    Public New Company [Calathes' Introduction]

Post by Ahote 1st March 2018, 6:27 pm

A cold and harsh wind rushed over the white and silent wasteland, where only stone buildings, quiet critters, and few persistent greens lay. The atmosphere had been overcast with dark and grey clouds, only fragments of sunshine and moonlight digging past the fluffy thickness. But these gloomy, sunless skies were far too familiar to Ahote, who had treated such a lifeless mass like home, and yet greeted no familiar person nor feature with warmth.

Ahote made way up the mountain, boots sinking into the fresh layer of glistening wet snow and ambled onward, footprints destined to be masked by new layers of snow in only a few hours, as Mt. Hakobe had been known for its frequent snow showers. But a mountain was a mountain, and trips up and down the landscape seemed like a hike to others, and came with it the strain of one. But Ahote had adapted, and treated it like streets from one area to another, streets he wished not to know so well. Everything was dreadfully gloomy and nothing ever seemed to changed. But this day, of all days, had proven different from the rest, for he had with him a friend. Theo Calathes.

Up the mountain he and Theo hiked, and soon the two pairs of colorful and almond-like eyes would behold the massive, stone fortress that would lie in silence on the peak of Mt. Hakobe and would reflect all ice that covered it and all the dread contained within. Yes, his home, the Basilisk Fang's fortress.

Hastily, with a face reddened from the chilly winds, Ahote made way to the large gates that kept them beyond the fortress, groped about his pants pockets, and quietly pushed it open after the click of a key twisting in its large keyholes. He turned to face Theo with a scrunched countenance, as if the thought and uncertainty he held deep within weighed on his expression, "Lets go, we'll freeze if we stay put any longer." Ahote jeered, leisurely slipping into the grounds beyond the gates, through the doors, and into the structure.

The raven haired youth stepped into the dark, cold space with the unusual warmth of a fire in the nearby tavern. He leaned back with a chest full of air before jerking forward with a large, heavy breath, sucking in the cold air like a long, satisfying drink. He raised his feet to his raise, where metal and fleshy fingers would greet them foot-by-foot, slipping his boots off and flicking them to the side followed by the unzipping of his thick woolen jacket, but not taking it off.

Ahote lumbered deeper into the dim space ahead, unsure of whether to move forward or to welcome his companion to his home. He found himself quite flustered between proper etiquette when inviting others over, as he never had anyone to invite, and the people who would come inside like such came for very different reasons. His cherry flushed nose twitched and body twisted to face Theo, "So. . . this is my home." he began awkwardly, uncertain of what he should sound like. It was, after all, the most normal introduction of his home he's ever done. Still, his wet eyes twinkled with a restlessness he had never experienced before, that akin to excitement, and was eager to fulfill his word of preparing good food for the man.

    There was absolutely nothing.
Like the barren wasteland, the blanket of white consumed all sound.
It discarded a feeling of loneliness— a gloom which was consistent.

Despite the clutter of barely poised buildings, the civilization which seemed visible by structure gave no such sign of being there. Not in body or by chatter— it gave off abandonment in comparison to the town they had left after the comfortable ride. What warmth cascaded down in the light of day gradually disappeared through the sharp cliff-sides and ever rising mountains. The climate had dropped considerably, every breath enfolded upon the cool air, every current of wind nipped the visible layer of flesh. Ahote had seemed rather prepared for the hike. He couldn’t be complaining when the shift in weather didn’t necessarily affect him, as it would the youth. However—  it was still something that every nerve shuddered and convulsed in the sharpness of the sudden winter.

A single hand rubbed the left of the forearm, hoping to conduct some heat upon the swift movement. It didn’t manage for more than a second. He was beginning to think the journey was either a test of his patience or what figure he’d been following was lost. There hadn’t been a single note of hesitation so pressing on the latter didn’t seem the right choice. Embarking further away from the waste, further up the slope and further into the constant shade of grey and white— there came a striking feature in the distance. For once Theo was relieved.

It was what could be akin to a castle. How far it raised in the many towers, how sturdy it seemed built mostly of stone and some by wood. Still it gave off the impression of being deserted, and for a moment he wondered if the youth lived here all by himself. That was a troublesome thought although— not everything was as it seemed—  as some would have liked to say.

