Arghast looked around the place known as the Forgotten Desert. He did his best to find something, some feature that might be more interesting than sand dunes... And more sand dunes... And yet more... 'Ah stop it, it's a desert, a great big desert with a beauty all its own you just need to find it' Arghast thought sourly to himself. Though he had a love of natural places the sheer lack of... Anything disturbed him and reminded him of a desolate wasteland devoid of all life.
He shivered on spite of the heat at the thought and looked towards the professors camp site that he had set up.
Turning to Eero, his companion on this mission, Arghast fidgeted for a second before deciding what to say.
'A bit desolate here isn't it? Makes you wonder what was here before to call it "Forgotten".
Ah it seems the good professor has set up a boundary for this little dig of ours, I wonder if he has any idea of how big this creature is we're supposed to be digging up?'

Arghast tried not to scowl as he spoke but allowed himself to cross his arms as he spoke. How successful he was in looking and sounding friendly he could only guess at....

This was going to be the first job as a member of a guild. It sure felt different from the life Eero had been leading up until now. It felt so different that he felt himself melting. The job was located in the Forgotten Deserts. Sand as far as eye could see. The heat was slowly but surely getting to him and he didn't like that. But he was already here, along with a fellow guildmate, as a matter of fact. The duo of Eero and Arghast took upon the job of excavating some creature's remains for an archeologist.

They were standing in a campsite that had been set up at the digsite. The heat was scorching, making Eero sigh in annoyance as he put a white piece of cloth on his head, a feeble attempt to protect himself. Arghast spoke up about the desert and the digsite. The desert reminded him of his of mind, if he had to be honest. Vast and empty at the same time. The boy would turn to his guildmate. "He may have a theory, but it ultimately falls to us to uncover it." Eero would grab a nearby flask of water that one could sling across their shoulder. "The sooner we start, the sooner we can take a closer look at it!" He would say with a faint smile as he walked over to a box that had archeologist's tools such as brushes, shovels, chisels and whatnot displayed on top of it. The boy would reach for a large brush and a broom-looking tool.

Arghast looked across the tools they had been provided and pondered the shovel first, the dig site had been marked and though it was only sand they were dealing with he felt sure that they would need to dig a decent way down before they uncovered much of worth.
With this in mind Arghast followed Eero's lead and took a water skin tying it around himself so that it wouldn't get in the way during digging but could be easily accessed without having to set the tools down.
Looking at his palms he noted the build up of sweat already and knew that if the handles got wet they would pick up alot of sand once they were set down again.

'I'll take the shovel and dig at the edges, that way I won't be sweeping sand into you and we can get a good reckoning of how deep we might need to go' Arghast haltingly told Eero unsure of his idea or how useful it would actually be.

Not wishing to get in his Guild mates way, Arghast had picked a corner to start at and dug in his shovel carefully through the sand, carefully placing the mound he had dug up behind him away from the edge.
He kept looking over at Eero still turning over the puzzle that was the boy over in his mind, trying to work out how to phrase a question without seeming rude or obnoxious.

Post by Elyon 14th May 2018, 2:23 pm

The boy was armed with the two tools he had chosen for the time being. After the duo had worked on the digsite he would need to exchange them for different ones, most likely. He was unsure if his choice of tools was correct in the first place. As much as he loved reading about history, he had yet to do something practical like this. Eero saw Arghast take a flask himself and choose his own tools for the job. The man decided to tackle the edges of the digsite. The sand was fickle, however, and trying to dig deep would be tricky. Eero would nod at Arghast's decision. "Gotcha. I'll see what I can do." He would say, thinking about what he could do to pitch in.

The heat was messing with his thoughts as he entered the digsite itself, feeling the sweat forming on his forehead. He would attach the smaller brush he chose before to one of his belts. Eero would take the broom-thing in both his hands, turning ir around, so that the stick was pointing on the sand below. The theory was that he would carefully stick the stick into the sand in various places of the digsite, in an attempt to pinpoint the remains' precise location. The theory also sounded quite far-fetched and definitely not a technique a seasoned professor of archaeology would use. "I'll try to pinpoint the location of the remains, so that you won't have to shovel too much. If this works at all, that is." Eero would murmur the last sentence to himself as he started to stick the stick into the sand.

