Post by Ahote 10th December 2017, 5:32 pm

Dirty, stone floors and rusty, dry iron bars in a corridor of dozens of empty cells. It had been a long, noisy day to the boy, but only silence and the tapping of a mouse's toes against stone settled in the dungeons of Basilisk Fang, a deep and dark place where the enemies and rebellious characters would go to rot. It smelled terrible and hadn't been cleaned in what seemed to be eons. There were times that the raven haired youth had come down to these depths and tried to scrub the place spotless, but to no avail. The dirt and grime seemed to be embedded in the walls and floor, so the boy eventually gave up and returned to his normal activities.

Normally, the boy never bothered going down to the dungeons. But today was different, a very special occasion had occurred just hours before the boy had even thought of wandering the halls of the Basilisk dungeons. He had come across a crimson haired woman with pale, white skin and dark eyes which seemed to be a deep, dark red. That of blood, he assumed. Katherine was her name, and the events that unfolded upon Ahote saving her from a vicious ruffian descended into conflict and violence. The boy and woman had exchanged hurtful words and even more hurtful blows, ending in an unconscious girl and an upset youth.

Hours had passed, and Katherine did not so much as peep in his state of unconsciousness. Just before he had carried her into the dungeons, servants greeted him with worry, only to be told that when Famine was to arrive at the fortress that they tell her that Ahote had requested her presence by her cell.

With time to kill and the only company he had being an unconscious girl, Ahote found ways to occupy himself while waiting for her awakening. First, the boy had prepared soap and water along with a rag to scrub her clean of dirt and blood that may have settled over time, undressing her up to her undergarments, unveiling an array of scars and marks that stunned the boy. Instantly after discovering them, questions soon followed. Where did they come from? How did she get them? Is she still effected by them? Questions that would not be answered now or in the near future, it seemed.

Secondly, Ahote had fixed her a change of clothes from his own wardrobe. Consisting of a long sleeved, beige shirt and black, baggy sweatpants. He was sure that they would fit considering they were similar in size. Worst case scenario, they were too big.

Lastly, Ahote had taken about half an hour to prepare her a warm and comforting meal for her to eat when she woke up. A thick, rich corn chowder with slices of whole grain bread, water, and an apple, of course. You always needed fruit in your diet. With bringing the food and setting it by her body, he also brought a first aid kit with disinfectant and cotton balls, but decided not to treat her until she came to.

Over two hours had passed, and Katherine still hadn't woken up from her state of being. With a blanket wrapped snugly around her as she laid limp in a locked cell, Ahote sat on a wooden stool on the opposite side, watching, thinking. I don't know what to do with her,
really. Maybe asking Mom to come here wasn't the best of ideas, since it was Mom that she wanted to meet so badly. If she woke up to us both, I imagine she'd lose herself. . . and I'd hate to have another incident.
Ahote pondered, but it seemed as if he quickly found himself drifting into darker thoughts. What am I doing? Killed a guy, hit a girl.
. . not pleased with what I've done. I should apologize when she wakes up. But am I really so soulless? I don't think so. . . I'd like to believe that I'm pretty. . . kind, comparatively speaking.
Maybe not in that moment, but me killing the brute left me pretty. . . jaded. Detached, maybe.
Maybe if that didn't happen, things would've gone differently. Hm. . . I hope she's alright,
    none the less.
The boy sat in the dimly lit corridor of the dungeon, staring in the darkness of the cell with he and the silence.

Die A Hero, Or Live Long Enough To See Yourself Become The Villain

In the blizzard there was no way to know which direction to go, the usual landmarks of the hakobe settlements were hidden behind the white that swirled so densely. Even the stone fortress which Famine was approaching was a crude outline of a structure mostly erased by the storm. The soft crystals one would have found so bewitching from the other side of a pane glass, found their way into the mages hood which had since been blown down to her shoulders. They packed down her neck and between the fabric. She could feel her blood cool and her skin become icy. Though, even in the presence of life-threatening cold she did not waver or feel distressed in the presence of the snow storm. Disorientation was a given, but this could never hope to kill her. Eventually, she reached the doors, pressed her shoulders to them and pushed them in, the hinges spraying pieces of broken ice.

