    Job:

"Don't you worry honey, Harry is just so anxious about getting this project moving along. He's actually quite kind..." The stout, middle-aged woman who was escorting Leah briskly through the halls of the facility seemed to be particularly driven when it came to persuading her to believe this fact. As the portly female trailed off with a dazed look in her eyes, the redhead concealed a crooked smile. It was clear that the research aide, well... in the simplest of terms, had at least a slight (and inappropriate, due to being boss and employee) crush on Dr. Geoss. On account of finding it rather endearing, considering that the elderly man was nearly blind and seemed to be almost senile as well, the mage refrained from making any deprecating comments about the snappish old man.

In all honesty, she probably wouldn't have, unless the woman straight out claimed that she hated her boss. But even that could have been a trick to gain... sympathy, or maybe incriminate her into a scheme to eliminate a need to pay the fiery haired girl. She may have been paranoid about her jewels, but it was still a reasonable worry. To Leah it was, at least.

Perhaps the mage actually had an ulterior motive for not wanting to rush the woman (whose name was... Una? Ulla? Something like that; the matronly assistant had introduced herself in such a spluttering blast of quick words that the redhead had been unable to clearly make out her name).

Post by Lacey Botticelli 23rd March 2017, 3:27 pm

After all, she was deathly afraid of the water. Bathtubs were okay (admittedly, she had freaked out before if the faucet was turned on under too high of pressure or if the tub was grand enough that it seemed to be a small pool) with a few exceptions. Rivers and streams were like a bolt of lightning straight to her brain: frying her ability to make any kind of decisions, Leah's only instinct was to get the hell outta there as soon as possible. As for ponds, or swimming pools, the terror was slightly less severe than with moving water (and the gap was even greater when it came to racing rapids or the like). She still hated them all with an equal passion, but her personal hatred had no affect on how much they unnerved her.

The greatest of all would always be fast-moving waters, like giant rivers that sweep away tons of dirt every second and can erode rock to the point of mile-high caverns and wide expanses of valleys. This was a close contest, though, for large bodies of the slick substance still set the hairs on her neck up to a high trigger as if she was about to be zapped with lightning. That would be a much quicker death than drowning, to be fair, if the current was powerful enough not to just influence her nervous system and send her body into convulsions. To have a fluid fill your lungs, to be stuck struggling for breath, to be inhaling something but that something was killing you...?

    Drowning was definitely the worst.

Post by Lacey Botticelli 23rd March 2017, 7:57 pm

Here she was, standing stick-straight with tension in what seemed to be every muscle of her body.  In front of her lay the never-ending ocean, sweeping across three fourths of the globe, to be exact.  And she would have to enter the water for this mission.

Her pattern of breath became jagged as she squinted at the shimmering waves that leaped gently across the surface, like little faeries dancing and pulling the tendrils of water with their hands.  It didn't look particularly foreboding, but dangerous things often never did and instead just struck when one's guard was let down.  With a suspicious narrowing of her eyes, Leah refused to entertain any possibility of that happening to her.  Turning to the woman ...Ulla?  Just going to go wi' Ulla then, not knowin' much better n' any other... Leah jerked her head impatiently in the direction of the water.

"So's like if ye be wantin' me to go innit, ye's best give me yer water breathin' magic orbs, dem lacrimas.  Otherwise I'd drown afore my job is done, not bein' a water mage n' all."  The last part was perhaps obvious enough (that humans drowned quickly and she wouldn't recover the treasure without dying first), but the redhead had felt the need to state it anyways; after all, how could the woman know what kind of magic she practiced?   Just because she didn't have gills didn't mean underwater breathing was impossible... but now she was contradicting herself.  With an abrupt shake of her head to clear her messy thoughts, Leah glanced pointedly at the hemp bag hanging over the worker's shoulder.

