be able to do, even sick as she was.  With her pumpkin patch up on the roof, she would not even have travel. She should be able to pick a few pumpkins for to the cause, and be back in bed by noon. It would be the highlight of her otherwise rather boring day of being sick at home.

Arcadia willed herself out of bed. Her cold did not make it easy, as there was not one part of her that really wanted to move. The ice dragon slayer was not often cold, but her recent chills had taught her concept anew. Extra blankets gave her bed a toasty warmth she was loathe to leave behind. Her nose was the neverending kind of runny, where no matter much she blew to clear it, it would ill right back up. Not to mention her head and all her limbs all felt like they were made of lead. She managed to get herself dressed, and wore not one, but two coats to stay warm. She almost even dared to wear some shoes for once... almost.

Once dressed, she pocketed her scissors and iLac, the basics she would need for this job. Arcadia made sure to wear all her other usual accessories (a crystal moon rose in her hair, a rainbow ring, and a sparkly celestial charm anklet) too, if only because she would feel naked doing a wizardly job without them.

With a sneeze, the ill slayer focused on the scissors in her pocket, and opened a portal from her room to the roof. The portal closing behind her, Arcadia squinted greatly in the comparatively bright morning light. Her faerie green eyes might have been adjusted to creature of the night level sensitivity after being inside so long, but the warm sun still felt good.  She stood there a moment or two soaking up the solar heat.

Overlooking the rooftop garden and pumpkin patch, Arcadia really did feel it was the most sincere in all of Magnolia.  There were a few vegetables the Fairy Hills staff could put to use for the meals it often provided for its residents and for its spa. These were grown in containers around the perimeter of the roof. The pumpkin patch itself consisted of raised soil beds contained in square wooden frames, nine frames in all laid out in a three by three square grid across the whole roof. It had been quite the effort transporting all that dirt up here, even with magic portals. There folksy bits of home made art that he staff and Fairy Hills residents had made to give the garden and pumpkin patch a more homey feel, including a rather cutesy and whimsical scarecrow.

The fresh air and sun's warmth helping her feel a little better, Arcadia sniffed her nose a little clearer and picked a couple of the baskets the staff often used for collecting vegetables from the perimeter containers. Lining the baskets up along one side of the nearest corner frame,  Arcadia got to work picking pumpkins. It was overall slower than a fully healthy ice dragon slayer could do, but Arcadia was enjoying herself just the same. It felt good to know she would be contributing to the big party in some way, even if she would not be going herself. She even sang parts of a song that had been running through her head off and on these last few weeks to help herself work.

o/` Why can't I tell you all of these feelings
It's so much easier when I'm dreaming
I think my brain's about to short circuit
I really wish I could find the words
And now I'm crying under the moonlight
I wanna call you up, but it's midnight
What should I do with all of these feelings
    Like a Kaleidoscopic heart
The light that shines down from the moon
    Will guide the way
And once again, it leads me to you
The constellations sparkle in my dreams
And so I wonder if it's a blessing
As if by fate we're born on the same planet
    Just like a miracle romance
So let us have another great weekend
And I will pray it has a happy end  o/`

The air growing unnaturally chill was easily dismissed by the sick slayer, as she zipped up her coats a bit more to try and keep in what warmth she had.  It took a sudden darkening of the sun to pull her out of her song and work routine.  She dropped the pumpkin she had picked in basket, dusting the tiny pricks and spines its stem had left in her fingers. Arcadia turned her faerie green gaze skyward. From no discernible direction, it seemed her nice sunny warm  morning was growing swiftly gloomy and overcast. The dark clouds overhead just growing out of themselves. The clouds darkened further, but it wasn't the clouds. It was a massive murder of crows flying down out of the menacing clouds.

She knew immediately there was something not right about any of this. She wondered briefly if this was repeat of last year, yet she thought that perpetrator had been dealt with. Also last year did not involve crows like this. The crows grew quite loud the closer they came. There was some relief when the massive murder split up to spread out over the various pumpkin patches spread out I around Magnolia and the farmlands outside it. At least all of them weren't coming straight for Fairy Hills' pumpkins. Being sick as she was, Arcadia pondered retreating back inside, but she couldn't let all their hard work be picked apart by a few avian pests. The barefoot slayer would be staying put to defend her very sincere little rooftop pumpkin patch.

At first, Arcadia watched and waited to see if the whimsical little scarecrow would be up to the task. As she feared though, the crows' numbers made one little scarecrow irrelevant. While the massive murder of crows he first arrive over Magnolia had split apart, those that flew down to Fairy Hills' rooftop were still quite plentiful. Try as she might to run around and scare them off by waving her arms, these particular crows were just too numerous and aggressive to simply be chased off. They began to dive bomb her, trying to peck at her eyes and exposed skin.  Reflexively she hid her face into her arms and jackets. She was going to have to get serious about this. This many crows aws more than just a nuisance. One or two crows manged to draw blood on the ill slayer before she  willed herself into Dragon Force.

    Arcadia in Dragon Force:

Her pale blonde hair bleached completely white and her faerie green eyes turned glowing red as she was suddenly surrounded by a quite frosty aura of chilled air. Not wanting to leave any of the pumpkin vines or other vegetables frost bitten from her magic, Arcadia tapped into the Star of Odin charm around ankle to shift the output of her magic from ice to crystal. Her magic would not be as devastating, but hopefully most of the garden's greenery would be spared.

