    Spoiler:

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Becoming a Fairy Tail member hadn't really... changed anything, per se. It's not like he felt physically or even that emotionally different than he had been before. After all, in totality, it was just the addition of someone to answer to in his life, a place to constantly pick up jobs and a tattoo stamped onto his body to showcase his allegiance. Truthfully, most people would be bouncing off the walls with excitement at the prospect. And sure, Mythal was at least a little jubilant at the fact that he could have a reliable source of jewel. But there was a small mental, if not emotional change. Having the responsibility of being true and dedicated to a single person, let alone an entire guild, was odd; almost discomforting. He never really voiced his displeasure with humans as a species, as it sounded a bit hypocritical, but he certainly didn't enjoy spending copious amounts of time with them. Yet here he was, allying himself with an entire establishment that was known for putting its members ahead of anything else.

It was going to take some getting used to, that was for sure.

He had taken the first job that had been pinned up, not even bothering to look at it before snatching and pocketing it. Once he had left the guild, he had taken the time to pull it out and look it over. In retrospect, he wished he had stopped and at least briefly scanned it. It was a fairly simple job; deliver a letter to someone living in the Ace of Spades. If he could recall, that was the guild town that had been constructed around the legal guild, Sabertooth. A long travel for little pay; not something he was exactly expecting to do as his first official job. But he lost his right to be picky the moment he snatched and ran without consideration. Hell.

So as he headed out towards the large desert that was home to Ace of Spades, he could only think on what a fool he'd been. That conclusion was further hammered into his head as he looked up at one point and found a massive, whirling wall of sand bearing down on him. Double hell. Luckily for him, he spotted the faintest shadowing of a cavern buried against a dune. He sprinted towards it, even as the coarse wall bore down upon him. As he burst through the first wave of sand in his way and emerged inside the cave, he was surprised, yet again, by what he found inside.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

As Mythal entered the small opening to the cavern, he found himself standing before two archers of unknown origin. They had been setting up a fireplace by the looks of it; with some other small packs of equipment and food. They were far more prepared for setting up a camp here than the Fallen God Slayer was.  They were human as well -- he could tell by the wild and shocked looks in their eyes at his sudden emergence. Immediately their hands flew to their bows and quivers and pulled them up in front of them, setting them in place so that Mythal was now their target. Yet neither loosed an arrow upon him yet; that gave him time to put his hands up slowly, showing his unarmed status.

"Hey, how 'bout we just take it easy, fellas?" He said, opening a line of negotiation with the two.

"Who are you? Who sent you?" The one on his left demanded, pushing his bow a bit more forward so he seemed threatening.

"Calm down, I'm just here to take cover from the storm. I just want to get to the Ace of Spades and that's it. No one sent me here for nothin'," he explained. He even gestured to himself, showing he was bearing nothing of import.

"It doesn't matter if he's here for the treasure or not. We can't let him leave to tell anyone he saw us here. Then the tomb's location will be out there for anyone to hear," the other one hissed at his compatriot.

Treasure? Tomb? Mythal only presumed two types of people went looking for any kind of tombs in this world. Either archeologists or grave robbers and taking into consideration the weapons, he assumed these two were the latter. And considering how serious they seemed about keeping him quiet...

Mythal launched himself forward, dashing between the two in an instant. Before they could even turn their bows to match his new placement, his magic surged into his limbs in the form of black veins popping up over his skin. His right hand snapped out in a palm strike to the archer on the left's hip, turning him off his position. He twisted around and brought his knee up into the other archer's stomach, driving the wind out of his stomach and keeping his bow off target. His left leg came up and launched his heel into the first archer's chin, lifting him from the ground. And he finished it off with a hard punch to the second archer's solar plexus, knocking all the fight and remaining air from his body. A shuddering gasp escaped the man stuck on his fist before he fell to the ground, followed immediately by his comrade.

Mythal dropped his guard momentarily and looked at each one of the archers. "Sorry boys," he grumbled. He peeled his eyes away from them and, instead, looked down the dark path that dove deeper into the sands. The storm was keeping him from proceeding any further anyways...

Might as well see what this "treasure" was all about.