With the nip of the outside no longer bothering him within the shelter, he crept closer to the warmth of a fire. He required the light it birthed into the still mostly shadowy opening— still it was hardly enough. Then again it wasn’t like he’d been deprived of it. Unfortunately Theo was unfamiliar with manners and decided to loiter with his shoes still on, hardly paying attention to the other till he’d decided to speak once again. “...You live here by yourself?” with a query, there was a comment which followed shortly after. ”It’s cold and damp— and forgotten.” seemingly slow on the last few words, there appeared in idea in his voice. A wonder if those that had previous thrown flame in their direction could ever find them here. There was a possibility, but even then the condition was so gruesome in comparison to the forest. Would they have ever thought to look here? In such a lightless location? The golden pools reflected against the flicker of fire which danced on the pile of wood. All these ideas were settling, yet the doubts still remained.

Ahote wasn't surprised at his companion's response, as the fortress was far too dark and glum for anyone to think that people lived here. But it wasn't a choice he or anyone else had, having been a criminal guild. They didn't have much of a choice but to hide atop an icy mountain that almost seemed inhabitable. Far too often, there were times he thought of living elsewhere. Where the air was warmer and the atmosphere wasn't always overcast with storm clouds. Where he may bask in the sun and indulge in the plip-plopping of raindrops against stone pavement and glass windows. But here, the air was dusty, there was little light, and it always seemed chilly no matter how many fires were lit. It was a miserable lifestyle the boy had, sadly, gotten accustomed to.

Ahote's lips would quirk into a smile, turning to face Theo with warm hues, "I might as well be. No one's ever around, so. . . you know." he shrugged weakly, rubbing the nape of his neck awkwardly, "Anyway, aren't you hungry? Come on, the tavern's this way." Ahote would quickly saunter deeper into dark space until the pair would arrive at a large, old door. With the twist of the knob, he pulled it open and entered the empty tavern, where clean tables and an idle, cackling fire would await them.

If not his room, the raven haired youth spent most of his time in this area, where the food and fireplace were. It was perhaps the most comfortable space besides the dorms, or at least Ahote thought so. Even more, there was hardly anyone around long enough to use it, leaving most of the facilities for him to indulge in by himself. Though, the company of only himself sometimes left him feeling longing and melancholy. And though the presence of his mother used to excite him, those cheery feelings didn't seem to be there anymore when he'd see her face. It became another every-other-day thing, but still made him more bubbly than he could make himself.

Ahote folded his arms over his chest and viewed the tavern with a mild countenance, "Sit down while I fix something up for us. We might have some meat left." he looked over to Theo with a cheeky smirk, "Well, even if we don't,
I can still make something great. I'm really good at this sort of thing."
Ahote would cackle, almost proud of recognizing his own cooking skills, even if he was usually the only one to eat it.

For just a moment he could hear it. The voices from the distant and the near. Through every single whisper and mutter in the crevasse of his memories and unclear images, there was the voice of a girl.

For just a moment he could hear it— the sharpness which pierced through them all in one singular word. In one sound which broke into reality. The familiarity of another which had already been voicing a query for what had been presumed as hunger met his somewhat surprised expression.

That was why he was here wasn’t it? The idea seemed a fair excuse- Theo was certain there was some innocence in company that a boy simply desired within the gloom of this forgotten fortress. Of course it wasn’t as if he hadn’t presumed that there were other hopefully outcomes that the other dazed upon like the stars within the sky or the heroes they imagined within the stories that cycled in their heads.

Every human being did it- no matter how much they stressed on the opposite. Even Theo himself was guilty of the act.

He’d play along just for now in this harmless show.

Further into the structure did they go. With every empty spacing barely accompanied by the adornment of pictures on walls and the scatter of every table and chair, it was hard to truly capture the fact that anyone once lived here. In some places dust had so fully taken root that it was beginning to layer itself onto the cobwebs that were once unnoticed at first glance. Even the light did no justice when the only source came from the distant flicker of a slight fire.

Fleeting as the fall of a dying comet, the golden pools shuddered in the glow of their own shade. Watching from the back of the youth as their brief motion into the depth of shadow was met by the tower of a large pair of doors. The aged texture was clearly met well with the also ancient surroundings. Obviously there wasn’t a need for redesigning if what had given shelter was not showing sign of collapsing. The appeal for appearance was lacking though it did not look like the kind of place that appreciated having the frequency of visitors. As much as the spacing would’ve fit it well.