Post by Arghast 15th May 2018, 2:06 am

Arghast dug whilst Eero tried to pinpoint the remains. It was slow going as the sand would every now and then shift from the edge of the site and sink into the hole that Arghast had started but there was progress being made.
Stopping to wipe sweat from his brow and palms he took a quick swig of his water, contemplating how best to excavate. Though he knew how to make a fire and build a shelter from fallen wood and other such forestry he had never had to dig a hole in such a fickle substance before, Arghast was just glad there was no wind to blow the sand everywhere. Though that was a bitter-sweet help as it also meant there was no relief from the sun beating down upon them.
Arghast contemplated the tools before them again reevaluating the brushes, once they had uncovered even a small part of the creature they would have a decent start, they could just then brush around the area they had found and this would go so much smoother.
As he spoke he noticed a slight shifting of the sand underfoot. 'Swarming insects surely couldn't survive here....' Sparing a quick glance towards Eero to see if he had noticed Arghast quickly moved down the trench he had created and started digging again.

It wasn't too much longer before he felt something scrape ever so slightly against the shovel blade, he only noticed it because all the rest of the shovel loads had felt like cutting through a silk sheet.

Checking behind him first to see the shifting had stopped Arghast called out to Eero 'Hey, I think I've struck something over here. You found much else at your side?'

The boy used his technique of stick the stick around the various points of the digsite. The sweat from the immense heat made his blonde fringe stick to his forehead. He took a drink from his flask and continued his work. At some point he thought he found something, but it only turned out to be a rock that was shallowly buried in the sand. The discovery made Eero feel little sad. He started thinking about a possible other technique, when Arghast caught his attention, saying that he may have found something. When he asked if Eero had found anything, it only stung that much more. "I didn't find anything, so let's take a look at what you've got." The boy would say and make his way to his guildmate's side of the digsite.

He would notice the spot Arghast had been digging at. With the broom end of the broom-thing the boy would start to carefully brush away the sand. It was surprisingly hard, as the sand kept sliding back down, but soon enough he would uncover something that could resemble the remains that they were after. "Nice find, Arghast." The boy would praise his job companion and wipe some of the sweat on his forehead. "I'm not sure if this is what we are looking for, but it's our only lead that we have." The boy would say as he started to brush off more of the sand to the side. He would try his best to not let any sand ruin Arghast's previous work.

Arghast looked down at what they had started to uncover, it was incredibly yellowed and not connected to anything that he could see yet. He had stopped using the shovel as he was afraid that he might damage whatever they were after, instead he had switched to a sweeping tool which he was using to clear as much sand away from the immediate area that he could. Before too long though his patience ran out, he took a swig of water and picked up his shovel. He started to dig around the object in the hope that he could uncover more of it or its boundary, it was an incredibly slow thing to start particularly when he was doing his very best to stop and sand slides that might cover over the work they'd both put in.
Arghast wiped sweat from his brow and felt beads of sweat starting to trickle down his back and arms. He grimaced, it was not a pleasant feeling at all. Not wanting to be the first to complain but knowing that they had probably spent longer in the heat than they should have done Arghast put his shovel down. 'Hey Eero, perhaps we should take a break in the shade over there. We don't want to get heat stroke and we've been out here for quite some time already we can continue once we've rehydrated and rested our limbs.' This was said with a hint of a question as Arghast indicated the tarpaulin held up by a couple of rickety poles.
'How do you think might be best to continue? Should we excavate from the beginning we've made or try to figure out where the rest might be and begin digging in other places too?'

Post by Elyon 19th May 2018, 8:20 am

The duo made some progress, but not much. Eero was almost out of water, the heat clouding his mind. The fact that they had to work with sand instead of something more stable, like dirt, also slowed down the process, considerably. They uncovered some parts of whatever they found, but it seemed that it was either surprisingly small, or buried deeper in the sand. The latter thought scared him. Luckily for Eero, Arghast suggested taking a break and the boy couldn't be happier to agree. They took refuge under a simple tarp that provided some shade. His t-shirt and head towel were completely wet from the sweat, making him feel slightly disgusted. Arghast inquired about the next step. If he had to be honest, Eero had no idea on how to proceed further. The heat was really getting to him.