The returning guild master didn’t even have a moment to shake the frost out of her hair before one of the servants Sol had employed to help them manage the guild pulled her aside to be sure that Famine received the word as soon as she stepped in the fortress, solid iron doors slamming behind her to shut out the storm.

Her son’s name came up- And it only took her an instance to nudge past the messenger and track snow inside. She turned at the steps and made her descent into the fortress’ infamous holding space. Narrowed eyes shifted back and forth in the murkiness as though scouting before each step until she came through a stone tunnel so deeply burrowed in the recess of the mountain that walking down the dungeon hall felt like wading through a pond that had been covered in ice. While any who remained in this place too long would tremble or shiver. Famine, who could venture down this mountain sleeveless and barefoot, would not so much as wonder about frostbite. Her attitude wasn't the only reason she was referred to as ice cold.

Sure enough, the seer spotted her boy halfway down the dungeon corridor and peering into a cell. “Ahote,” came her call. She quickened her pace down the inauspicious passage where even the most delicate of her footfalls drew echoes alongside her voice.

Even when the witch reached Ahote’s side, his eyes seemed locked on the barred cubicle. The prison cell was barely six feet by four. It’s walls were the same thick grey stones as the rest of the fortress, but instead of a wide window with a flower box there was a mean barred opening with thick metal poles and no glass. In the mountain’s permanent winter the cold let in a wicked draft and reduced the temperature to near freezing. It was for the promotion of an unwelcoming atmosphere here that each torch was placed far apart. So inside the cell, It was no brighter than the gathering gloom of dusk, even at midday. There was no mattress. Only a piling of straw which smelt of mildew and only one thin blanket that had been wrapped around the crimson haired doll. The dungeons beneath the Guildhall were either suffocatingly quiet or pierced with the screams of an inmate. Today, there were no remaining prisoners of war. Save for the quiet one in the cell Ahote was standing in front of. --But Famine could not recall this girl ever arriving.

What was Ahote doing down here? who had jailed the girl in the cell? --And what was that on his face?

Famine’s hands, as they always had been, were ice cold when they cupped Ahote’s chin and delicately turned his nose to a torch slightly so to cast a clearer light on his features. Sure enough, the darker patch left of his mouth was not a trick of the poor lit passage. “Is that a bruise, Ahote?” Famine inquired, furrowing a brow.

There were so many more questions, though the maternal side of her couldn't help but let that be the first one she asked. A hand remained placed upon his shoulder and at his jaw, eyes flickering between him and the dormant form sitting on the cell floor.  Just by looking into the shines of his eyes Famine could see that there was a lot on his mind.

“What is all of this about? The serfs couldn’t tell me much-- just that you’d wanted me down here immediately.”

    A Phoenix's Broken Wings [Katherine's Intro/Ahote/Famine] Empty Re: A Phoenix's Broken Wings [Katherine's Intro/Ahote/Famine]

Post by Ahote 11th December 2017, 3:25 pm

The familiar soft but strong tapping of Famine's feet became apparent deep within the dungeons, home to various inmates who would rot there. Ahote did not greet his mother with his usual fluffiness this time, the soft flicker of light in his eyes now nothing but a still calm. The boy often descended into this state when he thought of troubling things. He turned to face his mother in silence, only a weak smile and sad eyes greeting her.

But it seemed that Famine also had the same idea in mind when greeting her child, cold, rough hands cupping Ahote's pale, white cheeks and adjusting his gaze to the dim light for his bruising. Ahote instantly pulled away from her grasp, not wanting to draw attention to it. With metal fingers, the boy covered the purple mark. "No. . . well, yeah. People get bruises. Don't worry about it, okay?" Ahote insisted nervously, always getting fidgety when he lied. Even so, he didn't lie, he simply did not tell her the reason behind the bruise, figuring that she would take out any festering anger on Katherine, the prisoner.

