Wearing an olive green t-shirt and khaki long pants with boots, Leona carried her ever-present pack of supplies on her back and Argent Gloves on her hands. Today she had arrived in the Spooky Forest with Eero to to gather materials for use in creating magic weapons. In the course of exercising her research skills, Leona got the idea to make a bladed weapon. Her knife was perfect for fighting in close quarters but had too short a reach. Her ram dao had reach but was almost impossible to use in close quarters and was too slow to use in fights against multiple enemies.

What she needed was something like a shortsword or a machete. She was favoring the machete because outside of battle it could be used to cut through thick brush. With that idea in mind, she then researched possible magic materials to use in the weapon's creation. Two plants came to mind... nightshade and mandrake.

As much as Leona did not like poisoned weapons, she realized that others did not share her aversion to them. If she wanted to survive in a hostile world, she needed to change her mindset. She also needed an equalizer against tougher opponents like the barbarian king from Lycan Woods. Poison could be that equalizer. She found it difficult to ignore poison's association with assassins, but she would have to if she wanted to survive to old age.

Leona could deal with that issue later. Right now she had to focus on the present. Beside her was Eero, her guildmate. He too was looking to make a magic weapon from materials found in Spooky Forest.

"Hey Eero! What type of weapon do you plan on making?" Leona asked him, hoping to dispel a bit of the tension of being in the forest.

They arrived at the Spooky Forest. As silly as the name sounded, it fit the place. Everything was dark and the atmosphere was cold. A shiver went down his spine. He felt uneasy in this place, but there was research to be had later on, so he just had to press on. He was looking for something called Death Vine and Dark Oak. He was thinking of creating a weapon - a staff, more specifically, to extend his melee range. The Death Vine, as he found out, had special properties such as snaring, strangulation and enlarging, some of which he could use in his arsenal. The wood of Dark Oak was supposed to absorb and hold onto magical properties quite well.

At least he wasn't alone - he was joined by his guildmate Leona  and his newest companion, Soho. The bird that they rescued not too long ago. He was finally fully healed, but when the time came to release him back into the wild, he decided to stay. Eero wasn't sure if he was ready to take care of somebody else besides himself, but if he had to be honest with himself, he could use some challenge, so he took him in. Soho was circling above the treetops of the spooky trees, keeping a lookout. He had no idea where to start his search. That was when Leona asked him about the weapon he sought to create. "Hey Leona!" Eero would greet back his guildmate and wave at Soho, signalizing for him to come down. "I was thinking of making a staff. Well, more of a just a whooping stick, but a slightly magical one." He would chuckle. He certainly wasn't after a mage's staff or the like. Soho swooped down shortly, landing on Eero's right shoulder. "Also, I think I should properly introduce you. Soho, this is Leona. And Leona, this is Soho." The boy would motion from the bird to his guildmate and then vice versa. Soho would extend his right wing in a greeting. "What are you after, Leona?" Eero would ask his guildmate in return. He too, was interested in what Leona had in mind.

"You're looking to make a staff, huh?" Leona asked of Eero. She kind of figured him for a staff user. He looked like the kind of guy who thought about more than just combat. Leona would do well to think about something other than fighting. Unfortunately, fighting was about all the blonde was good at.

"Me? I'm looking to make a bladed weapon, specifically a machete. Something that's a middle ground between a knife and a two-handed sword. I also want it to have something else, some special magical property. I'm not sure what, though." Leona admitted to Eero. She was still on the fence about making the blade secrete poison. She decided to put settling that issue on hold until she got back to the guild hall. In the meantime Eero introduced his new pet bird. Its name was Soho.

"Hi there Soho!" Leona introduced herself to the bird. She was glad that it had made a full recovery and was able to fly under its own power. Even if it was only a bird, she had helped save a life. Being able to save life as well as take it always made Leona feel that her efforts were worthwhile. Unfortunately, saving life sometimes meant taking it to protect others.

Jacob Goodnight was one example. He was too far gone to ever talk down. So were Bladdi Maccoi and Mutura. Neither one of them would back down. Leona had to kill them all to save many more lives.

"I'm looking for nightshade or mandrake plants. I wanna give my weapon a special plant-based property. I'm not sure what, though." Leona disclosed a bit more of her plan to her guildmate. He was no enemy. He was also smarter than she was, so he might have a few suggestions he was willing to share with her.

"What plants are you after?" Leona asked Eero.

Unlike Eero, Leona was going to plunge into the realm of bladed weapons. She said that she was thinking of making a machete, but wasn't sure about the abilities that she was going to imbue it with. While Eero knew that Leona preferred combat, he didn't know what style of combat she used. More aggresive or more defensive style? Or maybe a balanced style? It was hard to tell, since he never fought alongside Leona, not even sparred. /"We should do that sometimes, to train and have some fun while thinking of new strategies."/ That sounded like a great idea. For the future.