Eero would ponder for a moment. "I think that since we have already started digging in that spot, we might as finish unearthing whatever is buried there." He would say, once he felt his body temperature fall a bit. "Perhaps the professor will be satisfied with that and we won't get a heat stroke." Eero would add with a little nervous laugh as he stood up and refilled his flask. "Unless you feel like trying to dig elsewhere. I didn't find anything before, so yeah." He really didn't want to go under the scorching sun again, but the longer they loitered around, the longer they would have to be there. The boy would attach his flask to one of his belts and head out into the sun again.

Post by Arghast 21st May 2018, 12:46 am

Eero made a good point and Arghast could feel the heat digging its fiery fingers into him, pulling yet more sweat from his body.
'I agree if we can get what we have got unearthed that may satisfy the professor, its probable that the complete skeleton isn't here anyway, would explain why we've found so little after digging so long'
He drank down the last of his water then refilled his flask again. He cast his gaze around at the tools they had left and picked out one of the smaller shovels thinking to dig underneath the bits they had revealed so as to start removing them from ground.
Approaching their excavation works he bent down to study the small pieces they had found from as many angles as he could. Arghast carefully used his small shovel tool to dig away at the sand underneath it being incredibly careful not to disturb the rest of the sand, fearful that he could cause a cascade which would undo much of their work.
It was slower work than using the large shovel to dig around the edges as he had been doing but he gradually managed to dig underneath the finds without disturbing too much of the surrounding area.
Unfortunately the sweat on his palms caused his tool to slip and sand flowed back into where he had just been digging. 'Damn' Arghast cursed under his breath.
He shifted his grip on his shovel and went at it again this time even slower, careful not to cause another cascade. Before long he felt that he may have removed enough of the surrounding sand to maybe give pulling it out a go.
'Okay I'm going to try to pull this bit out, I think I've taken away as much of the surrounding sand as I can but there might be some shifting, can you keep an eye out and let me now if I disturb too much?' Arghast tensed himself ready to pull when Eero gave the nod.

His companion agreed with Eero's train of thought and they got to work on the digging again. The boy had a smaller brush with him, which he used to brush away from the supposed remains, while also brushing away the sand from the edges of the sand-hole, to make sure that none of the sand fell back in. The sun kept on shining as the two worked away. They slowly but surely uncovered more and more. Arghast was using a smaller shovel, that slipped out of his fingers at one point. He seemed flustered as he muttered under his breath. Eero didn't think anything bad about that, though. He was more surprised that he hasn't dropped anything, considering his current mental state.

The sweat covered his back and forehead. It was no use trying to wipe it away, in mere seconds there would be the same amount of it again. Eero would take a drink from his flask, as Arghast asked if they could perhaps lift the remains up. They did put a decent dent into the sand by then. Not to mention that Eero was truthfully eager to see if they would be able to finish the job with this find. The boy was tasked with overlooking the surrounding sand. "Go for it." He would give his job companion a nod, letting him know that his sight was ready. If Arghast would start pulling the remains out of the sand, they would be rather long, resembling something along a spine. "Keep going. I think it will be buried kind of deep." Eero would say, carefully reach out and sweep away the sand from the hole they dug, trying to loosen the spine-like bone and help Arghast pulling it out.

Being as gentle as he could Arghast pulled hand over hand rather than attempting to walk it backwards, knowing that the ground he stood on wasn't the most stable and a sand slide could cause them problems. As he pulled he could see that it resembled a spine of some kind.
Hearing Eero say it could be buried deeper made Arghast scowl, how big was this thing? Hopefully the Professor could tell them more about it after they had finished getting at it.
Taking a moment to wipe sweat from his hand and arms Arghast started to pull again noting that it was starting to get slightly larger as they got further along it. This development was a double edged sword, the slight increase in size gave Arghast better purchase as he pulled, it also proved harder to shift as a result though. Despite this Arghast would not let a long dead remnant beat him, taking a long breath he leant back as he pulled heaving another good portion out of the sand.
As Eero loosened the sand around it the spine eventually came more freely.
'I think its almost there, if we pull together it should come loose' At least he hoped that was the case he wasn't sure he could keep hold of it much longer if it wasn't.

