The evenings rays of sunlight hit across the forest floor in intricate patterns, finding their way through the quilted treetops above. A breeze howls through the trees, sounding eerily like a low moan or cry.
Slowly, warily, attentively Markus scouted the area. Turning his head, he scanned the horizon for for monsters, enemies, and other possible dangers. Not that it was likely; he had a nature inclination to subtlety, after all the shadows hugged his body, hiding him from view.
After finding no threat, he looked for friends and allies.
Turing his whole body he examined the tall brush, the trees, and the area around him. He felt the itch of the cold, half-dead leaves brushing his neck. Repressing a shiver, he smiles to himself and looks at his companion.
Next to Markus sat a large black wolf, her fur as dark as night, her eyes glowing like a red harvest moon. She was watching the surrounding area, just an intently as Markus just did, her eyes acting as a second set of protection.
The two were on a job, the fine citizens within the town nearby had requested aid from the wizards guilds. Their town has been ravaged by creatures, unknown forms in the night sneaking in under the moon, killing livestock, and then disappearing, without a trace.
Markus had decided to spend the night within the forest, or more honestly the day within the village so that he could watch throughout the night. Markus was nocturnal by nature, his magic and the power it gives him worked best within the dark, and proved to be unreliable within the light.
Markus looked down, at his feet was a pond. Markus could not believe how much he had changed over the years, the scared sad boy he once saw in the mirror was but a stranger. The face looking back at him had long dark red hair, growing long enough to cover his ears and eyes. He had a small scar on his cheek, he was unsure when he got it, he had many such scars on his body. The eyes looking back were weary, tired, heavy, yet alert and resolute, they were they eyes of a man who had looked into darkness and been the first one to blink. The eyes of a man who swore it would never happen again.
Markus was woken from his musing, all of a sudden there was movement in the trees around him...
It was time.
