..to control the storm I must..

    Words: 819

    a tempest's tale: unexalted fear
    MASTERY
"Control thy emotions to control thy strength!"
Light broke through canopies of green leaves connected to long spiraling trunks that curled and contorted towards the sky. Crisp grass crunched under an individual set of mobile feet. Connected to those feet, a figure moving at a speed indiscernible to the eye. His body weaved and dived through the aforementioned forest. Two colourless eyes were narrowed, dead-set on the task ahead. A hooded white top obscured the majority of his facial features aside from two white bangs that curled distinctly over his eyes. Black pants covered his lower half accompanied by similarly colored sandals. Amagiri gritted his teeth whilst his muscles ached and complained. He'd been moving for sometime now and the toll of fatigue was starting to become an overbearing weight on his fragile frame. The white-haired mage shook his head vigorously, dismissing the jovial thought of physical exhaustion.

    •••

Amagiri's mind wandered to the past; the events that had set this hasty withdrawal to the forest in motion. It was his off-day, a time to bask in tranquil environments away from the conflictual experiences he tried to overcome on a daily basis. He found himself in Magnolia, a location where celebrations never ceased. Unlike his visit to Talonia, Magnolia exuded a much more pleasant aura. Your everyday folk waltzed by with visages of happiness marking their faces. Every city had characters that hid behind these pleasant veils though.

Three rough-looking characters stood, huddled together. In their hands, sacks of produce. They didn't look like the agricultural type and Amagiri did his best to dismiss the skepticism that began to influence his actions. He couldn't help but listen to their rasping tones, hushed voices.

"Stupid village folk. Can't trust them to do anything. Now we're out here selling their produce rather than just reaping the profit. I'll make sure they pay for this disobedience." Amagiri's eyes narrowed whilst the air around them began to grow cold. A bandit poked his head up, noting the change in environment but soon payed it no heed and continued to pontificate with his buddies. "Don't worry, I've got one of the boys on it already. We'll see how they react when we start punishing their kids. Heheh."

Amagiri stepped forwards, his fists clenched. Dark clouds began to appear overhead, dismissing the warm sunshine that these Magnolians so often craved. Thunder rumbled and the bandits glanced around, their eyes widening to this freak shift in environmental conditions. A manipulative tone flooded Amagiri's consciousness while his temperament bubbled.

"Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned, little one. Strike now or those villagers will never be saved." Amagiri growled before stepping forwards. Lightning struck the ground accompanying his movement to send a shower of debris dispersing outwards from this singularity. A dusty fog settled over a small vicinity giving the young mage an opportune moment with which to strike. His hand extended, an open palm enclosing around one of the bandit's vulnerable throats. A choking sound could be heard whilst his comrades cried out.

"You're going to tell me everything you know about this village. I could take you down as easily as a child blows out their birthday candles." Amagiri's voice trembled with anger whilst he struggled to maintain control over his bodily actions. It didn't take long before the bandit soon caved and information flooded like water cascading from a fountain.

    •••

Fastforwarding to current events, Amagiri paused on a nearby branch. A clearing stood out from the dense forest like a diamond in the rough. The village the bandit had described was relatively antiquated with it's wooden fencing that encased the buildings within a spherical fortification. The buildings themselves were constructed with similar materials, all one-storey tall and looking like they'd house about four to five people each.

"How could they.." Amagiri growled to himself, a fist clenching whilst he perched on a branch overlooking the village below. What happened next really shocked him to the core.

A man emerged from one of the buildings that was previously described. He exuded an impressive aura, strong and resolute. Muscles bulged from a relatively tight shirt and a knife hung from his cargo shorts. In his hand, a tuft of hair belonged to a young girl that couldn't find her feet as she was dragged helplessly along the grass towards the center of the village. The ruthless bandit gesticulated around him where, Amagiri assumed, fearful villagers watched on--unable to act.

"Today.. you'll learn the consequences of your disobedience! You dumb peasants will learn to do as you're told otherwise this is going to happen again.. and again.. and again.. A glint of metal sparkled whilst the bandit brought a hand to the knife at his belt. Amagiri's muscles tensed preparing to leap off the branch and spiral into action. He had to act now.

