    GRACE UNDER FIRE
Sorano’s day was going along, perfectly normal as always until suddenly a rift in space opens above her head and drops a magic circuit on her head. It might have been cool if it hadn’t hurt as much as it did, but after having spent all these years getting wrapped up in complicated magic-related situations, the teen had come to expect unfortunate incidents such as these. Magic was never as convenient as it seemed. While on one hand, the guild master rubbed her head and frowned at the painful lump she could feel forming on her noggin, she was also curiously peering at the circuit as well as the space above her desk from which it had fallen. She’d written spells all around the room and into the walls and curtains to keep unwanted attacks and magical items from getting through, so the circuit would have to be from someone trusted… right? None of her spells seemed to have been disturbed… But who was there that would actually send a message in such a form? Neither Ezra or Mura used this sort of magic, and usually guild members would come up and knock. The only people outside of Fairy Tail who had access should be Miss Litbell, and… Oh wait. Right, there was that girl from before, the one who seemed to constantly be in need of help.

Lexa Grimoire was someone who had been a fixture in Sorano’s life as a mage since she was a lowly C rank mage, a mere beginner in the world of magic and all that nonsense. Time and time again, she’d had random circuits dropped everywhere, sending some ominous message about where the poor girl was. It was obvious that Lexa’s story was much deeper than what she had assumed when she first got involved with the girl, but how complicated it was, Sorano wasn’t sure she wanted to know. With a sigh, Sorano pressed down on the circuit’s switch, hearing a surprisingly mature voice call out through it. “Come to Thunder Island.” The voice was firm and resolute, and though Sorano waited a good twenty seconds for anything else to come through, that was it. Probably the strangest message she’d received as of yet. Whether Lexa was in danger or had figured out something else, the letter mage had no idea. However, Lexa wasn’t a badly paying client, and Sorano might have just gotten the slightest bit attached by now. Many of her most prized items were gifted to her by the girl, after all.

However, something she had learned by now about jobs involving Lexa Grimoire was that it was always necessary to take someone with her. Lexa seemed to associate herself with really psychotic and dangerous people, and you never knew if you’d end up getting your mind taken over by a crazy transboze or end up fighting giant hordes of Lexa clones. Sighing, she picked herself up along with the circuit, and shook Hoshi awake. “Lexa’s calling us to Thunder Island. We better find someone and get going already.” Blinking sleepily, the exceed groaned. It was only six in the morning: no wonder she was cranky. “What? That girl again? Jobs with her are always needlessly terrifying,” the feline complained, shuddering with the memory of the transboze labyrinth they’d stumbled into the first time around.

Ignoring Hoshi’s complaints, Sorano knocked on Ezra’s office, then Mura’s. No response. She could try to find them, but it would take too long. It was likely that they were already out on jobs, considering how busy the two were. Then, maybe she could find Hana? Maybe Eris? Nah… Hana was always off traveling these days, and Eris was often absent as well. It wasn’t likely that they’d be available. No one else was strong enough for her to trust with one of these jobs yet, so she’d have to find outside help. That was… tiring. Stretching, she flipped through her mental contact book, remembering back to mage’s she’d met before. Julius, perhaps? Mm, no, he’d disappeared a while back, hadn’t he? She’d remembered the panic on Hana’s face when she reported the news of his vanishing. Julius had introduced her to quite a few people though, including the former guildmaster of Golden Phoenix. Another disappearance, that one.

What about the guy that had been with her? Blinking, she shrugged. It couldn’t go too badly. Except… She knew nothing about him besides the fact that his name was… What was it? Tor something? Who knew, honestly. Sighing, Sorano pulled up a job request form at the front desk, writing out a quick description. Unknown situation on Thunder Island, mage B rank or above needed. Specific priority for some dude who was in Golden Phoenix, had blond hair, and had Tor as part of his name. Wow, wasn’t this description fantastic? She’d be shocked if she actually found him, but it was always worth getting to know mages that her friends recommended. Handing it back to the desk fairy, it was sent zipping off through the lacrima system to all legal guilds, in hope that this particular dude would be able to answer it.