Theo wasn’t exactly set in dismay over appearance. If anything the youth— Ahote— set a better example than he ever could. Others were just better at the things that he couldn’t manage. Was that not the majority however? He could never be entirely confident on that thought when he’d so surely isolated himself from humankind.

“I’ll be the judge of that.” he’d say, as if challenging the other in the excitement of his opposing words. There was curiosity instead whence he’d singled out the “we” in what had been spoken. So he was not the only one living here? That seemed quite obvious— not that Ahote was incapable of taking care of himself. Still it left much wonder on who else lived in this silent and gloomy castle. A single person? A dozen or more? Doubtful that there could be anything more than that he just figured that there was more than enough that it seemed a rarity to encounter one.

It was not the quantity which mattered— rather it was what they were like.

The kitchen had been dimly lit with the flicker of candlelight, the air thick with the smell of melting wax. Growing up with such an inefficient source of light, one learns to accept the conditions. There were many times he had wondered how different the place would be if all these candles had been done away with and replaced with lightbulbs or even lanterns. The fortress looked more like a medieval prison than anything else. The smell of wax was the smell of home to Ahote, and he greeted it like he would a friend.

Briskly, he filled a small black pot with lukewarm water, jasmine rice, and placed it on a gas burner before turning the knob until a small, orangish blue flame flickered and hissed. After the pot came a relatively aged and worn skillet, its scorched metal the color of coal here and there. Even the tools had seen better days, and every time Ahote saw them he'd have a sudden boost of determination to purchase better, more expensive tools. However, after he'd eat, the determination transformed into satisfaction and decided to discard the thought. From the fridge to the skillet, and from his metal palm did long strips of bacon fall onto the hot metal, and would sizzle in its salty grease.

Ahote sighed with a smile stretched on his lips, clearly thinking thoughts that tickled him. His cheeks flushed a soft pink against his pale skin, hues flickering between the bacon and Theo, who awaited the food patiently. The rice boiled, bacon sizzled, and the boy's feet tapped against the stone floorboards as he ambled over to his waiting friend zealously. Pulling out a chair, Ahote took a seat next to him, "You aren't hurt, are you? Cuts? Abrasions?" he smiled, his eyes wet and glistening with awe. He had been worried about this, a concern that had been no more than a lingering thought for the longest.

His tawny companion reeked of sweat and weeds, a scent that been painfully obvious in contrast to what odors and smells Ahote had been used to. He needed a bath, for sure! Ahote's smile morphed into a cheeky sneer, "You smell awful, you know that? Were you homeless?" he giggled. Question came after question, his curiosity pouring out through his mouth like water through a faucet.

Close by the fire rebounded, dancing upon each dissipating log as it left a glow of amber discarded into the captivating presence of such a useful yet, violent element. However beautiful or influencing it was ( it was still a slight light in the darkness ). It would never compete with the sunlight that hardly, if ever, extended so gracefully past the forever blanket of winter. The weather worked wonders depending on the region, and here, despite the isolation and mercilessly nature of the cold, it was the bare flicker that was beginning to tease at the only soul who truly required it. For a moment Theo closed his eyes. He could smell the meat against the metal, the tease of steam which wafted into the relatively spacious area and the movement of the other. With every tap against the floor, and every shift of work, it reminded him of what could have been described as home.

A heaviness weighed upon the lace of long lashes. In the comfort of smell and sounds, he was starting to fall into a near slumber. Unfortunately it was brief. The presence to his right made work of that.

“What?” a mumble of disbelief to being so abruptly taken from a potential rest, he gathered the restless query, “I’m fine.” there was the usual furrow in his brows, yet Theo was beginning to wonder whether or not the company had gotten hurt. He wasn’t as inclined to worry about injuries unless they could not be healed or prevented him from necessary movement. Trouble lay with the fact that the energy of light was what aided this cause. In fact it was quite easy for him to die as it was for any other mortal being.

How vulnerable he was in such a place ( yet how secure all at once ).

”I should be asking you the same question.. you’re a lot more fragile after all.” as if meaning to instil annoyance in the other with the remark of being more “fragile”, there was slight hesitation in the words of the other which came. It was perhaps more fuel to the flare of a temper that settled deep within, yet the curiosity and excitement never did stray from the large irises that reflected the similarity of a thousand angles and corners of a topaz gemstone. Slightly did it distract him.