He turned back to face the unconscious, crimson locked girl who would lie on the stone floors, nearly naked. The lasting shock of the early day's events haunting him for what he thought would be hours to come. More importantly, Katherine's harsh words and the murder had left him questioning his own self. I defended myself and my guest. I told him not to hit me, but he did. And I don't regret that, but. . . but am I really. . . so terrible? My judgement was just and reasonable, although I did not mean to kill him. . . to make him go through that pain. . . He pondered. Was he so soulless? Was he so evil? And if he was, was he alright with that? Ahote didn't feel as disturbed or as panicked as he would've been before the Angus incident, and it seemed as if the boy had gotten so used to negative thought.

"I'll. . . I'll just get straight to the point," Ahote began, continuing to gaze into the darkness of the cell, "I found this girl a couple of hours ago being assaulted by a settler. I asked him to release her, and he refused and instead attempted to attack me. . . I killed him. With those flames from long ago. He screamed a lot. . . he died." Ahote's voice became colder as he spoke more of the details of the murder, his own thoughts pouring into his speech, it seemed. Realizing this, Ahote corrected himself and continued, "Anyway, I took her into a storage cabin and warmed her up. Her name's Katherine and she came on this mountain looking for you. Other things happened,
of course. But that's the gist of it. . ."
    He concluded.

There was something that he never quite got clarification on due to Katherine's outburst. The attack on Magnolia's water supply from Basilisk Fang? It wasn't a far-fetched idea, knowing what Basilisk Fang did. "And try not to wake her, would you, Mom? Granted,
    she's unconscious. . . but do try."
He insisted with a soft, dead voice.

    Total Apprehension

She was cold and stiff, and every part of her body ached terribly. She was laying on a hard surface, a floor of some kind, she had concluded. Searing pain shot through her skull and she groaned, her face scrunching into a grimace. She shifted and pushed her hands into the ground, trying weakly to lift herself up and instantly regretting it. As soon as she raised her head in the slightest, explosive pain coursed through it, temporarily blinding her good eye. Another groan escaped her lips, this time more agonizing and sounding like a whimper toward the end. The ebbing slowly, but surely, subsided and she could finally concentrate. Katherine learned quickly the reason for her shivering and gooseflesh riddled skin. She wore nothing but her underwear and a thin blanket, draped over her back. Gasping shrilly, she tugged the the fabric around her body, too quick perhaps because she winced at the movement. Her hair was obscuring her sight, and really she wouldn't have bothered to move had she not been so curious of her whereabouts. As she sat upright, she brushed her endless locks out of the way and froze at what she saw. The mage was too shocked to speak a single word and stared wide-eyed at the two people before her. She'd no idea what to do with herself, feeling nothing but the cold burning her knees as they pressed into the hard concrete.

On the other side of a set of rusting cell bars, sat Ahote and next to him was a woman she hadn't ever expected to actually see in her over-due lifetime. She was fair in hair and skin, with piercing blue eyes. Famine... She thought then that it would best to keep her scabbed lips shut. If she stayed calm then she wouldn't...she would most likely keep from being killed.
But what really was the point of that now anyway? She'd almost died twice in a matter of hours,
by lack of heat and the hand of a mouth-breather. Wait... Make that three... Katherine then recalled what had happened, God knows how long ago. The woman flushed bright red, embarrassed that she'd let him knock her out cold, and scowled. That bastard slammed my head into the table... That, she concluded, was why her head hurt so badly.

She could honestly not comprehend what had happened in those hours, but she knew that it had caused her heartache. She felt like crying, but she had no tears left. Not a single drop. All that consumed her was a silent rage that, visibly, was much less intense.

Post by Ahote 11th December 2017, 7:18 pm

Ahote sighed and stared at his toes, an unused first aid kit resting quietly and sealed next to his feet. The boy had wanted to take a shower, having being coated in a thin layer of sweat from earlier events in addition to hiking up Mt. Hakobe's steep mountainside with a larger, heavy girl on him. He was tired, and wanted to lay in bed with his thoughts, but by the time he had arrived home, he had other responsibilities.

