Uncertainties [Exam]

As the sun's burning bright rays beat down on the concrete, the port town of Lavanitir seemed eerily calm today. There was an absence of the sound of wind, chatter of people in the markets nearby, and most businesses were closed for the day, overall contributing to the dead silence of the usually rowdy city. Overall, it made the entire town feel deserted, lost, even forgotten. It was this sense of unease that was burying itself within the Black Rose mage as she approached the dock. Each step she took in her high heels felt emphasized in her ears. The clacking sound slowly growing quieter the closer she got to the water. She felt her heart pounding trying to get out of her chest as with each step, she feels one step closer to walking away; to running away again. It was horrible. She wasn't even in site of the boat and she already felt like keeling over somewhere.

To recap, the Black Rose Guild Leader, a tanuki who is named Izayuki, sent her a letter, which seemed odd since it was only directed to her. Hikari did not know the guild master personally, so getting a request in this manner was somewhat surprising. Her hand traced over the sealed envelope as she opened it. Inside was a photo of a young girl and a captain by the looks of it. On the other side of the photo was a note that was attached. It briefly described what happened to the people in the photo. They were on a ship when it went missing, with the captain in the picture vanishing along with it. The guild had received notice that the girl, who was the captain's assistant has been spotted at Shadow Island. That was good and all, but why was Hikari being informed? Wouldn't it have been better for Master to send a more competent person. After all, the only way to get to Shadow Island...

was by boat. The reason Hikari, at this moment in time, is quaking within her boots. Her face has become pale as she feels fear consuming her as she glances at the ship with the Black Rose insignia engraved upon the hull of the vessel. Her hand went out to touch the symbol, as if wanting strength before recoiling backwards slightly. Just being close to the ship can send her spiraling down the road to home; a road that she hoped she would never have to see again. As she took her tiny steps onto the ship, she saw the clear, blue water underneath and calmed down. It may seem bleak right now. For gods sake, I may want to crawl and never come out of whatever hole I find myself in. But, I need to try, at the bare minimum: try. Master asked one thing of you, which was to get the assistant back and to rescue her. You do have to go on a ship, but you can do this. There is a reason she asked you. She believes in you. And you can't let this control you forever. So, baby steps. Carefully, the pink haired wizard walked onto the ship, as slowly as she could, as if she was worried she would accidentally startle the boat. Hikari stepped onto the boat, listening to the clacking sound of her heels against the wooden floors of the ship in order to distract herself from the distinct sound of her heartbeat ringing in her ears. She sighed in relief. She may have been far from fine but she still knows that she will be able to have an easier time at the moment. Now, to find the navigation system...

After an awkward amount of time, Hikari made her way around the ship and is found the navigation system within the ship. She doesn't know how to control a ship so it's really handy for something like this to help guide the ship to its destination. After all, the ship is controlled by magic. After entering the coordinates for Shadow Island, the girl opened the bag on her back, revealing a multitude of books. Old habits certainly die hard, and that's especially true with Hikari. She can't even get herself to drop one of her key characteristics that can be used to identify her. After deciding for a second, she decided on a book: a crime drama that was part of a trilogy. It had recently been released and was supposedly the finale to the book series. Knowing authors, this one might use the popularity to milk another one but that was a rant for another day. Hikari managed to get sucked into her book and about halfway through, she felt exhausted. She couldn't really sleep the night before because she was so paranoid about what was going to happen when she got on the boat. The thoughts and doubts seemingly erased from her mind as her eyes drifted shut, and she placed her head on the table, falling into a slumber as the waves slowly rocked the boat.

The holy mage felt a cold presence as she seemingly floated on air. The atmosphere was bright and felt very bubbly. It may have been cold but it didn't match the really light presence that the environment surrounding the girl gave out. After floating around for a little bit, she heard a thunderous crack. It shocked the girl as it was the loudest thing in this space and it reverberated within the area, hearing it echo as if Hikari was in a large corridor. She held her head in her hands as the environment started cracking, each crack letting out a stream of water. The wooden background was being broken and water was flooding in. Hikari was no longer floating, and she felt panic as the water continually rose. She was powerless to stop it, she couldn't use her magic and she couldn't move. She was useless. With one final crack from the apparent ceiling to this horrible scene, the water flood in, causing the mage to gasp underwater as her final breath left her body.