As Arghast was pulling out the spine thing, it progressively was getting bigger and bigger. As if it wasn't big already. It seemed that a good portion of the bone was out, but still not completely out. Eero's sand clearing helped just a tiny bit, which made him feel like Arghast was doing all of the work. It was Arghast who found the bone and dug out most of the sand. So when his companion said that the spine would most likely come out completely, if both of them pulled at the same time. Eero took this as a chance to redeem himself a bit.

The boy would try to to angle himself in a way that he had a good grip on the spine, he wasn't sinking into the sand and Arghast had space for his own positioning. With their combined effort, the duo would finally get the bone out of the sand, gently putting it down on more stable sand. Eero was dripping sweat, but mostly just because of the sheer temperature and exposure to sun. He couldn't possibly imagine how Arghast must've felt. But they were so close to the end. At least he hoped they were. The boy wanted to take a break, but it would most likely be better if they brought the bone into a shaded area. "How about we take this thing out of the digsite and then drench ourselves in water? Especially you, Arghast, you deserve it." The boy would ask his companion amusedly, as he wiped the sweat off of his forehead.

Post by Arghast 29th May 2018, 12:52 am

Having heaved the spine out together Arghast collapsed onto the sand next to it panting and sheathed in sweat. They had done it, and Arghast had barely thought of his anxiety in the final dig of this job. Huh perhaps he was getting better at this whole thing after all. Looking across at Eero he realised that they both looked an absolute state. It took him a moment to work out what Eero had said though, the heat was starting to get to him, wonderful this would only make moving this thing that much more difficult. But Eero was right, this thing needed to be moved into the shade and a water drench sounded perfect right about now.
'Indeed let's get this shaded and do exactly that, you deserve it as much as I, alone I could not have managed.' Arghast tried to give what he had thought of as a friendly smile, but knowing he hadn't done a lot of broad smiling before he wasn't sure the effect it had.
Arghast heaved himself up off the sand, grimacing at the feeling of hot sand sticking to his skin, this stuff would be a nightmare to clean off he could feel it. He moved over to the spine and took as firm a grip as he could on it waiting until Eero had a grip on the other end, together they half lifted and half dragged the spine into the shade. As soon as it was in cover from the sun Arghast resumed his collapsed state on the ground. It took him a few minutes but he levered himself up and found the remaining water skins dividing them up, leaving a couple to one side as they had to make it out of this place as well and keeping them selves hydrated would be key.
'I've kept a few back for the return for us to drink but the rest are fair game.' With that he picked one up and poured it over his head relishing the feeling, though the water wasn't exactly cold it was certainly cooler than outside was, the water slicing away a goodly portion of the sweat that had accumulated over the course of the dig.
'We should contact the professor too, I think from the looks of things we may have found all we're going to here'

Both mages were sitting on the hot sand, trying to catch their breath. The bone was laying down nearby. Arghast agreed to the water drench Eero proposed earlier. The other man said that Eero deserved water aswell, but the boy wasn't so sure. With a grunt and some difficulty he managed to stand up. Arghast stood up aswell, exhaustion apparent on his features aswell. Eero tried not to think about the every grain of sand he could feel sticking to his person and got a good enough of a grip on the bone. The mages were too tired to lift the weight properly, but managed to get it back into the safety of the shade safely.

Arghast decided to give in to his exhaustion and lie down again. Eero on the other hand knew himself enough, that if he did that, he wouldn't be able to get back up, no matter how hard he would try. Arghast had set aside some of the leftover waterskins and Eero gladly took one and almost literally inhaled the water that resided within. He was about to take another waterskin to cool his head off, when his companion mentioned that it would be a wise idea to let the professor know about their find. The professor should've been in the shaded area, but the boy didn't know where exactly that was supposed to be. "I'll go look for the professor. He most likely put up a tent nearby to hide himself from the heat." Eero would say to Arghast and went to look around the small base they had.