Maybe I should've left her with the settlers, get her out of me and my Mom's lives.
And maybe it was a stupid idea, bringing her up here. God only knows what Father would've done to her. Probably try to break her into submitting to him, really. It's so predictable of him. But what of Mom?
Ahote thought to himself. It seemed as if things only ever seemed to descend further into chaos since coming here to Basilisk Fang. There was a time where Ahote felt happy, and had no worries, thought thoughts fitting for a child. But that time had come and went, and nothing good ever seemed to come from it. He couldn't rely on Famine to make him happy, not his father, not even Yuiisai. Even when surrounded with family, he never felt so alone with himself and his thoughts. The dark images in his head became like home, and the smallest happy moments felt like a shock. But what was happiness? When Ahote saw other families, eating meals together, talking, laughing, loving, he thought as if something was missing. Something was wrong with his own. But never had he felt so content with his isolation, his parents, his companions. There were times, often times, that he felt fluffy and light in the chest, and would be all giddy and fidgety when they were so much as mentioned. Was that happiness? Ahote brooded over it on a regular basis.

Suddenly, strained moans and groans emitted from the opposite side of the cell. Surprised, Ahote lifted his head to find a disoriented and wakened Katherine. With a quick, weak smile, the raven haired boy spoke quietly, "Afternoon, sleepyhead." he started, "Before you say or do anything, you should probably get dressed. Look, right there, I laid out some clothes for you. . . and some food. I worked hard to make it, so eat it before it gets too cold." Ahote insisted, looking down to grab the handle of the first aid kit and placed it forward, "And you might have a concussion, so try not to scream. It'll hurt your head and it'll hurt our ears. I can disinfect the wound whenever you're ready." Ahote continued to ramble on with a somewhat eager voice, for a moment.

Die A Hero, Or Live Long Enough To See Yourself Become The Villain

Without turning a blind ear to Ahote or the Prisoner, Katherine as Ahote told her, Famine checked quickly that the cell gate was secured, and found the key which Ahote had hung back upon the wall and pocketed it herself. Azure eyes skimmed the girl on the dingy floor, and a low grunt escaped the basilisk’s chest. Ahote had neglected to take advantage of any of the magic-nullifying cuffs they kept. Famine just rolled her eyes and turn away from the cell, gazing between the torches. She thought she told him how dangerous it was to underestimate a person a thousand times now, for the safety of him and the guild. --She would say nothing, the complete crash course of dark guild safety was a lesson for another day. The witch only hoped the girl was either smart enough to not retaliate or too weak. Both and Famine would be in luck.

Ahote had already admitted how he dragged a stranger off the street and into her Guildhall, some cuffs were just a molehill next to a mountain. Ahote was growing up, and getting accustomed to her system… Even though, she hated to exhibit the caution and cruelty she would've to any other threat to her guild. “Ahote,” Famine breathed, and her breath frosted the air in front of her eyes.

The inmate stirred and Ahote seemed to perk up at this like a cat waiting outside of a mousehole. Though she loves his incentive, Once Famine saw him sit up from the stool and pace around in front of the cell she placed a hand back on his shoulder, turning him slightly askew from Katherine on the other side of the bars so to stop him from stepping too close. Abruptly, she winced like there had been static when she touched his shirt. --She thought she was hearing a conversation from underwater in her head. The image of a lit hearth in a dim cabin taped itself to the inside of her eyelids.

Past, Present, Future. The visions were routine. Typical, as the reign of Grim Heresy, began to subside. The more power that Sin sucked up the more she seemed to retain from her teachings with Eris. One would think the wishes you got from a contract with the devil would weaken after such strain. Hell was backward and they strengthened.

Famine stepped back from Ahote subtly and paced to the stone furnace at the wall just on the outside of the cell, She popped a torch off the wall and used it to ignite the coals, Probably too warm up Ahote who’d could have been down here hours in advance.