The boy was glad to see that Leona was pleased with Soho's recovery. Eero was still surprised that the bird decided to stick with him. But he would make sure to not make Soho regret his decision. Leona then talked a bit about the ingredients for her bladed weapon that she was looking for - Nightshade and Mandrake plants. Equally as dark sounding, as his ingredients. "Hmmm.." Eero hummed, as he thought about what could be done with those. "Maybe a small shroud of darkness from Nightshade? I'm not exactly sure what could be done with those." He would attempt to give Leona an idea that she could possibly develop further. "As for my ingredients, I'm looking for Death Vines and Dark Oak. I would like to make a staff that has the ability to snare and extend, if at all possible. The idea is to get the properties from the Vines and make the staff itself from the wood of the Oak, since it supposedly holds onto magical properties quite well." The boy would share the idea behind his weapon with his guildmate. He would then look at Soho. "Would you please fly up again and let us know if you spot anything that fits those descriptions of plants?" Eero would request and Soho would nod. The bird would then spread its wings and take off. He would make one circle just above the two mages and then fly up, higher, scouting ahead, as per Eero's request. The boy would then massage his right shoulder a little. It wasn't that Soho was trying to hurt him, but his talons were quite sharp and quite strong. "I think we should get going ourselves. This place gives me the creeps." He would say and look around. But which way...?

"I've got two choices. Nightshade or mandrake. I'm looking for something to be an equalizer in a fight against a lot of people." Leona said to Eero.

"If I go with nightshade like you suggested, there's a chance of making an invisibility effect. It'd be handy since I've been going on quite a few stealth-oriented jobs lately. It'd also give me an option other than barging into a camp and knocking out or killing everyone in sight." Leona spoke about the benefits of using nightshade for the magic ingredient. Being able to conceal herself at will was not a benefit to dismiss. Sometimes fighting was not the solution to a problem.

"If I use mandrake, I could go for a fear-inducing scream as its effect. It'd help in combat since I could break up mobs, but I'd have to be by myself to get any real use out of it. I'm not sure if I'd be immune to my own weapon." Leona reasoned. It was true that breaking up mobs would help her, but allies would also be affected. Besides, some people and beings were immune to fear effects. Still, she would not rule it out just yet.

"I read about an even stronger type of mandrake that could create insanity-inducing screams, but it's gone extinct. I don't know whether that was due to a natural disaster or some foresighted wizard destroying it all to keep it from being harvested. Either way, it's probably for the best that it's no longer in this world." Leona opined. There were some things that were better off not being made. A weapon that could destroy sanity with a single shriek was one of those things that should never be made.

"I'm ready to get moving when you are, Eero. We shouldn't hang around here any longer than necessary. Who knows what will turn up if we outstay our welcome." Leona readily agreed with Eero's suggestion.

It seemed that Leona was looking to create a weapon with an effect that would even the odds while fighting. She also wanted to strictly use the plants that she mentioned. Eero wasn't a skilled botanist, he wasn't sure how he could go about trying to extract the best out of the ingredients his guildmate proposed. "We will see what we can do with them back in the Guild. Who knows? Maybe you'll even discover something new." He wasn't exactly sure if what he was planning to do could be done with the ingredients he chose. It would be wild ride, that was for sure. Leona also told him about a rare plant that was basically an upgraded version of the Mandrake, but supposedly went extinct. If the effects that Leona described were true and the plant truly had them, perhaps it was for the best. Not that Eero encouraged such actions, but with such plant, who knows what could've happened if it got into the wrong hands.

After Eero suggested that the duo goes out to look for the ingredients they both desired, Leona agreed. She also noted that they shouldn't outstay their welcome, with which he could only agree, once again. Even as his guildmate finished the sentence, he could feel a gaze of someone or something on his back. He would shake his head, hoping that he was just imagining things. Leona gave him the permission to lead, so Eero just started walking forward, into the woods. He assumed that the Vines would be probably attached to something else, be it a rock or a tree or other similar objects. And as for the Oak.. He would just have to keep an eye out for a particularly dark trees. Hopefully Soho's eyes would help them out, but so far he didn't seem to find anything. The feeling of uneasiness from when Leona mentioned it only grew in Eero's mind. If he didn't do anything, then he would slowly fall into paranoia. /"There is only one item, that is reassuring enough for me."/ The boy would open his travel bag and fish out the reversed pyramid. With swift fingers he would attach it to his black choker. "I get this feeling that someone or something is watching. I hope I'm wrong." Eero would share his worries with his guildmate. He didn't know whether Leona had the same feeling. Soho didn't let him know about anything. Maybe it was just the creepy atmosphere of the place that made his mind run wild in fear.

"Yeah, we'll just have to wait for when we get back to the guild. But I hope something useful comes out of it. Something magical that can be used for a good purpose as well as powering up a weapon." Leona expressed her hope to Eero.

Suddenly Leona felt what Eero was feeling. She got the impression that she was being watched by someone or something. But who? Bandits? Bandits did not normally wait this long before making their move.

They might be dealing with smarter bandits. The mages were being allowed to go deep into the forest so that once the trap was sprung, there was little chance of escape. The bandits might be gathering just out of sight, waiting for the right moment to attack.

Or it could be a group of assassins. Leona had likely made some powerful enemies after her last few jobs. Chief among them was the Crimson Sashes, but she had to also take into account the organization of the shrouded stalker from Beanstalk Village. His organization might have received word of what had happened to him and dispatched a team of assassins to take revenge.

Or it could be just nerves. They were in Spooky Forest, after all. It was called that name for a reason. It was not called "Forest of Fun" or "Forest of Joy." To add onto the creepiness, it was oddly silent for a forest in midday.