Heat cannot be separated from fire, or beauty from The finite.

A delicate hand stroked at the soft skin of her exposed belly, her top having ridden up to just beneath her breasts at some point in the night. Though unconscious her fingers pressed against the lacrima that lay dormant beneath her skin. Sheets were tangled between her legs, and the sunlight that filtered through her open window warmed her already heated skin further. Beneath the wooden flooring in the tavern below, was the bustle of the early morning crowd. The Soul Bar was filled with many colorful characters, at many times of the day and the chatter had become a welcomed lullaby. It was the sound of heavy footsteps coming up the stairs that had the incessantly stroking hand go still.

    Thump! Thump!

An even heavier hand had hit her door, a voice bellowing from behind it, demanding as to why she was still in bed. There was work to be done, and customers to be served after all."I'm up~!"She yawned, sitting up with a stretch of her arm. Bones creaked and popped not entirely unpleasantly, and slowly amethyst eyes opened squinting at the brightness of the sun. Outside she could hear the bustle of the townspeople, of mages and civilians alike. There was the scents of bakers, and blacksmiths, of adventurers and travelers from distant lands. Everyday it was different scents, and different people but there was some familiar faces amongst the crowd. Some even peering up at the sleepy blonde in the window, offering her a cheerful wave or salute while bidding her good morning. She returned them all with a wave and smile of her own, chin resting on the windowsill before another series of urgent knocks had her getting up from her bed in a hurry.

    Venir RuLushe! I swear-

    "I'm up, I'm up geeze!

    The sound of her feet hitting the floor is what had made the man outside her door retreat. If Venir was standing than Venir was certainly awake. Hurriedly she went about her morning routine. Running a brush through her mane of golden tresses was perhaps the most time consuming portion of making herself somewhat presentable for work. Pajamas were traded in for her usual attire, and boots were hastily put on while she made her way down the stairs. The last few steps were forgone, and instead Venir chose to jump landing onto the floorboards with a loud thump;

    "G'Moooooorning!

The barkeeps returned her greeting, and the owner shook his head with a smile. Most of the patrons in the bar hardly bat an eye, the regulars knew this as the usual routine. The newcomers to the bar merely stared, unsure of what to make of the energetic and bubbly blonde. Most brushed it off with a shrug or an appreciative stare, for her figure was not hard on the eyes. Pretty as she may be, familiar faces knew better than to touch and the newcomers either learned the hard way or... If they were half way decent mage they'd be able to sense that the upbeat waitress was more than just a pretty face. Regardless of what magic prowess she had, Venir seemed content as the waitress and sometimes barkeep of the Soul Bar. There was little cause of her to use her magic, or her strength lest it was to break up a fight or prove a point, maybe do the occasional party trick, and she was never against an arm wrestling match or two. Yes, spending her days tending the bar and being around other mages was simply enough, there was no need for her to quest anymore-

"Help! Please, won't anyone take this job?

"Ya got no money kid, it ain't a job it's goodwill, and you came to the wrong place for it.

It was already late in the day when the kid had come stumbling in, looking far from well. The dark ring around one eye was all the story Venir needed to hear, but nonetheless she watched as he asked every mage he could. Yet try as hard as he might, most guildless mages did not work out of the kindness of their heart, and the childs pockets were far from filled. It wasn't until the child collapsed at the bar counter in defeat that Venir approached food in hand, with an even softer smile.

"Tell me what's wrong. don't worry I just want to listen."

    ~*~

"Ven, you're gonna be careful right? Be sure to come back, it'd be a shame to lose a well-trained waitress that can handle 'erself.