Meanwhile, she had her own travels to attend to. Hoshi had finally come down the stairs, and she easily equipped herself with a more suitable outfit and supplies. With mirrors winking from her belts, holding the weapons that she would require, the two set out to the closest port. Thunder Island wasn’t too far away, which she was thankful for. She recalled having been here once for one of Guildmaster Kira’s little activities, but that had been a long time ago. Things might not be all the same now, and she had to be prepared.

it may sound absurd but don't be naive
even heroes have the right to bleed
Not considering the doctor and his dedication to manage a telegram every month, the swordsman was hardly the sort to receive written mail under his name ever so often, much less an invitation with any manner of dignified merit. Not that it bothered him in particular, rather, it only managed to fortify the passive ridicule that he'd direct at himself every other chance he had. Him being 'Torian' was enough, and that much equated to a fleeting, forgettable existence that no one took interest in - a label that he could effectively use to separate himself from the buzz of the cities without anyone to pester him for his presence there.

Solitude had, after all, become a comfort he'd come to seek upon pure impulse alone.

To the Origin Spirit, while these tendencies hadn't affected the vessel's normal functions, that didn't conclude the question of whether or not it was an unnerving practice. It wasn't necessarily true to consider Torian as the lonely sort (the spirit existed in his head for a reason), but a man by himself could only accomplish so much that the soul dreads the day that Torian might not have anyone to hear his calls, no one to come running when he screams, no comfort to heed apart from his own.

And it was, of course, to the spirit's delight when a subtle plea for the blonde swordsman's specific aid appeared as a footnote at the end of an endearing job offer. It had been one out of the many papers that haphazardly conquered the surface of a job-request board, something Torian would've only passed out of curiosity, unaware that the small spike in interest would spiral into a long-drawn out discussion between him and the Origin Spirit about the credibility of the tiny request, and if it was even him that its writer sought for out of the hundred other possible candidates.

'You can't be sure that that isn't you.' the disembodied voice urged, his essence quivering in his attempt to motivate the vessel, 'Who else matches that description better than you do?'

The swordsman felt his jaw tighten as he analyzed the writing for the fifth time within the given minute, a surge of alienation briefly overtaking him. 'This is all too bizarre for me...give me a moment.' he managed, fingering the bridge of his nose in an attempt to collect himself, and think rationally.

'I personally think there's no fault in looking into it.' the spirit said, 'C'mon, I appreciate how you love my company over others, but human contact is essential for fleshy things like you.'

A snicker - 'Oh, wait, are you too scared that you'd only scare them with your lack of viable social skills?'

Torian paused, realizing that the fire of vanity from the Origin started to prod at his psyche again, eliciting a reaction that could only be described as unnecessary ill-humored, however involuntary it was. It had been an avalanche of events that lead him to becoming stuck with a constant, irrevocable reminder that there was someone there, other than his conscience, to berate at his mistakes, tossing around snarky comments without a care for how it belittled him further. Yet the spirit meant well, that much was understandable from a non-cynical perspective, for it was the sort to enjoy a bicker or two when there was no need for the regular advising that he was responsible for.

But for a voice of reason, the spirit sometimes felt too juvenile, striking up petty remarks like that.

'...Is that a challenge?' Torian sneered, eyeing the paper with pronounced intensity.

The spirit's essence folds over, settling wordlessly on the floor of the Chronicle as if imitating a sitting position, or whatever it could be considered since souls had no legs to bend or torsos to curve. When the voice did start talking again, it felt more reserved, tired even, the normal trill in the spirit's verbal expressions dulling under the pretense of what appeared to be fatigue.

'Consider it what you must, but this could be someone who genuinely knows you...we've been on this little search for your memories for so long now, but every time we encounter a possible witness to your existence, you shy away and lock yourself up.' the spirit furrows a brow as he feels the vibrations that run through the glassy 'surface' beneath him, the Chronicle picking up the small hints of inner conflict that the vessel was currently withholding, swallowing, even.

'...What's holding you back? Don't you want to remember?'

Torian said nothing in return, but the sound of the paper leaving the job-board spoke of a myriad of feelings that his words failed to fully communicate.