The brunette, hoping she hadn’t lost Ahote’s attention over the prisoner, whose grunts were hardly anything more than an annoyance to her, spoke up again. “Thankfully you didn’t get hurt, we know how hard that magic is on you…” She started a little mournfully, placing the torch back on the wall. She looked over her shoulder back at her son with her icy hues. He was getting taller every day...“I didn’t think you’d be bringing girls back home so soon though, Ahote,” She smiled the words, though that sinister undertone of hers remained as it always did. “And with such a nice sized goose-egg, did the settlers do that?” She jabbed a little at Ahote who was so cute when he got flustered, knowing full well of her son’s body language that it wasn’t what happened. The maker mage could see them leaving a bruise or two if Ahote jumped in a scuffle but Katherine woke up looking like she’d gotten smacked up close and personal. And the scars on her back? She doubted so, but she truly did hope that Ahote would reach malicious ability to inflict those kinds of permanent wounds one day. He’d not have to grow up being afraid of anyone.

    Observed

The ancient mage listened, annoyed albiet, to the boy. Food and clothes he'd said. She looked at the floor, and sure enough, there it was. She hadn't noticed before, much too distracted by the scowling woman across from her. Katherine did as he'd said and better, not speaking a single word. She reached for the clothes absently, gripping the blanket tightly with her other hand, and kept her eye on the two outside of her reach. Slowly she let the cloth slide off her shoulders and onto the floor. She regretted it immediately, stunned and feeling the energy leak out of her from the cold wrapping its icy fingers around her bare body. She caved in on herself, trying hard to retain whatever warmth she could and failing miserably. If she didn't want to go comatose again, she'd need to dress quickly, but without jarring herself too much to save herself from a worse headache. As the red-head pulled on the pair of black sweatpants, she felt eyes on her and hunched self-conciously. Her scar riddled back was out in the open and it made her feel vulnerable, just as they had when the wounds were still fresh. Her hands shook when she pulled the long-sleeve over her head.

Katherine stood up then, still facing away from the two that watched her. She ignored the bowl at her feet even though she was starving at this point, she'd lost her appetite due to the cold. The clothes helped, but it still wasn't enough. Pulling her long hair out from its capture beneath the shirt, she turned around to face them with dead eyes. Ahote held a first aid kit and informed her that she might have a concussion. It didn't matter much though, if she really wanted to she could just-

Shit, I'm too cold... Her inability to use her magic was annoying, but not as much as the concussion itself. She would have to let the boy treat her, seeing as she didn't have any other options. She was about to reach out, but Famine's voice stopped her. She was speaking to Ahote...playfully? What was that about? The woman got around to something that urged Katherine to finally open her mouth.

    "...did the settlers do that?"

Katherine stared at Famine directly, blankly. Standing at the bars, mere inches away, she said,

"Not them." She looked over to Ahote then, with an expression of pure irritation. "Him."

    A Phoenix's Broken Wings [Katherine's Intro/Ahote/Famine] Empty Re: A Phoenix's Broken Wings [Katherine's Intro/Ahote/Famine]

Post by Ahote 13th December 2017, 7:18 am

As Famine paced about, lighting the nearby fireplace just on the opposite side of the boy, Ahote rambled into the cell little nothings. Questions about the clothes, questions about the food, clever comments of bedhead. It was not every day he got to talk to people like this, even if they did hold contempt for him and remained silent. It was almost therapeutic for him. But before he could get too excited, approaching the cell with little guard up, Famine had taken hold of his shoulder, briefly turning him away from the idle Katherine.

Instantly, Ahote recalled Famine's lectures and ramblings about securing people like this. Words didn't need to be said to understand that his mother was looking out for him. But with a woman so harmless, it was hard to believe that she needed to be restrained to such an extent. She already had a concussion and didn't need any sort of fancy magic to be knocked out cold, after all. Famine quietly let go and stepped back, Ahote stepping back with her and back to his stool. He quickly felt the heat from the hearth tickle his nearly frozen back, a temperature that the raven haired youth had grown used to. The edge of his ears and tips of his nose became red, flushed with blood at the sudden temperature change.