Jolting up from her slumber, Hikari took a moment, letting out each shuddering breath one after another. She was badly shaken up, and it was clear. The girl has had minimal sleep and eaten very little to avoid becoming sea sick. She wasn't sure if she was going to be able to prevent the latter from happening at this point too. Rubbing her eyes, she looked at the chart on the navigation system and saw that the ship was still a long way away from the island. Hikari sighed as she looked at this aquatic torture device surrounding her and decided that she needed some air. Stumbling after getting up for a second, the girl shakily made her way to the door. She opened it, only to be greeted with intense sunlight, causing a temporary squint as her eyes adjusted to the harsh light. She sighed as she walked over to the railing of the boat. Leaning against the side, the girl's pink locks flew in the wind as she watched as the boat traveled across the blue ocean. It wasn't bad from here. It almost felt like she was off the boat entirely, which honestly wouldn't be a bad thing in this case.

Sighing for the umpteenth time today, the girl decided that she should eat. After all, they were holding a girl hostage so, there definitely was going to be some fighting today. It's just a matter of when. When she walked around the boat earlier, she saw a mess hall and had saw a door that probably lead to the kitchen there. She made her way over to the mess hall and headed over to the open double door-ed room. She peeked her head in and saw that there was a kitchen. Master had said that the food had been restocked for this trip. So, when she scavenged the area for potential ingredients, she saw a surplus of high quality ingredients. The girl was shocked as she stepped back. She had never seen more expensive ingredients. Hikari was very tempted to make so many things with these ingredients and if she got in trouble, then preserve them for her master to try the food but despite every bone in her body, decided against it. She had to think about what kind of meal she needed to eat first. She need to make sure her body was properly fueled for battles ahead. With the wide array of ingredients, the safest option was a hearty stew. The girl made quick work of preparing the ingredients and placing them in the pot, with chicken broth. She set the burner of the stove on high and decided to sit in the mess hall while she waited. While walking, she heard the sound of metal hit the deck.

Deciding to be careful, she had prepared herself. She opened her palm, with glowed with a holy aura before dulling. She was ready for this. Hikari didn't want to beat around the bush and hide, so the minute she got the chance, she kicked the door to the main deck open. She was greeted by seeing 5 men, presumably pirates. They were very burly men and Hikari was a little bit intimidated. She scowled slightly when they attempted cat-calling her, asking her who else was on the ship, and very crude things. She smiled at them, menacingly, as she snapped her fingers with a ball of light appearing around her. The pirates sensed the magic and all charged at her. All brute? You heathens should learn how to fight. When they all leaped to get onto her, she disappeared in a flash of light. As the pirates ended up colliding into her, she reappeared in a flash above them, More importantly, how to properly approach a lady of my standing. She points downwards and five orbs of light materialize, launching themselves at blinding speeds at the enemy. They collided with the pirates as the other ball of light beside Hikari fired multiple orbs at the enemies hit. She smirked as she gracefully landed away from them. They were injured but were still eager to fight. As they charged once again, Hikari rolled her eyes at them. The holy mage held out her hand and a rapier materialized itself within her hand. She parried the first pirate's hit by hitting him with the hilt in the fist as he threw a straight punch. You really need to work on your form. It's quite sloppy. Smiling, the pink haired girl twirls with the sword fading into light and a shield materializing on her fore arm, blocking a punch from another pirate. The pirate winced as the punch made contact and Hikari kissed her teeth, similar to a mother calling out her son on poor table manners. This is fun and all, but I really have somewhere to be. She needed to get rid of these brutes soon so she intended to get rid of them now.