And the spirit settles with it, sinking back into a silence that the swordsman interpreted as the Origin's reproduction of the human activity called sleep. Torian didn't know the exact time it adapted to this habit, but it gave him a temporary repose from all the listless chatter firing off his brain, where he could revel in his own thoughts without something else invading it, or, as he hesitated to admit, without anyone telling him off for his poor taste in decisions.

"...You're right." he whispered, a fragile voice addressing no one but the wind, "I don't want to."

    - - - -

What followed was a noiseless sea-trip that would span the waters of Fiore for Thunder Island, somewhere where the ocean darkened and the danger increased the more proximity they had with the place. The song of waves and turbulent winds, however, were largely drowned out by the poison in his brain, afflicting him with an insistence as strong as the devil's. The idea of abandoning his responsibility to remember persisted with an uncanny shine to it, regardless of the necessity it posed, and it was a temptress of a thought that would draw him further, and further in.

It wasn't until the island and its skies slowly reared themselves into view that he'd willingly undo the dismal trance Torian had cast upon himself for the duration of the trip, the somberness of the atmosphere all but overshadowing the turmoil inside him.

"Thunder Island!" the captain hollered, the words signaling the sailors to start unloading the cargo, and for the swordsman to leave the premises of the sea-faring vehicle. The gratitude was brief and contrite, since both parties felt too occupied to stretch the polite gesture of thank-you and you're welcome. They were no sooner separated, where the ship disappeared eastward, and the strange hooded figure continued forward, having been left to his own devisings as the thunder peppered the sky above him intimidatingly.

'I suppose I'll just wait here then?' he thought.

    GRACE UNDER FIRE
Sorano quite frankly wasn’t sure what to expect. In fact, she didn’t even know if she’d recognize the guy at all – they hadn’t exactly interacted much. Still, hopefully it wouldn’t be too hard, with Thunder Island having very few people living on it. The ship pulled into the harbor of the island, and Sorano disembarked, Hoshi flying nervously behind her. The girl looked about the docks, looking for a sign of the man who was to come. Even if he hadn’t received the request, someone else had probably seen it, right? The wind was already picking up, and they probably couldn’t spend much longer here before the rain came down. It was Thunder Island, after all, the weather was bound to be a bit…wonky. Quickly, the letter mage exchanged a glance with Hoshi before rushing over to the slight rain cover offered by a small building at the edge of the docks. There wasn’t much civilization here, but this particular piece of architecture really was in an ideal position.

As they awkwardly speedwalked/flew over, the letter mage noticed a single lonely figure standing at the edge of the docks, a hood covering their figure. Hmm? Sorano turned and approached them at a brisk pace, stopping a couple feet away. “Excuse me, are you here for a mage’s job?” They definitely had a magical signature about them, one that was strong enough to fit the requirements of the request she had sent out. Whether it was that Tori person Julius had told her of, she could not be sure. Upon closer inspection, however, things looked a bit stranger. Their aura seemed to be intermingled with another one, not unlike Mura when he combined with his spirits. However, whether they really were a summoner mage like the shaman was remained unclear.

“I apologize for sending out a request at such short notice, but this really is something I had to attend to immediately. The job concerns an old client of mine named Lexa Grimoire, who has hired me to solve mysteries about her past and her origins. As this involves some rather dangerous situations, it would not have been wise for me to go in alone. She has not given any other specifics of the task at hand except for the location, but I would assume that she should arrive quite soon.”

Sure enough, at the edge of her vision, the letter mage spotted two figures walking closer to them under the gloom of the clouded sky. One appeared to be clothed in a blue kimono, and the other was wearing that standard yellow and white schoolgirl uniform that Lexa always wore. The girls otherwise looked completely identical, and Sorano knew that Lexa had apparently been reunited with her twin. The blue kimono Lexa bowed carefully to them, her face oddly empty. The other one was strangely serious as well, in stark contrast to the bubbly blonde who’d greeted Sorano in the past. “Hello, are you the mage of the name ‘Sorano Granon’? I am the Lexa Grimoire who accompanied you on previous tasks. I realize my personality and state of mind have been greatly altered, as I have forgotten all previous events and will forget this very conversation very soon as well. Who is this? Have I also met him before?” The girl in the blue kimono addressed them, then turned to face the hooded stranger.