Post by Lacey Botticelli 23rd March 2017, 8:17 pm

Ulla stared back at her with a bit of interest, her eyes fixed on the scar from a... a 'wayward blade,' that had scored straight over her eye so many years ago. It had been miraculous that her sight was as good as it was to this day, but perhaps that could only be attributed to her genealogy. Having had many ancestors with supremely keen visual senses, Leah herself had taken after them at least a little bit, as illustrated by her stronger than average eyesight. No matter how inconsequential the scar had been in the long run, the redhead was uncomfortable with the idea of it being a landmark on her face: the thing which grabbed everyone's attention right away and held it whenever a memory of Leahndr Aspont popped up in that person's mind.

She wished to be overlooked much of the time, simply for the ease of travel time and avoiding powerful enemies and possible enemy-turned from allies, but nobody liked to be reduced to one distinguishing mark on his or her face.

With a toss of her hair, Leah smiled with an uncannily cheerful expression that had formed out of the blue. "Mistress, Dr. Geoss requested that we complete the mission as soon as possible," she reminded the woman, struggling to escape from her inner city cant as she addressed the matron as politely as possible. "So's be like- I mean, so if we want to follow his instructions, I should really get to consuming those lacrimas already." Maintaining the pleasant expression was hardly a chore for the mage, as she was accustomed to doing so. And being peevish or overly impatient was never a very fun state of emotion to be stuck under in and therefore under the influence of, anyways.

Her face showing utter surprise at the girl's statement, Ulla shook her head briefly in an odd gesture of clearing it from the clutter of... something. Something distracting. The redheaded mage was in no position to accuse anyone of anything, but the woman had 100% been eyeing up Dr. Geoss earlier, so maybe it was more of a someone distracting. Either way, she was done with the hesitations. Going in the water was bad enough, but a build up to it would only make her even more nervous.

"Yes, of course dearie, you'll be wanting to get along now. Those jewels certainly are a nice reward, aren't they! Well, then... here you go!" The woman's face, which had been previously so warm and motherly, twisted into a kind of vindictive expression as she dumped all the lacrimas out of the bag and onto the pier. In her surprise, Leah failed to catch more than two as the spheres smashed on the wood or rolled off into the water. Perhaps she could recover some of them, but... why had Ulla done this? Because she thought the redhead was shallow and only in it for the jewels?

"Now, if you'll excuse me... I have pe- things to attend to." Was this about old man Geoss? Please don't tell her... it was so about Dr. Geoss. And yet another person does something awfully stupid and against their actual will and personality, just for the sake of what they believe is love. This was why the mage had a love and hate relationship with that emotion (no pun intended).

Post by Lacey Botticelli 26th March 2017, 7:56 pm

Refusing to resign herself to drowning in an attempt to complete this mission, Leah promptly cringed as she broke the lacrima in front of her face, inhaling the cool vapor that seeped out. Shards of the magical, glass-like material pierced the skin of her palms as the girl tried to breathe- but couldn't. Gasping for oxygen, she wobbled unsteadily on her feet as the researcher stomped away without even a wayward glance back.

And then the redhead toppled into the ocean.

It was cold, and her breath hitched as soon as the icy water contacted her skin. As it slipped over her arms and legs, enveloping her in an unnerving weightless kind of way, the girl found she could breathe, even though it was hard. Still shocked by the chill, since although the sun had been shining on the water endlessly (well, at least since it had risen this morning) there was enough of the liquid that it was still well below the temperature of the atmosphere. Scrambling to move, the girl kicked as hard as she could, barely managing to propel her body at all. Fortunately, the undercurrent in the waves pulled her closer to her destination: the sandy floor of the ocean, where a few unbroken lacrimas were scattered.

She tried to pick up the orbs, which were littered around in a fairly spread out fashion, but to no avail. All the girl had succeeded in doing was wasting precious time of air. With one lacrima clutched in her left hand, Leah set off at a slow swimming pace in a random direction she supposed would have to do, not having a map or anything.