"Something doesn't feel right. It's the middle of the day and I haven't heard a single animal make any noise. Not one. I think we're being watched, Eero." Leona seconded her guildmate's opinion. She then walked up to him. She did not want whoever was out there to hear what she had to say next.

"I suggest we stick together. Unless we absolutely have to, we don't separate. We stick together and watch each other's backs." Leona softly suggested to him. She did not like this forest. It was quiet. Too quiet. That kind of silence usually meant that trouble was nearby.

Eero wasn't sure whether he was supposed to be glad or afraid, since Leona shared his worries. He felt like it would be natural to have someone's gaze in a forest like this. But this gaze felt.. fierce and intense. Still, Leona suggested they stay together and Eero didn't see a reason not to. "Right." He would reply to Leona quietly. The boy was also starting to get a little worried about Soho. He did tell him to look for the ingredients, but he thought that he would be back by now, with or without a place for the duo mages to check out. The boy would warily walk forward, aware that the further they went into the forest, the tougher it would be for them to get back out.

Thankfully, Eero didn't have to worry about Soho for too much longer. The bird swooped down, landing on the ground in front of them, stopping them. "Soho..?" The boy would whisper and the bird in question would just hop over to Eero's left side and motion forward with his head. The boy would follow Soho's gaze, slowly turning to face the direction. On the second thought, he shouldn't have. In between the trees, there was a figure. It looked vaguely human, female. It had long stands of kelp or something equally long and disgusting in place of hair. Its skin looked like it molding and rottin with dark green hue to it. With his better vision he could make out the emptiness its eyes held, as it watched them. Or maybe it was just hunger, he couldn't tell. The boy would lightly tap Leona on her arm. "I.. I think we should keep going." Eero would whisper. The creature didn't seem hostile, at least for now. However, they were here only to gather ingredients for their weapons, not to take unneccessary fights. If the creature chose to attack, then so be it, but Eero didn't want to be the aggressor in this case.

Leona did not see what Eero saw, but she saw that he was sufficiently spooked to suggest moving on. She did not argue with him. She too felt creeped out by what was going on, or rather what was not going on. The tension was steadily growing. It was getting to be oppressive.

"I agree with you. Let's keep going." Leona seconded his opinion. But then something hit her. Where were they going? Was there any escape from the ominous presence in the area or would it simply follow them throughout the forest? Whatever it was, it would likely follow them.

"Where do you want to start looking first?" Leona asked Eero. This was her first time in Spooky Forest and she did not read a travel book or map of the area before taking the job. Eero was more likely to have done so, so she was letting him lead the way. Leona needed to start reading books on areas and bringing maps before she went to anywhere new. She needed to start acting more responsibly and start thinking ahead.

Eero would not always be around to bail her out. Leona needed to plan for that and act accordingly. As soon as they got out of this forest, she would start to change her ways. Part of her hoped that she did not wait too long to make changes. She would find out by the end of the day.

"Has Soho spotted anything yet?" Leona asked her guildmate. It was nice to have a friendly eye in the sky. Having Soho with them would help alert them to danger before it struck. At least they were hoping it would.

Eero wasn't sure if Leona saw what he did. That only made him feel more uncomfortable. He could only be imagining things. He could be, were it not for Soho who alerted him of the presence of the creature. The boy still didn't know whether it was that creature that was the source of the bad feeling, or not. He wanted to say yes to make himself feel better, but that line of thinking would probably do him no good. Thankfully, Leona agreed with Eero on the matter of keeping walking forward. Unless they got separated, they would most likely defeat whatever decided to jump on them. At least Eero thought so.

The boy wanted to keep moving, but his guildmate stopped him, asking him where they should go and if Soho had found anything yet. All of them were very valid and on point questions. Soho still didn't move, as he carefully watched the thing in the distance. "I wanted to look for spots where my ingredients are usually located, but I couldn't find anything. Just some sketches that didn't show much of anything. I'm as blind as you are." Eero was honestly relying on Soho's sight and that he would be able to guide them out when they needed to. Then again, he didn't look for a map extensively as he probably should've. Most of the time he just went with his gut feeling to guide him when he arrived at a new place, but these woods were definitely something else. The boy would look down on Soho, who was still watching. "Did you manage to find anything?" Eero would ask him quietly. The bird jumped a little and looked up at him. Soho would nod and take off. He would land on a branch of a tree that was to their left, waiting for the mages, "Well, not sure if he found an ingredient, but at least he found something of interest." Eero would explain to his guildmate and head towards Soho, as quietly as he could. He didn't want to disturb any more of the creepy forest dwellers than they already probably have. As Eero neared the tree that Soho was sitting on, the bird flew to an another tree in the same direction and landed on a branch there. "This is getting more creepy and more dangerous." The boy would voice his concerns, but they mattered little. This whole expedition was for science, wasn't it?

Eero still felt a gaze on him as he neared the second tree, he noticed why Soho was leading them that way. There would be giant rocks ahead, that had strange trees taking root around them, coiling around the rock with their exposed roots. Around and beneath those roots were many different flowers blooming and some other plants sprouting. The flowers were strangely beautiful and the boy briefly wondered as to how they could bloom in such a gloomy place. "I believe that you could find one of your ingredients or possibly both of the ingredients here?" He was sure that Soho lead them there for Leona's ingredients.