The letter mage blinked in surprise. What exactly had transpired in the time she had been gone? How had things come down to this? The other Lexa, while she may have looked like the girl Sorano had accompanied on previous jobs didn’t seem like the girl she knew though, her aura moving in different patterns. If so, did that mean this blue kimono-garbed Lexa was a clone, or the one she really knew? There was no way to tell.

it may sound absurd but don't be naive
even heroes have the right to bleed
To him, the notion of time and its indispensable quality could only manage to hold as much weight as a pail of water in comparison to the heavier, more essential things. It was enough for it to have some substance to influence his decisions, but unremarkable enough to be dismissed in favor of the current situation. Wasted time was not a big offense to the swordsman, particularly if there was a reason to behold, and inevitably to regard, as well. If there were those who preferred that the other party arrived on the dot, Torian could indefinitely locate himself close to the other side of that spectrum, choosing to not be bothered. Should the queer stranger who requested for him specifically take a bit longer before arriving, there would be no other issue at hand apart from the schematic of their current job, the know-hows and the what-nots.

So when the swordsman registers a presence that had been thickly surrounded by potent magic approaching from to one side, he almost involuntarily took up a defensive stance, one foot edged back on impulse. If it had not been for her straightforward manner of addressing him, perhaps Torian would have already drawn his weapon and painted himself a big, big fool. Sadly, he was still a fool regardless.

    Oh, perish his hastiness.

Having withdrawn from his awkward position with a flushed face, Torian moves to direct his unwavering attention onto the beholder of the voice that called out to him, secretly invoking the divinity of Ishval's gods in a plea that his little stunt had gone unnoticed, or could be easily disregarded. A face-to-face angle eventually granted the swordsman an audience consisting of a single girl with dark hair and eyes so resolute, her youthful form sending his adulthood to shame. He blinks, once, taken aback by the level of decorum she presented herself with things as basic as her way of speech, effectively trumping him for a nanosecond before he processed a reply.

"Uh...oh- yeah, that would be me, Torian Pace." he said, one hand palming the nape of his neck in brief awkwardness, however moving to his chest a few breaths later, him making do with a small, casual curtsy, "At your immediate service, miss."

It didn't occur to him that he'd encounter a woman, much less a child on this endeavor. Had they been acquainted in the past? The extent of the gap between their ages was likely apparent, though he wasn't too sure, nor did Torian desire to judge her age by face-value alone. Perhaps she just had an extremely juvenile face, or a lifestyle that warranted an appearance that betrays age.

Alas, such a train of thought felt meaningless in the face of what the young lady (it applies regardless of age, he thought) mentioned after, her words elaborating on a tale of a girl, Lexa, and the answers to her past. Much like him, ironically. Her words end with a note of wanting exterior help despite the gravity of the situation, and while it was natural for someone to light up with a spark of confidence should they have been in his place, Torian could only exhibit the complete opposite as his chest tightens, a symptom of his lack of self-confidence causing his person to shrink and shrivel up.

Had there really not been anyone better suited for this...? It strained him to think that his level of skill was even considered, granted that the ethernano about the young girl's person felt so intensely packed that there was no mistaking her experience in battle being the greater one out of the two. He'd hate to imagine a scenario where his sword would be the cause of her undoing, or that his flaws wouldn't bring the outcome that she intended. He breathed in, mentally noting his dampened spirits with a bite to his lower lip - not today, he reminded himself, not today.

At the very least, the swordsman had to live up to 50% of what was expected of him, lest he disappoint the little miss so early on.

Lost in his self-deprecating thoughts, the swordsman's awareness would come off with slight delay, noticing the two blonde twins who'd arrive to greet them only after they'd begun talking. There was an odd level of familiarity between the siblings and the dark-haired wizard, Sorano as the twins had addressed her, and it nearly caught him off-guard when he'd been refer to by the one dolled up in blue garments.

"I...I'm afraid not." he said, unsure if it were the right thing to speak for himself over whom they sparked the conversation with, "I've been invited here on the account that Miss Granon wanted someone to assist her in whatever request you've in store for us."