Upon his mother's usual icy tone, Ahote turned to face her with a soft smile, looking back down at his metal arm. "Live and learn, right? Heh-heh." he snickered, looking back over to Katherine. Now that he thought about it, she cast a magic of similar properties during his time with her, even if it were only a brief moment. Fire, or something of that substance. He never thought to bring it up since there were more important questions to ask at that moment, but it was a qualm that never let up in the back of his head. Even now, he decided not to bring it up. Abruptly, Famine suddenly made a comment that made his nose and ears redder than before, twiddling his fingers together anxiously, "I didn't bring a girl home! It's not even like that! She's more like.
    . ."
Ahote stammered, looking back at Katherine before puffing out his chest and looking away from them both with an expression of confusion and embarrassment, ". .
. never mind! And the settlers? Well. . ."
Ahote quipped, wondering how he should exactly answer the question, joke or not. But before he could do so, a new and quiet voice became present in the conversation between mother and son. Shocked, the raven haired boy turned to discover the crimson haired woman on her feet, close, far too close to the cell bars, confessing what Ahote had done.

Ahote droned with furrowed brows, tapping his foot on the ground restlessly. Her unadulterated irritation radiated off of her, to a point where the boy could nearly feel it pressure against his chest. Perhaps those magic-nullifying handcuffs were a better idea than Ahote had initially thought. With a long, weary sigh, Ahote looked back at Katherine, "I'm glad you're well enough to speak, at least. . ."

Die A Hero, Or Live Long Enough To See Yourself Become The Villain

A sinister, although soft, smile curled the witches lip and she swept some of his raven locks behind his ear before giving it a pinch. “You know I was just jesting, though, It has been quite some time since I’ve seen this much color on your face.” she smirked to Ahote. At least this was a present sigh of his good health. She pulled an arm under his and pulled him closer to her when his captive arrived at the cage bars and released her grip shortly after she led him back a step-- as though she was expecting her to reach out and claw at Ahote like an animal.

It was clear she wasn’t all too pleased with Ahote, especially with how she interjected

Famine inhaled abruptly,  gently releasing Ahote’s ear to lift fingers to her lip as she released an amused laugh. Of course, Famine knew a share of the captive’s wounds was her son’s doing. All this time, Famine had slowly watched the natural process of him lose his grip and give into malevolent tendencies. As if she needed this…Katherine to answer something she already full and well known.

“I could of gone without her ability to speak back,” Famine said in a response to Ahote, blinking between her son to the bitch behind bars.

She broke any sort of a gaze then and there “Anyways,” Famine began with a  stride apart from Ahote and by the furnace against the opposing wall that was already emitting a slight warmth now. “ You understand there are only two options when it comes to guests, Ahote. You’ve grown up here  and despite how much I’d tried to shelter you i'm sure you’ve heard things... Seen it.”

Famine plucked up a rusted knife that had been set atop the furnace and a branding rod propped against it and the wall. She tactfully turned back to him and held both hands out to him, The choice was his: one of her hands gripped the switchblade, the other a metal rod which at the end held a shaped picture of the basilisk head. The iron emblem, which would turn red hot after placing it in the flames just behind her

For the safety of her guild Famine knew which choice she would make personally. It was always easiest to get rid of someone over changing them, how they thought, what they wanted, what they could do.

But-- this wouldn’t be her choice. Ahote needed to learn to make the tough decisions

    A Phoenix's Broken Wings [Katherine's Intro/Ahote/Famine] Empty Re: A Phoenix's Broken Wings [Katherine's Intro/Ahote/Famine]

Post by Ahote 18th December 2017, 4:26 pm

It was clear that his mother was no more pleased with Katherine’s words than he was, which was comforting in knowing that his feelings about his prisoner were mutual with such an important character in his life.

Ahote stood close to Famine, the two at a reasonably safe distance from the cell. The boy was no more frightened of her than he was of bird, but clearly his mother was taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of them both. The raven haired youth sighed, running his fleshed fingers through his threads, ”I didn’t actually know what to do with her after our incident. It was probably a better idea to take her out of the settlement, off the mountain. . .” Ahote mumbled, speaking to himself. Though it seemed that his train of thought was cut short when Famine presented the inevitable choice he’d have to make.