The girl sighed as she placed her hand forward and a rather large magical circle appeared. After a couple of seconds, she stretched her hand and a flock of birds appeared. The birds exploded upon making contact with the enemy. She smiled as some jumped off the boat to avoid the onslaught of birds. There was one pirate who managed to stand his ground but this one wasn't doing so hot as he was panting and was clearly struggling to stand. Hikari sighed as she summoned a lance and leaped at the pirate, twirling whilst in the air. When she reached him, she ended up piercing through his arm, missing her mark only slightly. Waving goodbye at the pirate as he stumbled to the railing, she kicked him off the ship when he reached the edge of the boat. She peeked over the edge as she saw the pirates, far behind the ship as it hadn't stopped once during that entire fight. She got rid of the hooks that enabled the pirates to scale the side of the ship. Good riddance. Now, I wonder if my stew is done. The girl happily walked her way over to the kitchen, eager to eat after a draining fight after dealing with people like that. Still time left until she gets to the island after all.

A couple of hours later, Hikari felt the boat come to a halt. She almost spilled her stew that she was eating, as she had been quietly reading while she ate and was more focused on the book than her food. She looked at the half eaten bowl of stew and sighed, I shouldn't waste too much. The girl quietly ate her soup, somewhat proud it turned out good. The meat had stewed well and the flavor was prominent while she ate. After she finished her meal, she focused as now she was in a potentially dangerous territory. The one's who kidnapped the assistant were on this island and considering they kidnapped her, they probably wouldn't be taken lightly. The holy mage was contemplating what to do while she cleaned her dishes within the kitchen sink. She glanced at the navigation system and the distance had her squinting. From what she could tell, it didn't look like the ship was at the island yet. But then, why was the ship at a complete halt? She dried her dishes and put them in their appropriate spots as she walked over to the cabin door. The boat was no longer moving but she still heard waves crashing underneath nearby. It was all very strange and Hikari was hoping that she ship wasn't sinking. She wasn't sure if she'd be able to handle it. With her quivering legs, she opened the door and shielded her eyes as they had been used to the comfortable darkness of the kitchen, while the sun still shone very intensely outside. Looking around, she didn't see any water. It was almost as though they were in the sky? When heading to the edge of the ship, Hikari felt a giant force in the boat and fell over from the sudden shake. This feeling of dread was eating away the back of Hikari's mind as she almost started hyperventilating. The ship was sinking, and she can't find her destination. After a brief delay, she saw something rising out of the water, that was a murky blue as opposed to the crystal clear blue earlier. The creature that was rising out of the water was shrouded as the water fell. It's sharp golden eyes pierced a glare through the holy mage as she used her magic to block the water from falling onto her. With a roar, the creature was ready to charge at Hikari.

A serpent. That was what nearly caused the girl to have a panic attack. A sea serpent. The girl's bangs shrouded her face as she felt herself summon a sword within her hand. Eyes trained toward her, the holy mage looked at the serpent menacingly. She didn't notice but the sea creature managed to flinch. With no mercy prominent in her eyes, she slashed the creature's long neck, as it winced back, screeching in pain. Hikari's eyes have gone cold with murderous intent which was something that wasn't common to the girl. She tapped into Athena's wisdom and her eyes glowed a deep gold for a moment before she sent the sword back to the vault. A burst of magic erupted from the girl, knocking various things back and within that, the girl summoned a spear. The spear was easily double her size but she still wielded it with ease. After a delay, the girl leaped towards the creature, who was still in pain from the former attack. She sliced it's eye, which remained shut after the mage landed. The serpent's veins glowed a pure gold as it was enveloped within tattoos. As according to what was expected, the dragon's defense was lowered as Hikari looked at the wounded sea serpent. When she dispelled the weapon, she got into a fighting stance, preparing to summon a weapon that she had recently perfected and created a spell for, she heard a voice, "Please! No more!" The girl looked around, brought out of her fighting trance, wondering where the source of the voice was coming from. She looked around aimlessly for a moment before stopping and staring at the giant sea creature. She deadpanned at it.

"Seriously? That's it?" The serpent explained that it was guarding the one's who kidnapped the assistant, now named Teila as the serpent had heard. The serpent was told that it was to simply watch because the sirens who had taken Teila claimed that she had murdered one of their elders. After Hikari clarified what truly happened, the serpent agreed to let her go to Shadow Island, due to the ill intent of the sirens. They simply kidnapped her for mastering the technique of creating plant based boats, when they couldn't even manage to do that. They intend to kill Teila as they were trying to get rid of all sources that were capable of creating them. Which as it turns out, the sirens were behind the captain to go missing as well. Hikari tightened her gloves, as the serpent took her boat to the island. With this in mind, the girl's eyes hardened, trained forward, ready to fight when she reaches her destination.