After he spoke, a weighted feeling pressed down harder on his shoulders, as if a toxin consumed him whole with remarkable bite. Anxiety - he thinks to himself, opting to give the sensation a name to better acquaint himself with it, to kill it before it spreads. There was danger to be digested from the way the blonde girl spoke, a menace crawling behind them in the wilderness, and a battle that he largely felt unprepared for. The swordsman inhaled, this time sharply, his lungs grasping for release as a breath that he hadn't realized he'd been holding fell from his lips. They were to work together, after all, the best option now was to put trust in the others and...more importantly, in himself, for the war that waged in his thoughts seemed far more dangerous than anything at that moment.

    GRACE UNDER FIRE
Finally, the swordsman would turn his face, peering back at Sorano with the barely familiar features she recalled from that ball, seeming so long ago now. Yes – this was the person whom Julius had been acquainted with, she was sure of it now. His emotions seemed stagnant, dull but present, hanging heavily over his figure in a curtain of depression. Only a lick of surprise emanated from the aura around him at the appearance of the letter mage. Sorano would doubt her decision in bringing him here on this task for a moment, but quickly forced the feelings away. Lexa was here, she needed help, and the letter mage couldn’t spare any time thinking unnecessary thoughts. He would have to do. The man introduced himself as Torian Pace (Of course! Torian, that was it), and dipped down awkwardly in a sort of curtsy. lowering her head back at him in a brief movement she watched his emotions warp slightly while she explained her client’s plight. Self-doubt and nervous emotions streaked across the surface of the energetic field, and the letter mage sighed inwardly. So Torian was this sort of person, huh? Hopefully he didn’t allow his emotions to affect him in battle. "Oh, it's nice to meet you. I was introduced through Julius Seas? I believe he was acquainted with you."

Around this time was when the two Lexa Grimoires came up to the mages, the products of experiments that had not yet been made clear to them. How Lexa had lost her memories, Sorano had no idea either. In fact, it seemed that another layer was added to the entire situation every single time, leading to a confusing chain of events that never met its end. Raising her head as Lexa in the blue kimono began to speak again, they listened. “I see. So you two will be assisting us today, then. Please keep in mind that if this task ends up taking over a day to complete, I will lose any memory of the people here. My memory completely wipes itself clean every 24 hours, and we are trying to figure out the cause for this as well.” She paused to look around at them seriously, before continuing. “This island seems to be connected to all the Lexas that were created during the experiments, and several strange scientific experiments were performed here. Apparently something went wrong that caused this island to become a natural thunder magnet, so we called you out in case things become too dangerous for us to handle alone. It would be for the best if we were to have called you out here in vain, but honestly, we can’t predict anything that may happen.”

Both Lexas would scan their gazes over the two mages, before moving in a way that was creepily in sync, turning towards a path leading into the island. “Come this way – this is where we found that laboratory. It’s a dangerous journey, especially with a storm approaching, so we should hurry while the sun’s still out.” The blonde raised a hand to the sky, feeling for raindrops, then faced the hired mages with a grim expression. “Let’s get going.”

Already, the letter mage could feel the faint sensation of raindrops hitting her head, soaking through the raven hair and sending a soft chill up her spine at the sudden cold. This was inconvenient. Thunder clashed above their heads, as if to prove the point, but she set out anyways. Tracing a lazy finger through the air, Sorano would weave an invisible dome of rain protection around the group, keeping the droplets from soaking them through. Although it would not protect against attacks or magic, it was always nice to be able to travel without being damp and cold.

“So, how far away exactly is the laboratory this time?” They had moved from the docks onto a simple gravel path, the stones crunching beneath their feet. No obvious end could be seen in sight, but it was partially due to the stripped trees that stood gloomily around the road. Scorch marks colored the environment everywhere you looked, and it was obvious where the island had received its name. Thunder left its mark everywhere. It should have been easy to see through the forest had the trees not been so densely packed together, the dull gray meshing with the color of the ominous clouds. The other Lexa, the one that Sorano had not met before was the one who answered this time, turning and answering with a discouraging: “The other side of the island. Ships and flight don’t work well for the thunder here all the time, so we have to walk. It would take half an hour without any disturbances. I’m sorry we have to make you walk all this way, but that’s the only dock on the entire island that you just came from.”