The darkness of the sand caverns was nice; a pleasant alternative to the scorching sun that had been in the sky prior to the storm. Add in the fact that the sand basically bounced that heat and light back and Mythal had felt like he was dying in an oven. But down here, beneath the dunes, it was chilly and dark and the God Slayer had never felt more at ease. He calmly walked through the weaving tunnels, his ears perked but his gait even and undisturbed. No reason to rush after all; this seemed to be the only way up from the underground so it wasn't like anyone could sneak by him. He'd be able to smell them before that happened.

A flickering light caught his attention, his feet continuing their onward shuffle towards it. As the mouth of the tunnel began to open up, he could see sconces hanging along the walls with low-burning torches in each one. Someone must have come through here and lit them as they explored. That or they had been burning all this time. They did live in a magic-filled world after all. He leaned back gently as the cavern opened up further, revealing a mighty ancient ruin. It looked like an old temple from pictures he had seen as a child; when the primitive people built temples and buildings to worship gods. Pillars rose up from the ground on either side, long sand-stone columns that were carved with vivid images of ancient life. He ran his hand along the surface as he walked by, feeling the smoothness of it. Even after all this time, they were in peak condition.

Even the temple that stood at the end of the cavern looked remarkably untouched. Had the caves been completely undisturbed all this time? Or had someone simply left the spoils in an effort to capture some pesky, greedy flies? "Humans are greedy pests after all," Mythal muttered to himself as he continued forward, now even more determined to see what lay at the end of the road.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

The temple's innards were just as tall and empty as the rest of the cavern, though much smoother than the natural-formed stone walls. Familiar imagery was still etched into the walls all around him, along with the pillars that ran the length of the building's sides. Two large goblets stood in carved out holes within the back wall, fire billowing out past the lip of each cup. And resting in the center of the back wall was a sarcophagus of such grand design, Mythal was a bit struck. It had gold and silver laid into its face, crafting an epic outline of a man. Precious gems had seen inset upon the eyes and other parts of the body, causing the body image to glimmer in the firelight. It was quite spectacular.

What wasn't spectacular was the man standing in front of the grand coffin. He was already shoving his fingers into the line between the coffin's top and bottom, trying to get a firm enough grip to pull it open. "Ain't you ever seen those horror movie lacrimas? This is how curses get spread around," Mythal said to the man as he walked up to him from behind.

He hadn't expected the looter to react as quickly as he had. One moment he was attempting to open the coffin, the next he was spinning around and thrusting the sharp end of his polearm at Mythal. The Fallen God Slayer had just enough time to jump back and to the side to avoid being impaled on the sharp point on the end, its iron tip flashing violently in the fire. Mythal landed a few feet back of the man, skidding along the sandstone before coming to a halt.

"Well that was just rude," Mythal spoke again, looking up at the man in annoyance.

"Coming from the guy that snuck up on me, that's rich," the looter snapped back, bringing his polearm back and planting it on the ground. "You're not one of my people. Who the hell are you?"

"I'm the guy that heard you were lootin' old graves and decided to see what all the fuss was about. Your guys were talkin' about treasure," Mythal explained, keeping his hands in his pockets.

"Idiots didn't listen to a damn word I said. You see this room?" The bandit leader gestured to the room around them. "It used to be filled with treasure. Gold, diamonds, jewels beyond imagining. But then old Gold Rodgers found it and took all of its precious wealth for himself."

Gold Rodgers? "The famous thief? The one everyone says stole from the Gods themselves?"

"You got it; the King of the Pirates himself. He hid much of his fortune all away in places beyond sight and sound. But at the end of his days, he came back here and passed within this casket. No one knows why."

Mythal scratched his chin. "I think you got your stories wrong, pal. Gold Rodgers had a tomb built for himself with all the wealth he had. So if you're sayin' he's here, then you found his tomb, not some ancient ruin he plundered before."

"You're wrong. Why would this place have such intricate carvings of ancient life if it was built for a modern day thief?!" The bandit leader snapped back, clearly annoyed at being told he was wrong.

The God Slayer shrugged. "Probably because he liked it? Ol' Rodgers supposedly robbed everywhere and probably saw a whole lot of ruins just like this. Maybe he took a likin' to it and decided to make his tomb the same. Legends say he did have quite the ego."