"Of course. I always am." She grinned, offering him a wave as she left the bar with her bag slung over her shoulder. It had been a long time since he had seen her leaveto go on a proper job. Once upon a time it had been a common occurrence. Watching her leave, sunlight streaming in and lighting her up to make her look like the goddesses that she could slay. Ven can handle herself. She's a goddess slayer. Ain't much that can compete wit' her. It's just been a while s'all. Out of practice or no it was just some common bandits, Ven shouldn't have any problems with them. Yet a knot of worry still pooled in his belly. It wasn't her safety that concerned him, it was the safety of her foes that was most worrisome. He only prayed they didn't cause her too much trouble, and that she'd be able to return back to the bar without anymore legal problems.

    ~*~

The trek to the village had been a quick one, there was after all a timeline she had to meet. With villagers at stake there wasn't any time for Venir to waste. Luckily, the village wasn't as far as she had anticipated. Considering the situation Venir didn't dare enter immediately. Instead she hung outside the walls, in the shade beneath the trees. "Villagers." She closed her eyes, focusing, straining her ears to listen. How many were inside the walls. How many villagers? Their general positions? How many bandits? Positions? As she listened, trying to keep count and consideration of where they were, a voice rang loud and clear. There was the sound of somebody, a small somebody being dragged, and the clear and then there was the clear and concise threat. By the time she caught the scent of steel in the air, Venir had already sprung into action. A blast of fire was all it took to launch herself over the village walls, already aiming herself towards the bandit and child in question.

    "Let her go you asshole!"

..to control the storm I must..

    Words: 780

    a tempest's tale: unexalted fear
    MASTERY
"Control thy emotions to control thy strength!"
    "H-hey..!"

There was only time for a single breath to pass between Amagiri's open lips as a flash of golden blonde passed him by--hurtling itself into the danger ahead. The white-haired mage couldn't determine whether it was male or female; even human for that matter. He had every suspicion to believe that not to be the case considering she'd cleared the massive wooden fortifications in a single leap. It wasn't until she ground to a halt, standing still in the middle of the clearing that Amagiri finally deciphered who and what he was looking at.

There she stood, a graceful yet powerful looking individual. Blonde curls dangled down her back with a neat fringe that hung short over her forehead. Two distinct purple eyes framed a pretty cute face. Color flushed his cheeks and he shook his head vigorously. Now certainly wasn't the time to be admiring her figure; he had to move even though the golden-blonde woman looked like she had a pretty good handle on things already. Dismissing the thought, Amagiri prepared to intervene himself when the bandit soon began to speak again.

"Who the hell are you, bitch?!" the bandit exclaimed as he hastily chucked the clump of hair that was once enclosed in his meaty fist aside. The girl that had fallen victim to his grasp screamed and ran for one of the nearby doors. It swung open swiftly on her arrival and what looked to be a mother ushered her inside, worry and fear plaguing her once kind features. The look on her face was harrowing.

"My group and I don't take too kindly to heroes.. See what happened to the last one?" the bandit belted out a laugh in his deep and husky tone. A singular fat finger outstretched from his palm and pointed upwards to a pike that hung only a few meters outside of the gargantuan wooden beams that served as walls. There a head remained clamped to it's steeple. Hair thankfully covered most of the "hero's" features but to see such brutality openly displayed shook Amagiri to his core.

"Now... bitch.." he emphasized the title he'd so graciously decided to give her. "...because I'm feeling generous today, I'll make sure your death is swift." his eyes squinted and pupils disappeared so just the whites of his sclera remained on display. In a berserk frenzy, he trudged forwards, swinging the meat-cleaver like a mad-man in a bizarre attempt to decapitate the golden-blonde. Amagiri was done waiting around.

Dark clouds gathered and thunder began to rumble. This bizarre shift in the atmosphere caused everyone to stop dead in their tracks. The cries and whispers from the small huts that surrounded the village square were silenced as they too glanced upwards towards the darkening skies. The thuggish bandit's hand froze a centimetre away from the golden blonde. Not because he wished to but something obstructed his path. A figure, clad in a white-hood and black pants held his wrist inhibiting him like a spider would when trapping a fly in it's web. As quick as the white one had appeared, a beam of black lightning materialized in his place. The bandit's screams pierced the air as his skeleton was illuminated for all to see such was the force of the blast that struck him to his knees. Amagiri stood, his hands pocketed only a few meters behind the bandit, a steely look decorating his eyes.