So Thunder Island was even less inhabited than she had originally thought, huh? Feeling Hoshi shudder next to her, Sorano drew her fingers through the tabby’s wind-ruffled fur. “I see… Did the building of the lab and its experiments cause the unnatural weather here?” As the thought exited her mouth, the letter mage realized what an affirmative answer would imply – the entire Lexa laboratory mystery would then impact a whole lot more than just a few girls, wouldn’t it? If they were changing the climates of entire occupied islands, there was something a lot bigger going on than just some cloning.

“I believe so. The first mega thunderstorm here occurred around the same time as some of the scientists’ greatest breakthroughs, as far as we know.” Once again, it was the schoolgirl Lexa who answered while the kimono-clad blonde continued to face forward. Her emotions seemed to be a mess as well, whirling all sorts of chaotic colors that implied her self-loathing at having forgotten so much, having to depend on her clone. Sorano would frown at the dark mass that hung around the petite figure, but there wasn’t much she could do in the end. The emotionless mage wasn’t good at comforting others, and found that her actions often worsened situations instead of helping them along.

“Ah, I see. That’s quite worrisome.” Responding to schoolgirl Lexa’s reply, they continued to trudge down the path.

it may sound absurd but don't be naive
even heroes have the right to bleed
"Ah-" he swallowed, "...Right. That'd be me."

Though it was entirely out of the scope of her knowledge, there were to be an unfamiliar name thrown in between that cursory tone of her's, and with it came the damned feeling of coming to terms with his situation, sinking like lead into his system with an insistence far greater than normal. Nothing remained to help him understand the significance of that name to him, not even an inkling of vague recognition resurfaced as he upturned the empty corners in his head. He'd have known that there was no reason to continue digging further, always have, but the more you're coerced to endure the same riveting experience, what else was there to do but fall into habit?

It was meaningless to fabricate resentment now when the fault nestled atop his person almost far too affectionately than he liked to think. And with the probabilities aside, Torian Pace most likely did not have the heart to transfer the blame - it was his nature, after all, to be pitifully forgiving, to be affixed on concepts of kindness regardless if the world condemned him to hell and back.

And for a while, the swordsman says nothing.

    - - -

Exercising his liberties as an observer wasn't that of a riveting task to accomplish, for the swordsman held unto a certainty that he was better suited to absorbing information over stimulating its exchange across the different parties. His stunning lack of social skills regularly played out into a disadvantage more times than necessary, but what little he had in communication was made up for in Torian's ability to silence himself and listen - a facet of the human senses that he considered invaluable for an effective performance later on.

Of course, if the situation called for it, the swordsman wouldn't dare refuse the chance to question people for any useful information...regardless if he was still somewhat skittish at the thought. But considering Miss Granon appeared to have heralded the flow of the conversation in a timely fashion, it was safe to assume that his input wasn't a requirement to keep the exchange going. The far back of the small, four people line that the party created was a decisive position for his large figure as he opted to intentionally trail behind his slightly smaller companions - though it'd be injustice on his part to associate their forms to their experience.

'Hardly.' he thought, gingerly shoving his hands down the spaces of his pockets. '...My gut says that I'm probably the junior in this group.'

Problems aside - from what he'd grasp of the situation, an experiment conducted in the years prior resulted in the island's abnormal affinity with thunderstorms. And furthermore, for reasons undisclosed, the scientist that heralded the experiments played a pivotal role in the creation of the aforementioned 'Lexas'. Androids, perhaps? Mulling it over as he did, the swordsman was still fully aware that there weren't any available means to verify his guesses, so he fashioned himself a scarce presence - after all, any visible tension that might've lingered around felt thinly drawn, barely there, establishing an atmospheric illusion that felt scenic at best.

Especially then, in particular, after a smile briefly held purchase on his lips once he'd seen the raindrops cascading off a curved structure above them, though not even a squint could distinguish what was exactly keeping them dry. There'd be a faint magical pulse that was only ever detectable with diligent focus, but without tangibility, he could only assume that it was someone else's handiwork. No harm done, he thinks, for the invisible 'umbrella' served as a temporary repose from one of the several problems that they were more than likely to encounter there, nestled between the island's overgrowth and heavy foreboding.

    'If I remember correctly-...'