"I hope we can find my ingredients soon, Eero." Leona said. She could not stress it enough. This place was seriously creepy. The atmosphere was laden with dread like something out of a horror movie. They had better get to it... those ingredients were not going to harvest themselves.

Leona spotted a patch of purple flowers shaped like starfish growing next to the base of a tree. It was the nightshade plant that was a potential ingredient. She wondered if she could find any mandrake, but then she spotted something out of the corner of her eye. A humanoid-shaped object wearing a fancy suit... just a blink later and it was gone. It was best not to get greedy.

"I spotted an ingredient near the base of that tree. I'm going for it. Watch my back!" Leona requested before making her way to the base of the tree. She lowered herself onto her knees, put down her backpack, and pulled out a sturdy glass jar. She brought out her knife and started carefully harvesting the nightshade.

While harvesting the sixth one, she thought she saw the suit-wearing humanoid again. It was standing just behind a tree to her far left. It was leaning over with an arm on the tree like it was peering out at her. Leona blinked and it disappeared.

Leona kept at it until she harvested twelve samples. There were roughly three dozen flowers scattered around the area, so there were plenty of nightshade flowers left. She stood up and was about to turn around when she spotted multiple small holes in the earth just north of her position. Leona decided to take a risk and investigate. A closer look showed that two dozen of something had been dug up... chances were it was the mandrake she wanted.

Leona was about to go deeper when she spotted the humanoid again. It was in the far right of her vision. This time it had an arm up like it was waving at her. One blink and it was gone. The hair on the back of Leona's neck stood up... the blonde should quit while she was ahead.

Leona turned around, walked back to the nightshade patch, and stood near her jar. She then washed her hands off with some water she kept in her backpack and liberally applied hand sanitizer. It was not soap and water, but it would do until she could return to the guild hall.

"I think all the mandrake plants were harvested, but I can't prove it and I don't wanna stick around to investigate. At least I got plenty of samples of nightshade to work with. A dozen flowers should do it. When you're ready, let's go get what you need." Leona suggested to Eero while putting the sample jar away in her backpack. She was glad that she had taken only the nightshade. Something told her that she would have regretted investigating the patches of dirt where some plants had been.

The two mages came closer to the area that got revealed to them by Soho. According to Leona, the flowers that were blooming just mere steps ahead of them, were the ingredient that she was looking for. She asked him to look after her back, while she gathered the plants. "Got it." Eero would nod, standing so that his back was to Leona's. He was looking out for the creature that he had seen before and any other terrors that could be lurking around. The boy wasn't sure if he would be any good in combat like this but- on the second, he knew he would. The ever increasing level of fear made his other self tug on his mind. /"That's the last thing I need."/ Eero's other self would probably just run amok among the enemies, if any showed up. Soho too, was keeping a watchful eye over Leona. He didn't let out any screeches, so the coast must've been clear. While Eero was mostly looking out for the thing that he saw, he knew that there were many more that had their eyes on them. And he hoped that it would just stay at only looking.

It didn't take Leona too long to collect what she needed. According to her, the Mandrakes were already gone, harvested by someone else. Eero thought that that was quite strange. Was there somebody else there before them? Or perhaps one of the natives of this forest liked them as snacks? He felt like he would never get answers for those questions. His guildmate was ready for the next step of their trip - Eero's ingredients. The Death Vines and wood from the Dark Oak. The boy would wave at Soho, again. The bird landed on his shoulder, ready to listen. "What about those Vines and Oak? Did you find those?" The boy would ask and Soho would lead, by flying onto a branch of an another tree. And yet again, it only led deeper into the woods. The boy would groan and reluctantly follow his bird companion.

At least they didn't go too much deeper. Soon enough they were upon a large and majestic tree, that was being encroached on by other plants. It looked like they all wanted a piece of its dark glory. Eero wasn't sure if it was the Dark Oak that he was looking for, but this wood would have to do. He didn't want to be in this forest any longer than he absolutely needed to. "Watch my back, I'll see what I can do." The boy would say to his guildmate and approached the tree. Upon closer inspection, among the plants scattered around, he noticed one in particular. It tried really hard to cling onto the tree's bark. It was a vine, that had an eerie, faint teal glow to it. Both of the things he needed. Perfect. The boy would carefully approach the vines. It seemed fragile enough so that Eero could tear off a couple of samples. However, when he attempted to touch the vine, it instantly sprung back at him. As if it was communicating with the rest of its parts, a number of other vines grabbed onto his arms and right leg. At first Eero thought that it was great to see the vine extension first-hand, but once they caught hold of him, the excitement was very quickly replaced by fear, that he couldn't control and could feel himself slip away. Eero's features would turn slightly sharper and the look of fear was replaced by look of anger and annoyance. "Let go of me, you damn plant!" He would struggle, not caring about the loudness of his now deeper voice.

Leona watched Eero go towards a tree with a strange vine on it. The vine had a teal glow and was obviously different from a garden variety vine. She let Eero do his thing in peace. She wondered what happened to the mandrake and who that mysterious humanoid was. She also wondered why the humanoid bothered wearing a suit in a forest.

Her random thoughts were broken by sounds of distress originating from Eero's direction. She turned to look and found him ensnared by the very vines he was trying to collect. His arms and right leg were wrapped by the vines. He was clearly in distress and needed help. That was Leona's cue to go to his aid.