“Y-You brat, what did you just say?” Theo leant forth, the glare clear within his captivating pools. It was almost as piercing as the cold which winded through every current. Every sliver of air that overlapped the missing wave of warmth and ghosted upon the flesh. “...Unfortunately some of us don’t have that luxury,” he started, gradually calming himself with each word, “I like to think that wherever I can sleep, is home enough for me, rather…” a thought did cross his mind, though he’d quickly rid of it, “Anyway, it’s not like it matters. I’ll be gone before you know it.” a glance was made into the darkness. Whatever had been tossing sights every chance he’d turn his back was something inhuman, and at the same time it was both harmless. With these current eyes it was a useless endeavour to see into the lightless places. “Just as it should have been from the start.” annoyance strained itself upon the tone of every word, though it had faded into something a bit more soft.

Ahote's lips would quirk up into a smile once hearing such a rude way of expressing concern in addition to his more than satisfying response to the boy's comment. Though Ahote seemed to jeer at Theo, his tawny companion truly did reek of sweat and weeds. It was the awful smell of a hot, humid day spent soaking in a lake by the woods. Ahote's quirky smile snapped into a mischievous smirk, playfully raising his hands as if some sort of officer asked it of him, "All I'm saying is that you need a bath. You really do reek of sweat. It's gross." he chuckled, hands returning back to his lap, "Well, while you're here, I bet you'd feel better after a hot bath and a good meal. Speaking of which. . ." Ahote's voice hushed into thought, rising from his seat and ambling to the kitchen.

The popping of bacon grease became continuously more notable as Ahote approached the hot skillet. The bacon had been crispy and cooked on both sides, and the rice ready to be served. The smell of salt filled his nose as he plucked the bacon from the skillet with a fork, and placed it on a plate. Following that came a few scoops of jasmine rice and slices of wheat bread. It had only been enough to fix one plate, Ahote realizing that he wasn't as hungry as he thought he was. Still, he sliced himself some bread and butter as well.

Ahote turned the dials to their lowest settings and left the dirty skillet and pot on the cooling burners as he took the two plates back over to the table where the two sat and chatted. "Savor it, we don't have seconds." he snickered, eyes narrowing joyfully through his shock of raven hair. Ahote placed the larger plate with a spread of food over it just in front of the waiting Theo and seated himself with his much smaller one with a stick of butter on an even smaller plate. With pink cheeks and a soft smile, Ahote clapped his hands together, "Enjoy."

Ahote tore a piece of bread with his pearly whites, chewing silently. His feet tapped and eyes stared blankly at the wooden table. What did Theo mean when he said it should've been that way from that start? Did he enjoy being alone? Was dragging him here a nuisance to him? Suddenly, Ahote's chewing slowed and tapping accelerated impatiently. He swallowed, turning to face Theo with a weak smile, "Say, don't you want to live life a bit more? I know you say you're satisfied wherever you can sleep, but what about friends and fun? People to talk to besides telling them to shoo?" Ahote queried softly. He spoke with almost a certain melancholy to his tone, his eyes wet and chest heavy with the thought of Theo's inevitable departure. When was the last time Ahote had sat down and eaten with someone? Teased them? It seemed as if almost every question he'd ask were more his desires than Theo's.

There was little awareness to the linger of smell. With his surroundings so consumed by the fresh leafy draft and the murkiness of forest waters, everything eventually became the same. Supposedly he had too. Still Theo gave no heed to the commentary, fists clenched, eyes closed and brows jerking against the muscle which allowed such expressions to be seen- was forced into appearing opposite to the harsh presence of irritation. Within the toxic formation of words that spewed upwards violently like smoke from the fire, they clouded his mind to the point he’d barely taken note of the other leaving. It look few seconds for him to realize the silence was discarded in the company of nothing, however in the familiarity of a noiseless and empty surrounding, Ahote had already returned.