Post by Lacey Botticelli 27th March 2017, 1:43 pm

Barely had she progressed thirty meters before a swarm of fish, each about the length of her forearm, gathered around her in a great cloud. It was not particularly harmful, since she found they seemed to mostly be interested in nosing at her clothes and nibbling on the dead skin on the surface of her dermis. Nonetheless, the fact that they continued to impair her vision quickly became overly obstructive to her desires, as sight was needed to keep any kind of bearing on her position here at the bottom of the ocean. Without a hint of regret, the girl shook her body in an almost frantic gesture, loosening the few fish that had sunk their small teeth into the fabric of her garments. None of the little buggers who had tried to get a taste of her actual flesh had managed to pierce the skin.

After she had finally managed to make a decent amount of progress on her journey, or at least, more than just some by her own judgement, Leah paused to consider where she wanted to go. Now in the middle of the ocean (well, not quite, as she was admittedly closer to the shore) the girl thought it might be best to head further down. Even if she considered herself to be situated at the bottom of the body of water, at the moment her physical self was actually located a decent twenty or so meters above the ocean floor. Having magical protection from the bends (the effects of liquid pressure), it was the best course of action. After all, how likely would it be that the treasure was floating in mid-water? It must be in a cave or the like...

Post by Lacey Botticelli 27th March 2017, 5:26 pm

Once her belly was resting against the sandy ocean floor, the girl tried to right herself. Walking upright would be much more convenient than say, trying to doggie paddle and simultaneously do some type of mangled version of the dolphin kick.

Doing her best to get her feet to stay flat on the ground of the underwater world, Leah noticed without much interest that the surface was more sturdy than it had originally seemed. Rather than being comprised of fluffy sand, such as that of a beach or the like, it was just a thin film of the powdery substance. Underneath this, she supposed, was some kind of rock (either the plates themselves or a coral bed or something). And surprisingly enough, the sand didn't feel wet at all; likely this was because she herself was currently immersed in water, but who knew?

Tentatively taking a step in her pseudo-walking stance, the girl struggled not to tilt backwards as the density of the water hindered her forward movements. Just then, a bolt of pain shot through her foot just as the earth seemed to move out from underneath her. Scattering grains of the white solid through the water, a quartet of sting rays swirled out of the veil of sand that was lingering in the water around her. As they surrounded her, the set to Leah's mouth became more exasperated.

Post by Lacey Botticelli 27th March 2017, 8:03 pm

Yet another situation to spend more time wasting air time on the lacrima fighting needless enemies. She should have known that walking near the bottom of the sea, where more aquatic life undoubtedly made their homes, was a bad idea. Suppressing a sigh of annoyance (since that would really just waste even more of her time available) , the redhead slid two imperial daggers out of her extra dimensional space, gripping them loosely in her palms. Although this situation was a bit tiresome and undoubtedly did nothing to improve her mood, it was not particularly worrisome.

At least, that was what Leah thought.

... and it turned out to be just so. With a few slices from her trusty blades, the sand critters swam away with bruised pride. The redhead had proved to be a bigger challenge than they had thought. Not being particularly suicidal animals, the group had simply decided to go off and hunt prey more their size, which suited Leah perfectly fine. ReQuipping the weapons back into their storage space, the redhead swiped a hand across her forehead, pulling the straggly strands of hair back into place. Even though she could breathe normally and open her eyes without feeling the sting of salt water, being completely submerged in the ocean was showing in other ways. Namely, her uncomfort when it came to clothing (although the dripping garments did not drag her down more than usual, since there was increased buoyancy, anyways).

Post by Lacey Botticelli 27th March 2017, 8:21 pm

Just as the mage had finally thought she would be able to continue on towards the treasure without any more setbacks or time consuming distractions, another pair of sting rays decided it would be a fabulous idea to peel themselves off the ocean floor and come shooting towards her. Avoiding the tails was easy enough, but it was odd to do so. During her stay on the bottom of the sea as an undead creature, Leah had found it remarkably easy to avoid most of the critters. They were typically quite passive and only attacked upon being provoked; on second thought, these were no ordinary creatures. The lacrima, the treasure which Dr. Geoss and the other researchers were looking for, could have caused the attitudes of the inhabitants of the nearby area to experience a significant change. In fact, hadn't the research aide said something about that? Or had that been the lead scientist himself?