"I'm on the way, Eero!" Leona shouted to her guildmate. She drew her knife and slowly closed in on him. She had to free his hands first. But how? They were deeply tangled and she did not want to cut him.

She also did not want to get trapped herself. She had another idea. Maybe she could use her spells to help him. Lion Claw and Crescent Cutter should do the trick. If they did not cut the vine outright, they should cut through it enough to weaken it.

On second thought, maybe not. The knife would be better. She did not know if the vine could absorb magic to empower itself or not. There was little time to waste. She quickly approached and began sawing at the vine wrapped around Eero's left wrist.

It slowly started to give way, but the tree was not going to let Eero go so easily. It seemed to take offense to her efforts to free him and acted like it was going to come after her. She had to work quickly.

Leona moved onto his right wrist and began to cut the vine binding it. It too gave way, but Leona was noticing a stronger defensive reaction from the tree. Now a couple of vines were moving. They were going to come after her soon. Leona had just started work on freeing Eero's leg when she felt vines probing her legs.

Leona screamed and ran away just before they grabbed her. She kept hold of her knife but had left Eero behind. She had to get back to him, but how? If both of them got caught, it would be game over. She had to back off and think.

"Sorry, Eero! I can't get any closer right now!" Leona called out. The vines were in a position that made using Crescent Cutter difficult. She could use it, but the spell ran the risk of hitting Eero and defeating the point of a rescue. She would just have to find another way to help him. Was there a clue on the tree the vine was attached to?

Eero growled and struggled against the vines, as his guildmate rushed to the rescue. Leona used her knife in an attempt to sever the vines and free him. She managed to cut through the vines that had his arms bound, but couldn't free his leg, as the vines switched their target, going for Leona, instead of him. "Don't you dare touch me." Eero would growl. Now that his hands were free and the vines were preoccupied by another prey, he could properly retaliate. Eero would gather acid in his body and cover his right forearm with it. Toxic Lash. For the next bit of time he would have his forearm laced with dripping acid. Swiftly, Eero would grab hold of the vine that was still restraining his right leg. Once the acid met plant material, the vine let go and Eero just squeezed to burn through the vine with a hiss.

With his left hand, the boy would pick up the part that was wrapped around his leg previously. "You will make a great addition to my arsenal." He would say with a dark smirk and reach for a vine that was trying to grab hold of Leona. With an another hiss of the plant, it retracted and soon the rest of the vines followed. He would stuff the piece of vine into his bag. "Now for the.. oak, or whatever he needed." Eero would say and approach the majestic tree. The vines no longer threatened him, or his guildmate. He wasn't sure if he would be able to snap off a branch or find one laying about. In any case, he could always rely on his poison to get him what he needed. Eero would quickly scan the immediate area around the base of the tree, but couldn't see any branches that llooked worthwhile. With a groan, he would once more gather acid in his body and let it seep out of his hands. Skillfully, he would shape it into a sizeable bow, the Deathgarden. Eero already had an eye for a suitable branch. He would take aim and shoot an arrow of acid that cut through the branch. It would fall down with a loud tonk. The bow dissolved in Eero's hands and he walked over to his bounty. Luckily, the branch was in fine condition and intact. "Hopefully this is the one he wants. Can't be bothered to look for anything else." He would growl and pick up the branch. The wood was dark and it had some sort of strange veins flowing through it on the inside. "That's all for me. You need anything else, or can we get out of this armpit of a place?" Eero would ask to his guildmate as he neared her.

Leona felt upset about leaving Eero trapped in the final vine, but she need not have worried. Eero managed to free himself in a spectacular display of his magic, which appeared to be poison and acid-based. At least she helped him enough that he could free himself. He also managed to collect the ingredients that he needed. That was a welcome relief... it would have been a serious downer to go through all that trouble for him to walk away with nothing to show for it.

"I think we should get out while the going's good, Eero. I keep seeing a humanoid being in the area, but it disappears when I blink. I know it sounds dumb, but I don't like the look of it. it's like it wants us to travel deeper into the woods." Leona gave her opinion. It felt like whatever was stalking her was trying to use her curiosity against her. As much as she wanted to explore the forest to look for mandrake, something told her to quit now, quit and get out before it was too late. Leona would heed that warning. She would only go deeper into the forest if her guildmate wanted to.

"No ingredient is worth our lives. If we go deeper into the forest and get into trouble again, there's no guarantee that I'll be able to save us a second time. If both of us get caught in a trap, it's curtains for us." Leona added. She had no right to risk Eero's life against his will. She also did not want to risk her own life unless there was a need to. There was no urgently needed item here or any bandit king to fight. It was time to go.

"We might be able to find some magical ingredients on the way back to the guild hall. They might not be as strong as what we can find here, but they'll likely be a lot safer to harvest. We'll also be in familiar territory. I say we quit while we're ahead." Leona suggested. She had had enough of Spooky Forest for one adventure. They could not leave the forest soon enough.