"Sorry to intervene.. I'm sure you had it covered. I just can't stand punks like this, y'see?" Amagiri smiled at her, bringing a hand to either side of his head to remove the hood that obscured his features. A delicate scar covered the right side of his face. Colourless eyes glanced forwards to meet the golden blonde's own.

The bandit, albeit zapped to within an inch of his life, rose to his feet once more with a grunt--interrupting the two wizard's brief and one-sided introduction.

"Piece of shit.. like a little blast like that's going to stop me.. AHHH! the bandit spun around and threw the knife as hard as he could towards Amagiri's chest, Having not expected the brute to rise from the blow, Amagiri's eyes widened and his arms ascended in an X formation to shield himself. He'd let his guard down, would he suffer for it?

Heat cannot be separated from fire, or beauty from The finite.

"I'm no one that you'd know."Eyes flickered to the child that had been tossed aside, grimacing at the unkind manner in which she had been treated. Once she was safe away from the man's grasp and back in her mothers arms, Venir found herself meeting the leaders stare. Her gaze was heated, violet eyes harder than steel. Brows were furrowed and nose was crinkled. The scent of the piked head was one she had only just now caught, the wind carrying it over and she dare not look at it for long.

"I guess I'm lucky I'm not a hero then-" She dug her boots into the ground, eyeing the meat cleaver he brandished. Her own fists were raised up, not in a defensive manner but ready to strike. "I'm just the bitch that came out of retirement to kick your ass!" Time had made her tongue sharper, and her vocabulary more colorful. There was none of the usual sweet charm, the soft smiles, or bubbly laughs. They deserved no such things from her. One hand gestured to him, motioning in a come hither motion, and come he did. Like a raging bull he charged with cleaver in hand. Yet the woman stood firm, unmoving, and entirely unphased. At least not until the weather had began to change.

The air felt charged. It was strange, like a sort of static that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. All it took was a moment for the source of the change to appear. A single moment for her to blink, and suddenly it was not the cleaving bandit in front of her but an apparent wall of white. "No, not a wall-" A person, wearing a white hooded cloak. He stood between her and the other man, having caught his hand before he even had a chance to hit her, and before she even had a chance to react.

    BOOM!

Lightning struck, it was not a bright light but an unholy black. Unnatural. Magic. "Like mine." The dim thought struck her, this time her arms did come up to shield her face out of instinct. The light might not have been as bright as true lightning but it was a startling flash, a loud crack, and the illumination of the bandits skeleton was hard to look at. The force of the blow was a hefty one, making even Venir slide back a few steps, her hair fanning out behind her. She had only ever met one other slayer, and he had used flames much like her own. Flames that could harm a god made of fire. This was something, no, someone else like her but different.

The hood was pulled away to reveal a handsome, almost gentlemanly face save for the sleek scar that crossed from the right side of  his forehead to his jaw. His smile was warm, and eyes soft. All it took was a glance to know he was friend and note foe. "O-Oh I could have handled-" Her excited stammer was cut short as it would seem their opponent was not yet finished. Despite receiving anything but a little blast of lightning. A knife was thrown not at her, but at the one that had landed the first blow. It was instinct that drove her to toss herself in front of the ivory stranger.

    "Flame Goddess' bellow!"

Pale pink lips opened, to allow jet black, purple tinted flames spiral out in front of her. The knife was caught up in the inferno but the cheap steel melted from the heat, and the bandit that had thrown the steel was caught in the blast. Perhaps it was because she was out of practice, or hadn't used her flames in sometime but the bellow was more powerful than she had intended, and it was far from within her control. "Stop!" She coughed, eyes watering and throat burning. When was the last time she had released her flames like that? "Too long ago. I don't remember." The torrent ceased but the vortex of fire traveled farther than initially intended, and was much larger than what she had wanted to create. Black flames licked and caught onto any wood it touched, as if outright logs were little more than kindling for her flames.