It was a simple meal, but even then it’d never been unappealing. Golden shades glanced towards the youth, his movements carefree and loose. His mischievous smile and the flutter of his lashes- how obvious it was that the act of making something to eat made someone so content. Or maybe it’d been the fact of making it for someone besides himself? The furrow in the brows eased slightly at that thought, and slowly the mouth greeted the allure of what lay in wait upon the silvery shine of a plate. With every motion of the jaw it halted at the taste, the bitter notion in the captivating irises twinkling like a brief flicker within the stars.

When was the last time he’d eaten a meal?
Through every bite a hard and straining thought pressed on the matter.

When was the last time someone had shown him such kindness?
He wasn’t as vengeful against an entire race if a single fragment among thousands treated him poorly. The idea that humans were the plague within the world was such a poor idea. Rather- they were quite unpredictable- and in this case. Theo paused the pursuit of finishing off the last slice of bread.

”That would be nice.” altering the weight into the back of the seat, the eyes refused to encounter the opposition for the few seconds which passed by, ”That would be nice- but… I cannot have that.” the hand laced under the arm, folding the pair together so they rested against his somewhat hunched form. ”As things are right now, friends and fun are the least of my concerns.” the irises glimpsed brilliantly towards Ahote, a genuine look tracing clear through them as he’d continue to speak, ”I get it kid, you’re lonely. In this giant excuse for a home, I wonder how you can manage it when it seems so lifeless. When was the last time you cooked a meal for someone, or when was the last time you actually sat together with someone? Nay- I don’t want to know… the both of us…” the hand reached for the bread, the weapons of the mouth tearing through the soft layer, chewing the well placed flavour of butter until it disappeared through the passage of a throat. The silence wandered just a bit further than the last time.

    If only I could stay.

Ahote slumped back into his chair, chewing his bread slowly and silently. There had been no words to tackle his tongue when Theo would finish speaking. Yet even if there was, what was there to say? The youth sat there with a large piece of bread crumbling between his wet teeth, thoughtlessly tapping his digits against the table. The food had been good, but Ahote could only indulge in it bitterly.

Ahote quickly shifted his twitchy fingers to his lap, fiddling with them impatiently. His cheeks were pink with blood and eyes so narrowed they were akin to blades. Deep breaths struggled to escape his lips as if an enormous weight had been dropped on his chest. Looking at his feet, he spoke with a trembling voice, "I'm not lonely, I'm just. . ." Ahote held his fleshed fist within his metal palm, squeezing until his pale skin began to scratch against the steel. The statement in of itself made him quiver with frustration and fright. Was this really going to be his first and last meal with a friend? A companion? Would this be the last time he'd experience such a feeling? The thought had tightened the grip against his own flesh, his lips quivering anxiously.

Then, as if a small fire had flickered to light, the youth quirked up to look at Theo through his shock of unkempt raven hair, "Would you like a job here?" he began softly, "If you're concerned about those guys who tried to take you, this is perhaps the most concealed, safe place in the area." Ahote's eyes lit up as if he had witnessed something spectacular. There hadn't been any other options. He had been convinced that he couldn't let such a powerful and vibrant soul slip between his fingers, out of arms reach. The thought of returning to a home of silence and darkness had been more dreadful after feeling such warmth, far too dreadful for Ahote to bare. The two would sit so close to one another, yet the distance between the two boys had been insurmountable, and the youth had been determined to close it.

Ahote's lips curved into a sheepish smile, "This doesn't have to be the last meal we have together, or with anyone else for that matter. In. . . in exchange for your services, I can provide food, a space for yourself, and as much freedom as you need to get what you need to get done, as long as you return to us. To me." he chuckled. Of course, his bold statement had been honest and genuine, and only his nervous laughter could help soothe his anxieties in uttering such words.

In the reaction came the visible counter of frustration.
Through every clicking rebound of the jaw, jerking into the sturdy and final fragments of bread, he watched Ahote with a slight form of concern. The other was so distraught by unspoken thoughts to which the mind of his own could only imagine. With small gestures and the everlasting silence which had been apparent for itself in the formation of discomfort and tension, he waited patiently for the company to gather what was to be said. Whether or not it may have been defeat ( the offer had certainly never been anticipated ).

Unlikely that his mind had not wandered upon the idea. For one who could not give one sliver of heed towards those that may or may not have found his presence enjoyable, there was a contradiction with the fact that a majority of what had been neglected was also the chilling truth which pierced through. One may be heartless enough to disregard the feelings of another, though surprisingly, that was not what settled with Theo. A senseless note for someone who acted so rashly and persuaded a tongue laced by venom. Even when he wished to be genuine, through words it seemed quite opposite.