Leona agreed with the idea of getting out. Great. When she told him about the strange creature that she had been seeing, he wasn't surprised. There was a lot of unknown in this forest and a lot of this unknown was bound to be bad or dangerous. Though she did have a point with them both getting trapped. Most of the spells that he had at his disposal were quite wide, so he would be putting Leona into danger. /"Eero wouldn't like that, would he?"/ Eero scoffed in his head. Who needed friends, when you could just murder everyone? "Let's get back." He would say and wave to see, if Soho was nearby. The bird swooped closer a few moments later. "Hey bird, get us out of here." Eero would say, roughly. Soho was confused for a moment, tilting his head. He didn't remember his saviour being harsh as he was now, but decided to obey. Soho would fly up on a tree's branch in the direction they came from, waiting for the mages to follow his lead.

Eero could feel himself waking up and as soon as he realised what had transpired before he blacked out, he knew that bad things must've taken place. Once more, he was nothing but a detached spirit or sorts, who wanted his body back. Ahead, he saw himself walking, with a branch that seemed to have been singed off of a tree, Leona and Soho. His other self felt him awaken and he stopped dead in his tracks, turning around to face him. "You done napping, princess?" He would ask him with amusement in his voice. "I had to do all of your damn gathering while you were too busy pissing your pants." Eero clenched his teeth. He did get overwhelmed by fear, when those vines grabbed him, which meant that he should get used to situations like that, so that this wouldn't happen again. "Thanks, that's great and all, but-" "But what? You want your body back? Sure, go ahead. You're the big boy who needs help with everything he does." The words stung, because there was truth to them. But before he could feebly retaliate, he was back in his body again. His right arm suddenly felt incredibly heavy and he almost fell over. /"Oh, the branch.."/ He almost forgot and lifted it up. With a groan, Eero would turn to his guildmate. "I'm sorry for what just happened. He didn't do anything.. bad, did he?" He would ask her, voice just above a whisper. His voice was higher pitched and features were smooth once more - back to normal. Eero needed to confirm that nothing serious had happened in his absence. He did feel a tiny bit of magic in him missing, which meant that something had definitely happened, which required his other self to use the poison.

To say that Leona was surprised at what had just happened an understatement. The only way she could have been any more surprised was if that humanoid in the suit had appeared in front of her and offered to take her on a date. Eero had just behaved... oddly. From what little she understood, he had his normal voice and a deeper one. The deeper one relentlessly criticized the normal one for always needing the former's help to complete any important undertaking.

But what had happened was more than a change of voice. It seemed like Eero was playing host to two drastically different personalities. One was normal Eero. The other was more confident and more critical. The second Eero had a tongue that could have cut the vines earlier.

"No, Eero. It's OK. The other you didn't do anything bad." Leona replied to him.

"Nothing bad. I just didn't expect that. I didn't expect any of that." Leona repeated herself. She made no secret of being more than a little perturbed. She did not know that her guildmate had such depths, if depths was the right word to use. Leona made an effort to relax a little. She did not want to drive Eero away by looking afraid of his other side.

She should begin shoring up his confidence. Eero probably needed it after being chastised by himself. Well, a darker and more sarcastic self.

"Don't let what the other you said get to you, Eero. If you were as afraid as he said you were, you wouldn't have ever traveled to a place like Spooky Forest for ingredients. Mages a lot stronger than we are try to avoid traveling in here by themselves. You didn't avoid it... you came out here like you owned the place. So don't listen to that other you." Leona attempted to console Eero. She had heard of people having critical voices in their heads. As far as she knew, Eero was the only person whose critical voice could take over his body at any time it chose.

Eero couldn't tell whether his guildmate was genuinely surprised, or genuinely scared of his sudden polarity. He didn't mean for his other self to break through. He didn't want anyone to know. At least until he felt comfortable talking about it. Leona tried to boost his courage, to lift up his spirits a bit. He knew better, though. "Maybe so. But I most likely would've gotten strangled to death if you weren't here. He's always right and I can't do anything about it." Eero would say with a sad smile. Even that last time he got out, when Zephyr knocked the artifact over the balcony's railing, he knew that what his other self said was right.

The boy would wave at Soho, who warily flew over, but didn't sit on Eero's shoulder. "I'm sorry about that, Soho. I hope that you will still stay despite what just happened." The bird would tilt its head, deciding what to do. But ultimately nodded and flew back up at the tree. Eero's heart jumped a little. He was glad that Soho didn't abandon him. He was also pretty sure that his other self did or said something to Soho, which made him worry. But his bird companion had the right idea - they still needed to get out of the forest. But some things had to be done first. "I know that we really should get going, but.." The boy would turn to Leona. "I would like to ask you that you keep what you just witnessed to yourself. I know it's selfish of me to ask, but it's not a topic I'm comfortable talking about, quite yet." It was his own fault for what happened, so he was in no position to ask that of his guildmate. But it was something that he didn't want to spread around. Maybe one day he could get rid of his other self. Or perhaps make amends with him. Eero wasn't sure what his other self really wanted, though.

Leona listened to Eero lament about how his other self was right. According to Eero, he could not do anything without Other Eero's help. "Other Eero" was Leona's unofficial nickname for her guildmate's other side. They shared the same body but had vastly different personalities. It was both intriguing and frightening.

She listened as he requested that she keep news of his other persona quiet. That was a reasonable request to make. Other members of Silver Wolf might not be as accepting as Leona. She wondered if Poko knew about this. Chances were high that the Guild Master knew about the matter long before Leona did.

"I'll keep it strictly between us, Eero. No one else has to know. Not until you're ready." Leona assured him. She liked Eero. He was a faithful companion and was a lot braver than she was when it came to heights. He also did not judge her for being less adept at research than he was. She would keep his secret for as long as he wanted.