Didn't the job's description mention...various beasts that already ran amuck? Surely, since his short-term wasn't as faulty as his long-term memory, the swordsman couldn't easily discredit the thought. Whether or not it was a self-proclaimed responsibility, the threat of an attack still demanded an awareness that was nothing short of refined. However, to act on this lingering suspicion of his would be unbecoming, and was perhaps better reserved for when the time when an actual threat came to intercept their little stroll.

At his waist, the swordman's pale-knuckled grip goes slack with his own prompting, the placid expression that currently overrode his facial features coming to betray the short instance of surprise that overtook him from the action. Had he impulsively reached for Kushinada amidst his thoughts? It wasn't unlikely, but it was more than unnerving.

'I don't mind the distance since I'm used to walking a lot but...' he sighed, 'Hum, I need to calm down.'

    'Seconded~'

    'Oh, you're awake.'

The spirit's voice wavers in a fatigued manner as he bore a yawn, but there was a smile lingering on his transparent form once he spoke, 'The sound of your excessive worrying isn't exactly the most soothing of lullabies but yes, good afternoon to you too~'

Torian wouldn't doubt the pointlessness of sleeping after death, but the Origin's choice to take rest every once in a while was still a vexing one. Its purpose eluded him, but there was no meaning to the thought process that wanted to uncover things concerning the spirit, only because every single question never leads to a straight answer. Such is the nature of ancient folk, he thinks, an existence that complicates the more you age.

'There's a palpable sense of hostility inhabiting this island...' the spirit mused, its essence expanding in a make-shift stretch, 'Curious.'

If it were anyone else, it'd been easy to dismiss the half-hearted attempt at a warning that the spirit left hanging there. But he was neither an outsider nor a stranger to the whimsies of this peculiar old man that just so happened to lodge far too deeply into corners of his mind. He was, for a lack of a better word, accustomed to how things were said between them - indirect, and disguised. Asking why was no longer an option after some time, and no one seemed to mind at that point.

'...Seconded.' he said, deftly easing the Etherblade from its scabbard, inch by careful inch, 'Didn't think we'd make it to the other-side of the island without a hitch, anyway.'

Down the path they currently took appeared to be a dark, ominous dust cloud briskly hurdling towards them, the speed at which the object moved slightly intimidating. A rhythmic noise akin to galloping rumbled steadily from across the road, bringing with them the tremors of a thunder storm.

His expression all but tightens - "Horses..."

They would continue to trudge along the soaked gravel road, shoes squelching in the wet, muddy material as they ate up the path, slowly, slowly moving towards the destination. The Lexas would occasionally point out an indigenous plant or animal, and Sorano would perform the best imitation of small talk that her emotionless personality could muster up. It was frankly a lot more boring than both Fairies had expected, being on so mysterious and potentially dangerous as this island was. As such, the letter mage would have plenty of time to think and observe her surroundings, dark eyes taking in the rain-drizzled terrain and the ghostly trees that towered above their heads. Ah – so that was it. Realizing what the cause of her caution was, Sorano glanced back at the swordsman. His aura as dark as ever, the man hadn’t spoken a word since they had begun to move, instead staying in the back with a saddened expression on his face. What could be bothering him? Perhaps she had said something insensitive again? But how? Hoshi hadn’t offered a single indication of the guild master having said something disagreeable with social norms of the country or profession – maybe it had been something that one of the blondes walking in front of her had said to trigger the dark expressions upon Torian’s face.

At the very least, the man seemed to be listening. The concentrated focus of his eyes and steady movements suggested he was accustomed to such setups. Maybe his talents and abilities were based around observational skills our strategizing – the man was still very much a mystery to the letter mage and her companion, even more so than the clones, which really was quite an accomplishment. She barely knew Lexa at all, besides the fact that the girl had a pretty messed up past. “You mentioned there were dangerous mutated creatures on the island, didn’t you Miss Grimoire?” It was a silly sight, watching as both girls turned around, frowned at one another, then both tried to respond to the letter mage at once. Finally, kimono Lexa spoke up in a clam, firm tone. “Yeah. The experiments caused the natural life here to change, becoming rather dangerous. In fact, I’m pretty surprised we haven’t encountered any yet. They’ve been targeting mostly humans lately on their rampages, so keep your guard up.” The matter-of-fact manner in which the girl released her statement suggested experience with these creatures, a casual nonchalance in her nature that proved her confidence.