His legs felt like lead, but the sooner he could find the man, the sooner the mages could leave and have their deserved drink with a shower. Luckily for the boy, the tent was quite visible and quite close aswell. "Excuse me!" He would say loudly and enter the sand-coloured tent. The bulky professor was sittingon a simple folding chair behind a folding table. At thesound of Eero's arrival he swung his head towards its origin. "Did you dig up something, boys?" The would ask with excitement apparent in his voice. Eero would nod in agreement. "We dug up a spine-like bone. It's really big in size, too." He would quickly describe their find. The professor nodded enthusiasticly and stood up. The man zipped past Eero and disappeared outside. The boy swiftly wondered how a man of that wideness was able to move that fast and followed him outside himself.

The boy would walk back the short distance and see the professor already examining the find. "Is the bone any good?" Eero would ask in a hopeful voice as he reached for a waterskin to wash away some of his sweat.

Archaelogy with wolves! [Job Arghast with Eero] Empty Re: Archaelogy with wolves! [Job Arghast with Eero]

Arghast didn't look around and barely registered that Eero had said he would find the professor. He was too busy being laid down and cooling off from the harsh desert sun. He could feel its claws still dug into his skin, though the cool water was beginning to leach out some of it and provided welcome relief when combined with the shade.

At the sound of the Professors approach Arghast looked up and took in the sight of the rather large man stooped over the spine they had dug up, running his hands just above it as though to touch it would be to tempt it to disappear entirely.

Arghast heard Eero ask if the bone was any good to the professor, he hoped it certainly was he didn't think he could dig any further. Looking at Eero it was apparent that he was exhausted too.

'What?' the professor seemed to have forgotten they were even there! Taking a moment to compose himself he realised what had been asked.
'Ah yes it seems that you have found yet another piece of my puzzle, this is splendid! Judging from its size it is indeed the only piece in this precise spot. I thank you for your efforts fine mages I shall arrange it's transport forthwith!'

'Oh yes your payment for services rendered will be sent ahead of you, I imagine you'd want to leave this place? I don't think this heat is very healthy to anyone for an extended period of time such as yours.'
The professor produced a handkerchief which he used to mop his immense brow of the sweat that had pooled there as he was speaking.
Once finished speaking the professor walked off and pulled out a messenger lacrima fingers flying as he sent what seemed to be a stream of messages.

Looking over at Eero Arghast would haul himself up to a sitting position with his legs crossed and take a few deep breaths before slowly rising to stand. Once stood he clocked his head in what he hoped was a friendly gesture.
'Well, how about it? Shall we head back to the Guild?'

The boy poured a bit of water into his palm and ran it across his face, in an attempt to wash away the sweat clinging to his face and refresh himself at the same time. He did this a few times, until he felt satisfied enough and drank the rest of the water that was left in the waterskin. He felt refreshed, but that feeling didn't last long. The general heat of the air that surrounded him was still uncomfortable and making him sweat. Eero noticed that Arghast sat up, as the professor examined their find. It seemed that the large man momentarily forgot about their presence, taking a bit of time before he answered Eero's previous question. According to the professor they found something that was quite important and that was all that mattered to the boy at the moment. As long as it meant that both Eero and Arghast could get out of the desert, it was alright with him.

The professor had most likely noticed the mages' exhaustion, since he himself noted a way out of the desert. He also said something about payment, but in all honesty, all that Eero wanted was to go back to the guildhall that was hidden away in snowy mountains. The prospect of cold snow sounded great. The professor wiped the sweat off of his face with a handkerchief and went off to type a few messages on his lacrima-based device. Eero wanted to be intrigued by it, but he just couldn't. So as soon as Arghast asked whether they should go back to the Guild, there was only one answer possible. "Yes. The professor seems happy with our find, so I think that is our cue to get out of here and properly cool down." The boy would say as he walked over to Arghast, offering him his left hand to help him stand up with a tired smile. "Let us away."