"I'm ready to go whenever you are." Leona said to him. Other Eero was bold and decisive, but he was verbally abusive to Original Eero. Leona did not like that. She had a feeling that the two would clash some day. Whether it was with words or with magic, Other Eero and Leona would come into conflict.

The boy was glad to hear that Leona agreed to keep his other self a secret. He really didn't want to go into any details. Mostly because Eero himself didn't know who or what exactly his other self was. He just knew that he was there from the beginning. Since he woke up in that inn, couple of years ago, at least. The boy would give Leona a small bow. "Thank you. You don't know how much that means to me." He would thank his guildmate. Eero needed at least some light in his life as of very recently and this promise made him feel better.

When Leona said that they could leave whenever, he knew that they had to get going. Eero already felt that they have long overstayed their welcome. It was surprising that they still didn't get jumped while all of that was happening. "Yeah, we should get going, before we get jumped, or maybe worse." The boy would say and motion for Soho to lead them out of the forest, so that the mage duo could travel back to the Guild grounds. The trip through the forest was uneventful for Eero, but he felt uneasy and uncomfortable, walking between the trees. They were lucky to have an extra set of eyes to guide them out of the woods. Soho did a great job during the whole trip and Eero felt like that he and Leona would be utterly lost, trying to find their respective ingredients and then trying to get out. The boy just hoped that his other self didn't mess with Soho.

"All right! Let's go then!" Leona declared. They could not get out of here soon enough. Leona gladly led the way out with Eero following close behind and Soho flying overhead.

-Silver Wolf Guild Hall, several hours later-

"We made it, Eero." Leona said to him after closing the wooden doors behind them. Now they were in the clear. No more creepy things in suits stalking them. No more vines trying to murder them. They had their ingredients... well, Eero had both of his.

Leona was unable to find a satisfactory second ingredient for her weapon. Maybe the guild storage room would have something she could use. It did not have to be mandrake. It could be almost any plant-based ingredient. She thought of getting a vine like Eero's, but after what happened to him she decided to quit while she was ahead and seek ingredients in a safer location.

"I couldn't find any second magic ingredients along the way. I'm gonna have to check guild storage rooms to see what I can find. Maybe I can use something from in there." Leona stated to her guildmate. She was not going back to Spooky Forest today. She would hit up alchemist shops if she had to. She would even pay a visit to Margaret the Herbalist in Beanstalk Village if it became necessary. Margaret might have duplicates of something she could spare, or failing that, point Leona towards someone who did.

"Well, I'll sort it out. I'm just glad you got what you needed and got out alive." Leona said to Eero.

It took them several hours to get back to the Guild. When they entered the hall, Eero wasn't sure whether he was shivering from the cold or the experience he had endured very recently. Leona closed the wooden doors after them and Eero, too, was glad that they made it back in one piece. When she said that she would check out the storage for some other ingredients, the boy nodded. Technically he had both the vine and the wood, but he didn't know if they would work together, or if those were the ingredients that he was looking for in the first place. "I'm glad that you didn't get hurt either." Eero would say to his guildmate. He would feel terrible if something happened to Leona, just because he let his other self take over. The boy would briefly look around, trying to spot Soho, though it seemed that his bird companion stayed outside to hunt for food. As soon as Eero thought of food, his stomach growled. But as much as he wanted to eat, it would be better if he went to the lab section of the Guild. If he went to eat, he would just succumb to his own tiredness and most likely pass out cold on a table.

Eero would turn back to Leona. "I'll go to the lab section. I'll have to pick up some tools and then I will move to the forge. I'm not sure if what I have in mind will work, but I hope it will." He would present his plan for the immediate future. "But if you won't find an another ingredient, I can always give you some of the vine. Since it seems like my other self just burned off quite the chunk." Eero would also offer potential help to his guildmate as he tugged upwards on his travel bag. It was definitely a bit too heavy to just have a small piece of the vine inside. His other self definitely didn't play with the branch Eero held, if he were to judge by one of the singed ends.

Leona listened to Eero for a moment as he spoke to her. He offered to give Leona part of the vine he had harvested during their adventure. Leona paused to think about it. That was an offer she might actually take him up on.

"I might actually take you up on that offer, Eero. I'm not sure that the guild has any ingredients on hand. I'll go ask a staff member before I give up, though." Leona said to him. An older, bespectacled staff member passing by walked up to her and began speaking. What he said was not good.

"I'm sorry, dear. We don't have very many magical ingredients yet. Unfortunately, we must save what we do have in stock. I'm sorry I couldn't bring any good news." The older man politely informed her. Leona was momentarily disappointed. But she would adapt like she always did. She would go out and find something if she had to. Or she could take up Eero on his generous offer.

"It's no problem. I'll handle it. Thanks." Leona said to him before the older man walked away. she turned back to Eero. Earlier she had rescued him from almost certain death. Now he was saving her bacon. Part of her still disliked asking for him to split the vine that he had worked so hard to get.

"I'll follow you shortly, Eero. I need to set my pack in my room and get the nightshade. Then I need to grab some tools and an instruction book on working the forge. I've never used a forge before. My older brother is a blacksmith's apprentice back home, but that won't do me any good here." Leona addressed Eero. Like with her mother the scribe, having a professional as a family member did not translate to Leona having their skills. She had been around a forge, but she had never actually worked one. Now she was going to use one to make her very own magical weapon. The next several hours would be both exciting and dangerous.