    "Oh gods, no not again!"

..to control the storm I must..

    Words: 802

    a tempest's tale: unexalted fear
    MASTERY
"Control thy emotions to control thy strength!"
    "O-oh my.."

Amagiri's eyes widened as the expulsion of black flames propelled themselves from the unknown woman's mouth. They coalesced and glided through the air majestically but equally destroyed everything in their path. There was some kind of destructive beauty about the way the inferno curled and danced around. The white-haired wizard's fascination with it all actually bought him a brief moment of absent-mindedness, lost in the graciousness of it all. It wasn't until the cataclysmic nature of the attack soon reared it's ugly face.

Despite inhibiting the blow that would have drawn Amagiri's life to a swift and conclusive end, the golden-haired beauty had also succeeded in lighting half the village at the same time. Flames began to lick the exposed wooden surfaces of the houses that surrounded the clearing. Black marks etched their way into the intricate foundations of these settlements and ruin soon began to set in. If the thunder slayer didn't act soon, true carnage would begin to unfurl; it wouldn't even matter how much destruction these bandits had caused--if these villagers didn't have a home to return to then they wouldn't want to be saved in the first place.

As if the situation couldn't descend into further furore, more bandits began to emerge from the huts that now leaked with curling wisps of grey smoke. Some of them boasted a similar build to the meaty thug that had opposed the two wizards before but they came in all shapes and sizes. There were skinny ones who wielded daggers, long and thin metallic blades that boasted wicked points that dripped with green liquid coated to their fatal endings. Similar meatheads who preferred the more obvious type of weaponry with massive clubs and hammers, clearly partial to the use of their own brute strength rather than tactically placed blows. There were some older men and women amongst the rabble too. Brown cloaks hung low over their shoulders and their bodies leaked with magical energies.

    "Wizards.."

Amagiri grimaced. The introduction of magical users definitely wouldn't make this situation any easier. Nor would his next plan for that matter.

"Guess we're going to have to leave the introductions for later. I'll take care of the damage, you hold off the bandits. I'll join you when I can..." his legs tensed as he prepared to move, every muscle in his body rippling as he prepared to vault himself into action. He stopped himself though with one last remark before unfurling his true magical power.

"..but I should let you know you're not the only one who can pull off a trick like that."

He winked at her before shifting himself into a more combative posture. The white-haired one tensed his body and his lungs inflated rapidly. His jaw clenched as his eyes shone brightly as if miniature thunderbolts had materialized themselves within his irises.

    "Thunder God's Bellow!"

The swelling in his chest all disappeared at once while rippling black lightning expelled itself in a cylindrical beam from his open orifice. The shards of coalescent lightning ripped through the ground, scattering debris from the square into the air. The laser-like roar barelled itself into the first wave of oncoming bandits. High-pitched shrieks and wails could be heard from amongst their ranks as their bodies lit up with the black electricity that incessantly stung and tore at them from every possible angle. Amagiri regained his composure and prepared to set off but not before saying a few last words.

"I really appreciate your help. It takes a special kind of person to help someone without any kind of reward, y'know? You may not be a hero to yourself, but you're certainly one to me." he flashed her a heart-warming smile, shining his white-teeth and closing his eyes to display a genuine sign of appreciation and affection towards her.

"Don't fall head over heels yet, little one. You've got bigger fish to fry." the malicious tone in his head chimed in for a moment. Amagiri grit his teeth in annoyance but nodded to himself and leaped away to the nearby rooftop. Flames licked it's wooden coating and threatened to collapse the foundations that so desperately tried to hold off their powerful aggressor at bay. White-hair flew around his gentle features as a wicked spontaneous wind whipped up.

Taking a moment to breathe, Amagiri glanced around only to notice a water-tank that the villagers clearly used for supplies of some kind. It was gargantuan in stature; clearly compensating for the lack of a natural water source nearby. It would have to do. Rocketing off in it's direction, the young wizard hoped he'd be able to deal with this problem swiftly to help the stranger who'd graciously stepped in. There were a lot of bandits after all.