Conjuring a skin of crystal armor around herself  lessened any further lows the swarming crows could land, and made it easier to deflect them away. They were easy enough for Arcadia to crush or pummel one by one. Trouble was, there would not be a pumpkin patch or garden left on Fairy Hill's rooftop if she did that way. It would just take too long. So she darted to the center of the roof, leaping  and spun herself into a  mid-air pirouette. Crystal dragon-like wings sprouted from her back to slow her descent back to the roof

Arcadia used her mid-air pirouette to breathe a cloud of mist and tiny razor sharp crystals in a full three hundred and sixty degrees. It left the whole rooftop, plants and all coated in elemental crystal, but that would be temporary and maybe protect them for the time being. It also dropped every single crow haranguing Arcadia dead onto the rooftop or ground below. Her Ice Dragon Roar had grown really quite devastating, but then again these were only crows and the rooftop made for a densely packed area for them to be attacking in.

Upon touching down, her crystal dragon wings vanished as she folded them in. She also sighed, knowing she should have expected it to not be that easy, because the remains of the crows were already being pulled together. They broke through the crystal veneer covering them to fuse together into one large undead monstrosity. She could feel the life-stealing chill start to roll off it as soon as the last crow was fuzed into its form. It sounded as if the noisome caws the crows had filled her ears within life had turned to terrible screams in death. She instinctively conjured a cloud tiny crystals around her to act as mirrors and prisms that she used to displace an image of herself from her real location.

When the monstrosity swiped for her displaced image, Arcadia used the opening to flip over top of it. She used its forward momentum to help her landing on its shoulders to drive it face first into the rooftop. Before it could rise again, she stomped what passed for its head three maybe four times. The pile of crows making up its head left flattened or crushed. The rest of the chilling monster lost its cohesion, becoming a vaguely humanoid pile of crows.

No sooner had she finished off that stomach turning undead thing, than the previously whimsical but useless scarecrow began to move on its own. It's old cutesy button smile  and painted on eyes twisted into a disturbing, murderous lunatic grin.  Though she used the cloud of tiny crystals to summon four five illusionary copies of herself around the scarecrow, it remained fixed on the real her.  She slowly backed away as it advanced on her. The illusions of herself slowly advanced on the scarecrow.

Eventually, Arcadia ran out of rooftop to back up on.  She glanced back at the edge behind her, and back to the scarecrow. To the horror of her glowing red eyes, it was pulling a terrible scythe from its chest. And it cackled madly  as it raise the scythe up to strike. Commitment to swing its blade was the kind of opening she was waiting for though, and she switched places with one of her illusionary selves. The real her ended up right behind the scarecrow, and the illusion transferred into her place blinked out of existence as it took the swipe of the scarecrow's scythe.

She used the element of surprise to sweep its legs out from under via a kick. The barefoot slayer knelt down beside her now prone enemy, grabbing its head smashing it repeatedly into the rooftop. She used all her dragon slayer strength to practically throw it down without really letting go each time. The scarecrow for its part, snuck a jab at the crystal-encrusted slayer's side. If not for that crystal armor, that strike would have really hurt. It would not get a chance for a second swing, Arcadia bearing through the  pain to crush head one last time against the rooftop.

Arcadia stood up slowly, holding her side, her glowing red gaze taking survey of Fairy hill's once very sincere pumpkin patch. Most of the vegetation and pumpkins was still intact, but the surrounding carnage made it more creepy than sincere. Though it was still overcast and gloomy, it seemed the worst was over, nothing more seemed to be popping out or coming to life.

The barefoot slayer used the moment's peace to knit the wound in her side with a ptch of slow expanding crystal. She winced at the lingering pain, missing the numbing cold her healing spell usually held. Substituting crystal for her magic's usual output of ice had its advantages, but held as many downsides in trade.

It was about then the gloom in the sky above began to roll in with a heavy fog that quickly filled in around Fairy Hills. She heard cold laughter all around the fog, until it concentrated ahead of her where golden light from lantern would appear. The long, spindly and floating figure of the Pumpkin Patch King would emerge from the shadows within the mist, holding up the lantern. Arcadia would snarl at the pumpkin headed figure, ”This is your fault, isn't it?? Because of you, I don't think I'll get to see the Great Pumpkin this year either! What if I'm too old for the Great Pumpkin to come visit me next year? You might've ruined my last chance of ever meeting him! And almost all these pumpkins! To ruin childhood dreams is unforgivable!”

The Pumpkin Patch King only chuckled at Arcadia and unleashed a bolt of dark energy that knocked the slayer back. Normally she would try to avoid a blast like that, but she had her sights on venting her frustrations and the Pumpkin Patch King alike.  She reverted back to normal, her hair regaining its light golden sheen and tint. The reddish glow fading back to a sparkling faerie green. Giving up Dragon Force was just so she could go full dragon. Knowing the rooftop likely could not support her weight as a Great Ice Wyrm, she charged toward the King and leaped.  Her emerging wings of living ice would beat furiously to help lift her high enough, so that by the time she was a full 30m long dragon shaped from living ice that there was no danger of busting Fairy Hill's roof  under her weight.

    Arcadia as Great Ice Wyrm:

She snatched Pump King up in her jaws, climbing higher still under the power of her wings. She violently shook the King like a rag doll in her jaws, not giving it time to zap her again. So infuriated for possibly missing her last chance at once of her longest running childhood dreams, she lost count how many times she shook  her head back and forth. She did not stop until the King stopped too.

Dropping it from her jaws, Arcadia reverted back to human form before landing back on the rooftop. Out of breath, she finally had the relief of the sun coming out again after the King's defeat. It seemed she was at least free to try returning her rooftop pumpkin patch to sincere state and finish collecting pumpkins for the upcoming big party. Arcadia was going to need double the bed rest to get over her cold after all this.