Now to address the biggest issue of all... what her second ingredient would be. There was no getting around it. She needed his help.

"Eero, would you mind sharing half of the vine with me?" Leona asked him.

It seemed that Leona was thinking about taking up Eero on his offer, but she still wanted to confirm with the Guild's supply storage about the ingredients. There was an another member of the Guild passing by and Leona stopped them to ask. However, it seemed that the answer was not a positive one. His guildmate shared her intentions about how she would proceed. The boy would nod in response. He was about to go downstairs to fetch items from the lab, but Leona's question stopped him. "Of course I will share. I'll just get some items from the lab and then I will go to the forge." He would agree to share the vine. It was the least he could do for her, for saving his life and enduring his other self. "Also, let me know if you need help with your weapon, alright? I don't know much about blacksmithing, but if you would need to help hold something or so, let me know." Eero would offer, since he didn't know if smithing a machete was a one man job. The boy would wave a temporary bye to his guildmate and head downstairs.

There were a few items that he would need for his idea. And now it had to work, since he would be parting with a solid bit of the vine, so no mistakes were allowed. He wasn't going back to the Spooky Forest, not for a long time, at least. He had quite the fill of the place to last a while. Eero felt his clothes being gross and his body felt similarly. "I need a shower.." The boy would mumble, as he set down the branch and his travel bag on the floor near the door to the lab. However, as much as he wanted a shower, again, his tiredness would just empower him and take advantage. He had to endure for just a little while longer. The boy stepped inside the lab, hoping that he wasn't doing to put dirt on too many things. He immediatelly started looking for his desired items. A pestle and mortar wasn't too tough to find. Eero chose a slightly bigger one, made of stone. He spotted a metal one aswell, but he figured that the stone one would be better. Next, he needed a precise knife, or just something that he could cut the vine with. He found a suitable enough of a knife after rummaging through some drawers. The boy nodded to himself. For the last thing, he needed some distilled water. Or any other water, except for regular water. Eero thought that distilled water would do well for what he had in mind, which was basically dunking the branch into a liquid infused with the vine, so that it would gain the vine's abilies, albeit weaker, most likely.

The one thing he didn't have, though, was a regular knife, or a knife that he could use to shape the branch into a proper bo staff. Perhaps he could ask Leona about that one, or just find something at the forge. He also wanted to go to forge for this process because he was more likely to find a container that would fit his future staff. Eero sighed and with his desired items, bag and the branch he set out upstairs for the forge. There was still be plenty of work to do, the weapons were still a while away from completion.

Leona felt guilty for even asking for Eero to share a piece of his vine. She had just ensured that he had no spare vine. If he made a mistake, he would have to live with the results since he did not have any spare material. She now intensely regretted asking for it. There was nothing that could be done now except make sure she got it right the first time.

"I appreciate this, Eero. If you need any more vine, I'll go back and get it myself if I have to." Leona said to Eero while clutching the section of vine he had gifted to her. She was not going to insult his generosity by handing it back. She would use it and make her weapon. But she would return the favor one day. She would repay his generosity somehow.

Speaking of the weapon, Leona needed to think of what she wanted out of it before she started forging it. Should she go for the partial invisibility? Should it be poisoned for damage over time and other effects? Or should she follow Eero's example and trade raw striking power for utility? The possibilities were numerous.

A machete tended to be a short-ranged weapon. Perhaps she could benefit from extending its reach somehow. She was not sure if "extending its reach" meant allowing her to grapple onto objects or extend the reach of its blade. Either one was a viable option. There was something to be said for being able to reach new vantage points during battle.

There was also something to be said for being able to extend one's reach during battle. She could use a rapidly extending blade to take opponents by surprise with a sudden stab or slash that had a longer reach than they had anticipated. Which one was the better option? For once the blonde had good options to choose from. That was something that did not happen too often.

In light of this exciting new choice, poison lost a lot of its appeal. If an enemy managed to take her weapon, an extending blade would be less dangerous than poison. That was an important consideration to keep in mind. She was fairly certain Eero thought the same way. That was one reason why he did not go for an obviously dangerous weapon like a sword or mace.

"I'm gonna go get ready, Eero. See you then!" Leona said to him before taking her leave. She got a shower, changed her clothes, and borrowed a well-worn book on magical properties and a bookstand. Now she was wearing an olive green t-shirt and khaki cargo shorts with boots and Argent Gloves. It was not the safest outfit to wear around a forge, but she was sure that she could borrow a thick blacksmith's apron to wear. She left her pack in her room... she would not need it inside the guild hall.

Now to gather the materials. Leona took her dozen nightshade flowers, the length of vine, and some distilled water. She carried them to an empty workstation and laid them out. She placed the book on the bookstand she had brought in. She tied on the blacksmith's apron.

Leona had all the materials she required, but what she needed now was an idea. What would she commit to? The ability to grapple onto objects? Or the ability to extend the blade's length at will? She began reading the book of magical properties to help her reach a decision.

A staff member helped her by preparing the forge for use. Leona was ready to do this. She was ready to take a step towards gaining new skills that could be useful in the future.