”You’re so needy.” a bold example, the posture was eased into the rigid chair, ”Do you really need a friend that badly?” making a jest towards the youth, the lips curled upwards into that of a smirk. Mayhap he’d found enjoyment that someone so lacking in age could speak so confidently yet, so unsurely. It was as if the process in mind came later than the words which departed, even then the point had been made. Theo looked elsewhere for just a moment, there were a series of doubts which clouded the potential answer. With the darkness that shrouded this land in an everlasting season of winter, it was subject to lack of light. How long he may last in this place was a risk which came in feeding from the bare glow of a fire, or the twinkle of a bedroom lamp. It would not be enough to sustain this form.

He’d grow weaker ( he’d become someone with no use ).
Or was that better than being vulnerable to those which lingered in the dark.

”What kind of job exactly?” after much delay the query appeared as something at which could have been taken as the answer. The relief in the worry which had so mercilessly toyed with the nerves of the youth before him. Subject to distracting himself on the roughness of bread and the rhythm of each finger descending against the table, perhaps it would fade into the annoyance of his prior attitude. With each falter into a second, into a minute and into an hour, he gathered the possibilities. Still the conclusion could never come into sight ( he was not a bearer to the future after all ).

Ahote continued to fume quietly in his seat, stuffing his hot cheeks with buttered bread and grinding the heels of his feet into the stone ground. He had read somewhere in his mass collection of books that people did tend to get upset when their feelings were guessed correctly, but he never expected that he'd experience it first hand. His chest was tight and head was hot with frustration, almost pouting like a young child.

Ahote's fuming was brief as his topaz hues would finally meet Theo's golden ones, his lips curving into a quizzical smirk and body slumped back into the chair. Indignantly, Ahote scoffed at him, "Needy? Opportunistic is what I'd call it." he sucked the last bit of butter from his fingertips with the wetness of his tongue, reaching to grab the next slice of bread on his plate with a look of pride in his glossy eyes. "I'm perfectly fine on my own. I don't need anyone." he took a large bite of his freshly buttered bread. Ahote had been certain that this was true since he had been the only one taking care of himself for as long as he could remember. Even when he was still living with his "real" mother, he could only ever recall empty rooms, a silent house, and the sound of him munching on crackers she would keep out for him.

Ahote's buttery, metal digits ran through the threads of his unkempt raven-hair, resting the side of his jaw in its firm grip as he watched the mildly inquisitive Theo. Suddenly, a smile twisted to his lips in an instant and eyes lit up with zeal,  "Well, since you’re curious, he leaned closer to Theo, "this is actually the Basilisk Fang guild's fortress. Well hidden, right?" Ahote snickered. Submerged in shadows cast by an overcast of clouds, the fortress could only be discovered by someone's undaunted attempted to scale the mountain to the very top, most of which had died trying. "Our guild works to collapse Fiore's standing government. You might've read about our supposedly heinous acts. Or, you might've not. You're a hobo, after all." he snickered again, stuffing the last bit of bread into his cheeks, "You'll be employed for your combat and common abilities in order to protect and assist me from any harm or obstacle. A bodyguard, so to speak," his eyes would light up again as if awaiting the climax of a movie, "in exchange for food, shelter, and protection under the guild's and my name. Of course, you'll still have as much freedom and privacy as you need to feel comfortable. That sounds pretty fair, right?"

The other was not shy to reveal what he had felt. In the slight pout of his lips, it was a clear indication to Theo that what he had said sparked a truth. Something that was indeed amusing enough at which he struggled just to hide a grin, teasing itself onto the corner until a hand momentarily traced over the view, listening in silence as the boy would begin to speak once again. In the momentary denial, or the lie to be told in spite of how embarrassed he'd been, Theo simply listened. He wasn't particularly insistent on making Ahote admit something that could've been disheartening; besides there were more pressing matters at which required his attention.

"Call me that again and I walk," he'd warn, the hand greeting the other against the table, clenched in an unsettling irritation. Maybe he himself did no justice on the idea of expressing his displeasure over how those treated him. Name calling in particular, even in the most harmless aspect got a rise out of the fire. Thankfully it was a scarce current of wind, rather than the direct addition of fuel that pressed the heat to burn even further. "Never heard of it, maybe because it hasn't done anything." Theo bit back, unintentionally of course. It was just in the nature of someone who acted like a grump.