Ahote’s topaz hues reviewed his options: a red hot, long, iron rod with the crest of Basilisk Fang at the bottom and a rusty dagger. He knew well what his mother would’ve chosen, and to an extensive degree he would’ve chosen the same. He knew that he, his guild, his family, his everything would be better off without an unstable piece of garbage wandering about their home. He knew this, but even so, he still reached out to grab the branding rod, eyes never leaving Famine’s.

”Yes,” he whispered, ”I understand.” Ahote lifted the branding rod from Famine’s icy palms, turning back to face Katherine on the other side of the cell. Cautiously, he made way inside the cell with the rod held close to his side. His eyes flickered with light, an intense determination reflecting from his hues.

”Katherine,” Ahote began quietly, ”I want you to know that you’re worthless. If you disappeared today, no one would turn the other cheek. No one would care, no one would notice you were even gone. Judging by your behavior, the world is better off without you. An unstable, broken fool who treats people the way you treated me despite my hospitality, despite my kindness.” he explained, slowly walking over to the red haired broad with the heat of the branding rod itching closer, ”Even equipped with magic, I was able to outdo you with physical brawn alone. You’re both useless in a field of combat and social interactions. It’s better if we just kill you, knowing what you know. Seeing what you’ve seen.” He continued, making way over to her, no less than an arm’s length away, holding the burning crest close to her left side, ”However, despite all of these truths, despite how little you are, I trust that you can grow into something magnificent. Something glorious. Broken things can be fixed if given the right tools, and with the right things, they’ll be even stronger than before. This crest is everything to me. I’ve been given every opportunity to kill you, Katherine, and I chose not to. I chose to turn the other cheek and provide you with a life full of meaning than no life at all. You are far too broken and warped to make these sort of decisions for yourself, so I’ll decide what you’ll spend your life doing. It’s what you owe me. Now, I’m sorry for rambling. . .” Ahote concluded, digging his fleshed fingers into her left shoulder, pressing the burning metal against her ribs on the same side.

The raven haired youth could smell the foul scent of the metal roasting the scarred flesh of Katherine, a small he was all too familiar with. Honestly, why must they use such a terribly gross method of branding? Traditionally, it is done painlessly and effortlessly, but sadly she would not have that luxury.

The branding rod retreating from the roasted flesh, now in the shape of the Basilisk head, ”Do not disappoint me.” He grumbled, looking at her one last time before returning to his mother on the other side of the cell with red ears and a flushed nose, a common appearance when he was excited or nervous. His eyes twinkled as if they were saying “Did I do good?” or “Are you proud of me?”, something of that sort.

Ahote looked down at his hands with an indifferent expression. Silently, he balled them up, shaking nervously, This. . . this feels. . . satisfying. . . I. . . she. . . I can't believe I said that to her! Could I really kill her?! I bet I could. . . the first two times were just.
. . special occasions. But am I really going to be able to kill people like that? Am I? If. . . if they impede on my family or I, it's fine to do anything possible to rid of them. . . but. . . could I. . .
    . .
Ahote's heart raced in deep thought. He felt himself become restless in the thought of killing, but became nearly unable to stand in the thought of not being able to do it.

    A Phoenix's Broken Wings [Katherine's Intro/Ahote/Famine] Empty Re: A Phoenix's Broken Wings [Katherine's Intro/Ahote/Famine]

Post by KatherineNeel 18th December 2017, 6:33 pm

    A Lone Shred

Katherine’s blood turned to ice in her veins. Fearful and shaken, the mage stumbled back from her stance at the cell bars. Famine had given Ahote a choice, and she didn’t need an explanation to know what the woman meant for him to do. Once again, her mind was clouded and her head felt thick, throbbing and pulsing. This time was not because of the concussion. She held her breath, or rather took them in short and shallow. She couldn’t move and stood weakly, her sight blurring heavily until all she could see with her right eye were blobs of darkness.

What was he going to do? Was he going to kill her? If he was, previously she wouldn’t have minded, but now she thought… This is not how she wanted to die. Locked in a freezing, dirtied cell with very little of her sanity left. She wanted to end with dignity and respect if she could. Not in another person’s hand-me-downs and with a darkening bruise on her cheek at the hands of a boy she’d just met.

