    ☪ Slayer Beginnings ☪

One could theorize that meeting, or even managing to catch sight of an extremely rare magical being is based solely on pure, unadulterated luck. Others would perhaps claim that it is the hand of destiny that guides people to encounter the largely feared and unknown beings of power. In all likelihood, it was a combination of both of those factors; with a varying ratio depending on the person in question of course. Maybe that’s what it was in the case of this bat-like individual as well…

In his younger years, Balthazar used to be a rather untamed individual, always causing trouble and rebelling against the people of the demonic clan he was part of; his parents and any close relatives included. The purple colored bat was not like them, and he was painfully aware of that fact. With everyone around him striving for kindness, acceptance and just the overall idea of maintaining harmony with everyone and everything at all costs, he who had a strong inclination towards resisting authority and taking matters into his own hands in spite of potential negative consequences it could end up causing simply stuck out like a sore thumb. Had he wanted to, he could have bowed down and played along with the rest to assure himself a good position in life, yet he never did. Being a beamy, helpful person no matter what left a bitter taste in his mouth; one he never managed to stomach. On top of that, by a certain point in time, the others had grown to resent him already, being the insufferable troublemaker he was, and he had single-mindedly decided that trying to kiss ass wouldn’t be worth it even if he could bring himself to pretend he was suddenly a different person.

All those issues and offenses kept building up until he one day made the ultimate choice to leave. For all he knew, it was better than staying in that rotten hell of a place which only ate away at his mind and energy. With all that said and done, Balthazar had gone on to become a sort of a rogue traveler, moving from one place to another as he pleased. Through using his fiery and confident fighting spirit, he made his way around; often found in dark and corruption riddled places in search of rare object and the like to use as a collateral for staying over at an inn here and there. An odd sort of life overall, that had lasted him a couple years before the fateful incident finally happened. Having been wandering through a sullen forest; that which many dubbed as the forest of nightmares due to the weird and crazy rumors about it spreading like hellfire, he had managed to sneak as well as battle his way through the fairly dense amount of wild creatures living there and find himself in the depths of the tree fortress.

The wind howled around freely, soon forcing the bat-like man to stop in his tracks as he realized he wasn’t alone once again, having noticed odd sparks of heat travelling across the rushing air. “I know someone’s here…show your face, would you!?”, he’d call out into the vast array of nature around him, luckily enough soon receiving a response in the form of an amused deep voice carrying itself on the surrounding breeze. “How brave of you to challenge that which you know nothing of, dear stranger.” Balthazar would scoff lightly in return as the voice chuckled at him, putting his arms on his hips. “Yeah, well I’m not afraid of a fight. I’ve won plenty so far.” Like hell he was going to simply bow down and give into the demands of someone trying to mock him. His answer seemed to have amused the being in question further, a burst of dark flames dancing across the area around him for a brief amount of time as it came together and formed into a fiery humanoid figure with four large, feathery wings on its back. “You stand before a being of holy flames; Rhagnarig my name is. Are you certain you wish to battle still?”, the now identified ‘opponent’ would smirk faintly at the man it was facing. Now that this new information was revealed, Balthazar would indeed frown slightly, this being a notch beyond what he would have normally expected. Usually, he fought more common beasts, and as much as he hated to admit it, his knowledge of rare beings like this one appeared to be was quite limited. He never gave it much thought, being busy chasing what was currently available rather than immerse himself in stories and fairytales. Perhaps it was his lack of awareness that led him to not be too afraid in the situation, though that was something one would never know unless they coaxed him to tell them the truth of the matter. Cocking his head to the side, he would grin back. “Sure, bring it on!" …and then, the flame God would simply laugh, shaking its head in merriment. “I like your confidence, little creature. You’ve given me much needed amusement for the day, so I shall offer you a chance to prove you’ve got what it takes to back those words up. A bet, so to speak. If you can manage to learn how to use the power I wield, I shall acknowledge you as worthy of being an opponent. What do you say, little one?” A strange and unexpected ‘offer’ indeed, which made Balthazar raise an eyebrow in skeptical scrutiny at first, internally debating how much of a good idea accepting such an odd request of sorts would be. Hell, he had gone this far without backing off though, and he certainly didn’t feel like turning into a sissy coward now, therefore after the much needed moment of contemplation, he’d make the decision to stand his ground. Power was something he was always game for after all. Gain some of that, and show this creature he could do shit; perfect way to kill two birds with one stone, wasn’t it…?

“Fine by me. You shall see just what I’m made of!”

With those words, the contract had been sealed, and Balthazar would come to spend numerous days, weeks, even months at the forest, doing his absolute best to get the hang of the powers of dark burning flame which Rhagnarig oh so ruthlessly proceeded to teach him. The task proved to not be a doozy at all, and there sure have been moments where the demonic bat almost regretted the choice he had made in the heat of the moment; especially as he stared down at the burns covering his hands, and various other areas of his body. The ability to harness these flames in one’s body, and control their flow precisely enough to make timed strikes at an opponent was not an easy one to attain. Many painful days were spent with him making near futile attempts to harness the fire in controlled layers on top of his skin, use it to make desired shapes and direct its power to wherever was necessary. A long journey by all means, but as many would say, one with a satisfying reward. It would take a long time, but he would eventually get the hang of it, being able to take down the wild creatures of the forest efficiently, and without burning himself or the area around; not leaving behind devastated lands and evidence for more enemies to track him any longer. The harsh training paid off so to speak, and at that point also came the day where the student and master would finally part. Not without a typical promise being given, however. “One day, once I’ve made my mark on the world, I’ll come back and actually defeat you. You can bet on that, you big fire man!” It would seem that the flames only added to his natural confidence, but the flame God took it in good spirits, waving the man off with a sassy acceptance of the words.

Wait the holy being shall, while the ambitious bat demon travels further, using his newfound expertise to get a bit of a name for himself, as well as to carry out tasks which would assure he’d never find himself in an aimless bind he had endured in his youth. Joining a desirable guild to get more means to train his powers towards higher levels would only be the start of the long path awaiting ahead…