"That does sound fair... perhaps unlikely for a dark guild." his eyes narrowed, a serious underlay tracing his tone, "What's a brat like you going to do against them? No, actually, why need someone to protect you in the first place?" the head was beginning to rattle against the quickening sprout of possible questions. Tugging fiercely on resistance was making his head hurt just ever so slightly. "Not that I mind protecting you, if what you're fighting for isn't something so heartless," that I might just turn against you, those words were left discarded, a worrisome possibility that settled quietly at the back of his mind.

"Shouldn't you be worrying about other things rather than the government?" for just a moment he'd seem somewhat wistful over the excitement this youth had displayed. Just maybe it'd already been to late. After all, Theo knew nothing of Ahote, other than his quirky and somewhat annoying demeanor. He was just a boy that lived in a castle, a boy who found a thrill in the activities of those with a darkness so traumatizing, they'd wish to inflict it upon others. Or maybe they hadn't wished for it at all.

The golden hues glanced towards the metallic replacement, disregarding it earlier, but now paying heed to what had come of it. Deep down inside a part of him wanted to prevent the same thing from happening again. Something at which could've been more harmful than a missing limb.

Ahote's eyes glinted with amusement and plastered his face with a mischeivous smile in seeing the frustrated Theo brood. There was a mild wave of guilt that overcame him from time to time, however. After all, if it were any other person, he would likely get a smack upside the head instead of playful threats.

Ahote's expression hardened at the bold words that spewed from Theo's mouth. His brows scrunched together and flesh tightened but was reluctant to say anything. He wasn't wrong, after all. Basilisk Fang wasn't particularly known in many communities besides those directly affected by them. It was a sorry excuse for people of justice, Ahote would resolve months ago.

Theo continued to shower his comments onto the bubbly boy, in which he swallowed in silence until the brash words had left an ash-like hue to creeping up his complexion. Suddenly, his expression hardened, "What?" Ahote spoke incredulously, his cheeks now overcome with a light flush, "Worry about what other things? There's nothing more important than this. . ." his expression became dejected and voice low as the words poured from his lips and fingers fiddled with one another, like some anxious tic. Ahote sighed, "There is nothing more important than this. We need more people to realize that." he felt his eyes become wet with the threat of tears in the very back of his sockets. The stinging of the moisture ached within his head, feeling the weight that needed to fall, but squinted so much it looked as if he were glaring to prevent the humiliation of sobbing before his companion. His complexion twisted into something far more shamefaced and would hide it beneath his shock of hair as he stared down at the table.

Ahote winced in silence before holding his breath and raising his flushed face with a wistful simper, "I'm not as tough as I'd like to be. I'm only just learning about this whole magic ordeal, and how to use my own power. Someone honest and capable is who I need to watch over me until I can do that." his eyes glistened with the thin layer of moisture that would dare creep to pass his eyelids, "What we're fighting for isn't heartless. It may not affect you, or even me, for that matter. . . but there are people out there who suffer from the corruption of those in power. And. . ." he paused, his eyes narrowing as if the weight deep within his hues was about to give way, clenching his fists and gazing deeply into the soft wooden table, ". . . and who am I to ignore that?" he grimaced. Even if his words were meant to appear as cool, or perhaps even inspiring, never did his countenance twist into that of so much regret and indignancy.

Why was it that he felt so pained at the words of his friend? Why was it that he couldn't recall anything more valuable than this purpose? Why was this purpose valuable? Oh, Ahote thought, if only there were "other things" to worry about.

The truth struck clear in the reaction. Two chemicals rebounding in the experiment into something negative and most of all dangerous, threatening to burst through the binding of a capsule. For the youth it was hard to hold it together. Theo meant nothing more than to speak of something which was genuine, something he’d only thought Ahote should have deserved than the emptiness of a dreary castle. Maybe it was just that which hurt the other more than anything. As much as he’d struggled to grasp onto the lively appeal just moments before, Theo knew of what surfaced beneath the solidity of the walls which kept it all together. He understood it more than anything, perhaps he’d even been envious of the fleeting glamour in the life of a human.