The sky slowly began to darken the closer the sea creature traveled towards the island. The wind blew as the serpent moved surprisingly quickly. Hikari sighed as she brushed a stray hair behind her ear. This entire mission has been needlessly stressing her out, so now with the destination being in close reach, all she needs to do is hold out for a little bit longer. The holy mage leaned against the rail of the boat as she saw the shoreline slowly engulfing the horizon. The sun was barely visible as it was close to dusk, which made it so that the sky was almost being engulfed in the color orange and purple. The girl felt the serpent come to a stop as it looked at her. She nodded as she created magic circles to act as stairs so that she could get onto the beach, as elegantly as possible. The sand felt foreign as while she technically was on solid ground, the sand didn't make it feel that way. The solid ground that she felt comfortable feels worlds away at this point. She grabbed a handful of the coarse matter and looked at it as it fell threw her fingertips. Hikari looked around at the area and her eyes narrowed in the direction of a sunken ship. Deciding it's time to hurry this up, she began to run and took a large leap forward. With a flash of gold light, feathers filled up the air as a pair of majestic wings stretched themselves out of Hikari's back as she flew towards the ship. It's just about time to finish this.

Hikari flew gracefully as she looked towards a spot in the sky above the sunken ship that had washed ashore from what appears to be a long time ago. She holds her palm to face the sky and with a brief delay, she tosses it forward and the orb breaks through the clouds, shimmering as it flies farther and farther away until it nothing more than a simple shimmer. Smiling as she flies closer towards the ship, she hears a faint voice. Being a bookworm, Hikari has read a lot of folklore detailing sirens and what they specialize in, relating to magic and battles. She quickly covers her ears as she summons a barrier around her. The barrier is distorting the sound, so the effects of the siren's songs will not be as potent. Upon reaching the ship's graveyard, she sees a small girl that is tied to a pole and is unconscious, but still breathing. Hikari's eyes begin to shimmer with gold as she looks closely at the areas surrounding the young girl and sees three sirens lying in wait. She flies down to the girl, being extra cautious and not putting her wings away. She doesn't free the girl quite yet as she places her hands on the ground and an area around the assistant glows with a vibrant gold. After some time, Hikari begins to unwrap the girl from her chains. Smiling as she hears the water move, she continues acting as though she hasn't heard it. This is the finale then.

After awkwardly struggling with her chains, Hikari groans as she simply summons a sword and slashes the chains until they are gone. After the chains are completely removed, Hikari hears a distinct splash and transfers her shield to the girl. Hikari turns her gaze to the side and sees two sirens leaping at her. She smiles as she flies upwards, leaving behind a gust of wind and a flurry of feathers. This causes the sirens to fall within their leaps and land on the ground. This causes the glow of the ground to intensify and roots to ensnare the two sirens. Smiling as this happens, Hikari still hears the distinct voice of another siren. She sighs as she thinks, This should be able to take care of it or at least reveal her location.. Snapping her fingers, the sky above the island changes to a gold color and after a few seconds of delay, the sky began to rain with weapons. The two ensnared sirens weren't able to last under the constant fire. They laid there afterwards not moving. After landing, Hikari was preparing to pick up the girl until she saw a siren leap at her. She wasn't fazed as the siren's dagger apparently hit her skin. The siren cackled as if it was able to defeat the holy mage, whose tolerance for today was gone at this point. Her Aegis shield blasted the siren back as she summoned a lance and impaled the siren's tail. She wasn't very amused as the siren screeched in pain. The siren tried to use it's dagger again and Hikari summoned a shield to block the attack. The sound of the shield meeting the dagger rung throughout the surrounding area as Hikari kicked the siren to the neck hard, knocking the creature out. Sighing, Hikari picked up the assistant and she decided to fly back home. The girl will probably wake up along the way, but the holy mage isn't really in a conversation mood anymore. Today has been a long day but it still has brough her closer in getting over her fear of boats. She's probably going to vent to Izayuki in order to get her back for making her do this mission.