Well, if their clients had nothing to worry about, Sorano wouldn’t fuss over it either. Checking on Hoshi, the exceed would express her own feelings with a quick smile. “I got this, don’t worry about me.” The request would be readily accepted by a Sorano that would be proud if she possessed the ability to be so, and she glanced towards the back. For once, Torian appeared to be rather absent, eyes looking forward but mind seeming elsewhere. How peculiar – perhaps it had to do with the entangled auras with his? It was a common phenomenon for mages she encountered, but still piqued her interest every time.

Sorano would find herself getting lost in her own train of thought as well, looking down at her shoes – stained a gloomy brownish-gray from mud on the trail – before she was abruptly pulled from her thoughts by sudden sharp thundering sounds, pulling her to attention. A dark cloud of flashing manes, bared teeth and flying dust hurtled at them from ahead, breaking through the sheets of rain to get at them with fury in their eyes. As it drew closer, the separate clipping sounds of hooves clattering against gravel made itself clear to the letter mage. With almost no time to spare, Sorano pulled forth an invisible shield before herself and Hoshi, protecting them from the sudden barrage of hooves. It would disintegrate quickly under the immense pressure, but gave them enough time to move off the trail, separating to make pursuit more difficult for the mutants.

The Lexas she hadn’t spared even a second to worry about, however. From experience, she knew the first Lexa to be an experienced fighter, with physical abilities that far surpassed her own. With her observations in this particular battle, it appeared that her clone had been designed with the very same abilities, the two disappearing and reappearing on either side of the path, circuits flashing a furious blue. With the ease of long practice, Lexa-A pushed herself off into the air, sending a streak of blue lightning down at one of the trio of horses, causing it to move towards her a haunting whinnying. Lexa-B would follow as well, teleporting every few steps to situate herself in a more advantageous position to attack the angered creature. “You guys handle the other two – don’t worry about us!” she called in an almost cheerful manner, before sending a powerful kick at her opponent.

Sorano spared a quick glance over at Torian, hoping he could put that sword to good use here, before moving into action herself. With abnormally weak physical abilities for her profession, the letter mage depended almost completely on her magic in situations like these. After all, such creatures could not be negotiated with. Hoshi’s call brought her attention upwards, where the exceed’s Aera revealed twin feathered wings that brought the tabby down to Sorano’s level, pulling her into the air. Having a higher vantage would provide them with a clear advantage over the grounded horse that screamed and groaned up at the sky, dismayed at the loss of its target.

The letter mage extracted a long arrow from the mirror stitched into her sleeve, and retrieved the bow from a similar construct, attached to her hip. Although close-ranged combat was uncomfortable for her, she’d practiced archery since a rather young age and was skilled enough in wielding the long weapon. Pulling the rough string back, she snapped the now-glowing arrow into place before releasing it for a relatively clean shot. Good enough to pass. The arrow lodged itself within the horse’s side, freezing it in place through the weapon’s manipulation of natural energies around them. “Nice job, Sorano.” The addressed would respond with a quick nod before they dropped at dizzying speeds, bow quickly tucked back into the mirror. The frozen beast would now be easy to put out of its misery render unconscious – the letter mage preferred not to kill unless completely necessary, so the magicking of a rock to drop upon the horse’s skull would be more than enough to cease the problem. “Alright, let’s see how the others are doing.”

Eyes would travel to where the Lexas had easily felled their own horse, Lexa-A’s blue lightning circuits easily wrangling the beast to the ground after being weakened by Lexa-B’s versatile teleportation tactics. Although Lexa-B didn’t seem to be anywhere as powerful as Lexa-A in terms of magic, her technique in utilizing it made her a formidable foe – the disappearing and reappearing act effectively disoriented the creature as she launched attack after attack in a practiced pattern, the clones weaving in and out of each other in a deadly dance of martial arts and magic. Although Lexa-A had lost her memory, it was obvious her skills were still sharp and in shape. As for Torian…

Sorano turned to look at how the swordsman was faring, wondering if she should lend her own hand in help. The beast had been rather easily defeated, but you never knew with new partners…