    How precious it truly was.

A heavy breath parted from his lips, one hand allowing fingers to lace momentarily through the disorderly strands on the back of his head. Although rash he’d bit his tongue, thinking on in a somewhat uncomfortable silence. What was the right choice? To stay or to go. He’d always pictured what would benefit him before anybody else, yet now Theo was beginning to think otherwise. No matter where he’d go-- they’d find him eventually. What remained in question was to when that time would come. “Sorry... “ the unexpected mutter came, allowing himself the urge to look back at Ahote, “I can’t agree with you. Maybe not now, maybe not ever.” for a moment it gave assumption to rejection, “But…” he’d continue, “I’ll stay with you.” to protect you, thinking on the embarrassing line which never would retreat from the secrecy of his mind, he stared sharply at the seemingly frustrated company.

The hand that had been beneath the array of chocolate pieces nonchalantly settled atop the head of Ahote, petting him as though he were a gloomy looking puppy. “There are things way more important than this kid… like you. Not anybody else or some tainted group of people,” the gesture continued, finding the softness appealing, “If this is what you want to do… then I won’t stop you… after all it’s not up to me to make these decisions.” a casual motion, the touch was removed into the support of his rough features. Never a smile, never a laugh. Golden watched the struggling youth with something of a distant longing. How jealous he was of a life that was so fleeting, so precious and most of all so great.

At the same time-- of something that was also… so sad.

“So? What do I have to do to join this abstract group?” teasing in order to lighten the mood, the lips showed some movement in the slight smile which formed. Again an aspect that was so unlikely of the usually rash and brutally honest individual. It wasn't as if he was prone to misunderstanding absolutely everything, in fact Theo remained quite keen on observing how others may have felt. The truth behind each word, the hesitation, the mood. It had also been easy to decipher in a species that was so known for their expressing things through how they felt. In music, in art and in food. In everything.

A sharp stinging festered in the back of Ahote's head, the familiar feeling of tears threatening to pour, and hearing Theo's words of supposed rejection had only made his head ache even more. He figured that down the path he was taking, many were bound to disagree with him, perhaps even fighting him in a rebellion of his ideals, and although he had anticipated this, it was as if no kind gestures or reassuring words could prepare him for the pain of it all. His heart fell to his stomach and twisted deep within his gut. The chatter, if there was any, became nothing but unimportant noise. Static. The light dripped from his eyes and faded into a darkness in which he stared blankly into, twisting his thumbs over one another restlessly. This was until Theo uttered words yet again.

Ahote lifted his head, his cheeks hot with blush and eyes glossy with a film of tears that began to well up in the corners of his eyes, and suddenly, the light returned to his eyes and twinkled with relief. His lips quivered so frivolously that not even a smile could plaster his face. Despite his look of distraught, the boy could feel nothing but a pleasant lift in his chest. Like the weight that had fallen deep within his gullet had become light as a feather, and tickled his bones like one would. Ahote would raise a pale hand to this chest, grasping it tightly through the fabrics that shielded it. His head would fall again, a smile finally cracking his lips in feeling the gentle pound of his heart against his ribs. Ahote nodded, "What was that? Sounded like you were confessing your love to me or something!" soft peals of laughter escaped his trembling lips as he spoke, raising his wrists to his eyes to wipe away to welling tears.

The raven-haired youth raised his head to face Theo's once again, eyes soft and wet with tears smudged against his cheeks, reflecting shards of light through the candlelight. Ahote began to chuckle, looking over at the table now with eyes staring so longingly at the wood that one could almost see the sea of thought pour out through those eyes. Quietly, he twiddled his fingers together again, "I have a long life ahead of me, I think. What's important and what isn't will change over time," he slouched back into his seat, staring up at the ceiling now, "But how things are right now is fine, I tell myself. These things come and go. . ." his voice would fade into something hoarser.

Finally, Ahote returned from those thoughts with a grin plastered on his face. A grin so toothy it had almost looked as if he were being paid to do it. Swiftly, a metal hand slapped itself onto Theo's chocolate shoulder, "So," Ahote began, "you join with a little something called a guild mark. Where should we put it?" his grin twisted into more of a sneer as his eyes would drift from Theo's top to bottom. Obviously, this in of itself would be a challenge to determine!

    [END]