"You're wrong!" The bandit leader insisted again. "I'm going to rip this coffin open and find his body. And there I'm going to find a map to his treasure, so I can be the new Pirate King!"

Once again, Mythal shrugged. "I'm sure you'll find his body but you'll only find that. Maybe his clothes too. Those could fetch a pretty penny," he said with a tricky smirk. "Won't make ya the Pirate King; more like the Servant to the Pirate Kin-"

He wasn't able to finish his last sentence as the bandit leader roared and leapt at him, the polearm swinging up and around to point at him. He jabbed at Mythal with all his strength, watching with glee as the wiry man was knocked back and seemingly impaled on the right shoulder.

Yet as the dust cleared, for his sudden movement had kicked up stone dust on the ground, he found that wasn't the case. In fact, Mythal had caught the polearm right in his... well, he wanted to call it a hand but it wasn't quite that. Instead, it seemed his entire hand and forearm was covered in a hardened black substance that was darker than anything he had ever seen before. It gripped the point of his polearm tight, keeping him from moving.

"And though it doesn't matter much to me..." Mythal began as he turned back around to face the bandit leader. "Rodgers ain't the only one that's robbed a God."

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

The bandit leader had no words for this mysterious man, even as the onyx black gauntlet released his weapon and sent him falling forward and off balance. Mythal's reinforced hand rushed forward and smashed into the man's face, knocking him backwards even as he stumbled forwards. The bandit leader nearly fell over, his jaw aching from the first attack that had landed against him. But it wasn't the last; a stream of right-handed attacks began to rain down on him, each one stinging worse than the last. Punches, backhands, thrust punches, knife edges; each one struck with the deadly accuracy of a practiced fighter. He managed to find his grip on his polearm and swing it blindly at the man, hoping to find and connect with some part of his body.

But it found none, as the man disappeared into the ground. He quite literally fell into the sandstone, like he was some kind of ghost! The shadows from the flames behind him had created a perfect shadow spot for Mythal to drop into and then pop back out behind the shocked bandit. This knife edge was the one that did the trick; it struck the sweet spot between the collar bone and the neck, temporarily cutting off the blood flow. The bandit leader went rigid for a quick moment and then fell face first onto the ground, his polearm clattering against the stone beside him.

Mythal snorted as he shook the gauntlet free from his hand, causing the shadows to disperse into the air around him. He walked over and kicked the polearm further away from the man, just in case he managed to regain his consciousness faster than anticipated. With all of that set, he turned and looked at the coffin of the apparent Gold Rodgers. He looked over the front of it once more, taking in the beautiful colors, before he reached out and took hold of the top. With ease he pulled it free, the coffin itself belching out a cloud of smoke and ancient air. He deposited the top of the coffin to the side and then turned his gaze once more upon the sarcophagus.

A skeleton stood/lay inside, its arms crossed over its chest. The skin and flesh on it had long side evaporated, leaving only the bones beneath. The hollow, empty eyes stared past him, perhaps towards the ending of life's long road. While that was interesting, what was far more fascinating was the leather bag that rested between his legs. Mythal curiously bent down and reached in, pulling the bag out and dropping it onto the ground. He flipped open the cover and glanced inside. There was a set of clothes, much like the ones Rodgers was rumored to have worn in his time. And on top of that was an orb, an ancient looking globe the size of a sports ball. Mythal reached in and pulled the orb out, holding it in his palm and clasped tight by his fingers. It was a deep green, the color of the darkest depths of the ocean. It reminded him of chiseled granite, with its differing shades and hues beneath its surface. "Clothes and a stone ball," Mythal said a loud, turning his gaze up towards Gold Rodgers' skeleton. "Maybe you were more philosophical than people gave you credit for." He dropped the ball back into the leather bag and then hoisted it up and over his shoulder. With his "treasure" attained, Mythal lifted the sarcophagus cover back up and laid it back on top of the coffin, making sure it sunk back in place. With nothing else to do, he gave the bandit leader a passing glance and headed out of the ruin, hoping that the storm above had cleared up.