He was bad luck, that’s what it was. She had hoped he’d be the first good thing in her lowly life she’d had in a long time. It seemed that that wasn’t the case. Here she was, beaten down and locked up, watching him decide what to do with her. Branding or death, it’s up to the boy.

Katherine had lived much too long already and she would admit she’d wanted to take her life plenty of times. But this… He was right when he’d said she was too scared. She really was and now even more so because he might be the one to finally kill her.

She was surprised when he grabbed the rod over the knife. He was going to spare her, but she wasn't entirely sure if she would rather have this instead of death. He began to speak then, the same he had before when she punched him. He sauntered closer, and out of the corner of her eye she could see Famine; pleased.

He grabbed her shoulder, and where she sat the shirt she wore had been pushed up to expose her ribcage. She stared him in the eyes fearfully.

Katherine breathed heavily, almost hyperventilating as she anticipated the pain that was sure to come. Suddenly there was heat on her left side, and she fought the urge to look down. She tried to keep herself from making any noise or squirming in the slightest, but as she felt the spot get hotter and hotter she was consumed by her fear. She tried to pull away, but alas, she could not move an inch. All that left her mouth for a moment were whimpers through grit teeth. What came next was something she hadn’t wanted to hear escape her lips again for a very long time.

The hot iron pressed into her skin and she released the loudest, most blood-curdling scream she’d ever heard come out of anyone. Tears sprang to her eyes and for the first time in her life, she thought she might actually explode. She’d received many scars in her life, but never any for burns. This was adding to the list. She didn’t notice when the iron was removed or when she collapsed onto the floor. The pain of emanating from the burn wouldn’t let up and she kept screaming, though she tried desperately to keep her mouth shut and not satisfy him more than she already had. They eventually turned into hard sobs, which wracked her entire body relentlessly. She couldn’t breathe properly and she felt herself choking on her own saliva several times. The mage didn’t know what to do with herself, never feeling better with any position or movement she tried to ease the pain shooting through her flesh.

After what felt like an eternity, Katherine lay still on the cold cell floor, crying. She felt tired and weaker than she had before. The slightest shift in her chest when she took a breath made the burning sting nearly as bad as when she’d received it, and she grit her teeth so hard she thought they might crack.

She didn’t think this would heal. It was a burn, of course, much like the self-inflicted ones she’d had earlier that day. But this… this was a mark of ownership. Those cannot be erased. She belonged to them now. The thought of being an object of possession disgusted her, but she almost couldn't think through the burning of her entire body. Her blood, her heart,
her head; all of them set ablaze. At this moment she wished for rebirth, but she was much to weak to even try it.

Knowing she couldn't fight whatever was in store for her in the coming hours, days, months, maybe even years... She let herself settle into the cold floor. She shook, shivered, and cried silently with tightly clenched teeth and fists alike.

Post by Ahote 23rd December 2017, 12:44 pm

Topaz hues radiated their usual softness when they focused on Famine, awaiting her silent approval. His heartbeat raced as did his mind, racing even faster. The once heavy weight on his chest lifted into a satisfying lightness, leaving him only to deal with the remnants of adrenaline in his bloodstream.

Katherine's cries and screams rang in his ears, echoing throughout the halls. Any who'd lurk at this hour in these depths would be able to hear her pain as the metal, burning brand would sink into his skin like sand, roasting the flesh and replacing it with the mark of the Basilisk, a symbol of power and treachery. Ahote wore his proudly, as did his family.

With a soft smile, the raven haired boy turned to face their newest addition, "Congratulations, Katherine. You've been given an opportunity to serve a greater purpose. Seeing as you're one of us, now, there is no reason for me to keep you captive here in a place made only for traitors and the dangerous." he began, walking over to the cell and pulling the door open, "I will be nurturing you into something useful and will be supervising your progress. With someone like you, lots of discipline will be needed. . . so get up. You'll be staying with me."

    [End]