Pondering upon this, the scarlet haired mage once again requipped a few daggers to take care of the sting rays with as least damage being done to any party as possible. After all, it wasn't the little buggers' fault that they had been turned ultra aggressive due to magical tampering with the waters and the normally neutral and cool aura they emitted. Continuing on her way and stashing the blades back in their rightful places, Leah wondered if she shouldn't consume the second lacrima. Who knew how much further they had to go... but she felt as if her breaths were getting shorter and harder to take with every second that went by. Not quite yet could she feel liquid in her lungs, but she never wanted to. Waiting until that point was far too risky.

Post by Lacey Botticelli 28th March 2017, 4:40 am

Crushing the lacrima in the palm of her hand, Leah winced once again as blood seeped out from the wounds were the shards had broke the skin. Luckily, there did not seem to be any sharks around; they would have reacted quite quickly, she supposed. And it was nice that there were no substantially sized creatures nearby, for the tone of the water she was swimming in abruptly changed. It had been getting colder and colder to the touch, but the chill grew to an extreme level now. Her teeth chattered as the girl ventured farther into the area. Once again, she found that she had a bit of trouble breathing, but not by any fault of the underwater oxygen lacrima. Rather, her breaths were startled and ragged but markedly deeper than usual. It was a bit like hopping into an ice cold shower.

Inhaling as best she could, Leah continued through the waters with a guarded expression steeled across her face and reflected in her distrustful eyes. Oh, she was ready for something to pop out at her. And so it did.

Apparently, the hyper aggressive instincts of animals-- all animals, had been brought out by the artifact. This was because well, she was absolutely positive that gigantic octopi had never been in the habit of lashing out with their arms and trying to squeeze with suction cups, the life out of nearby mages. In fact, she had always been under the impression that the gargantuan aquatic creatures were rather lonesome (like Leah herself) and also a bit shy, and more likely to flee than attack.

Post by Lacey Botticelli 28th March 2017, 4:52 am

And now she was lost. Swirling around helplessly inside the mass of her-black ink, the mage wondered what exactly this species even was. To her knowledge, squids were the ones with ink; perhaps the treasure had the effect of mutating the creatures who were affected for a long enough time. Either way, she was currently flailing around in the middle of a huge spot of dark blackness, and her magic was thoroughly unusable at the moment due to technical difficulties. That was code speak for, it hadn't been completely keyed yet to her new blades from Fiore. The customs officials had gotten rather prickly about bringing weapons in from Sin and Iceberg and such.

With a furious tilt to her head, the redhead drew her twin imperial daggers and kicked in a strangled fashion through the cloud of messy darkness. She was hardly uncomfortable in this kind of setting and situation; Leah did depend on the shadows to do a lot of her work, after all. Finally making her way out of the ink, which had basically stopped spreading at a quick rate by now, the mage met face to face with the massive octopus.

Its eyes were centimeters from her own.

Briefly panicking, Leah considered heading straight back into the cloud of purply dark liquid that was admittedly more dispersed now, but might be able to cover an escape.

She knew, however, that it would have done no good. The sea animal was so aggressive that it might have dragged itself off of the pedestal it had assumed atop the treasure.

...on second thought... that was the perfect solution.

With a concealed grin (even though there was nobody around to witness her or judge, since she doubted very many mages or even other people went around getting the commentaries of gigantic octopi, the redhead shouted a taunt at the creature.

Except, of course, her words came out in rather oddly shaped bubbles of air, and she could only hear herself at all, Leah supposed, because of the sound traveling through the bones of her face. With a bit of a sigh (which released even more bubbles), she resigned herself to give up that plan. At least, until the creature who had the statue of a small house suddenly made a wide grasping motion, lashed out at her with four arms, and then peeled itself off of the box she assumed held the artifact. That was nice, but the problem is... the octopus was now headed at an alarming speed, straight for her. Oh boy, that was a testament to its newly found aggressiveness.

Rather than swimming away from the creature, Leah dove as well as she could in the water (which seemed to make all her movements sluggish) towards the now open treasure. She wasn't exactly faster than the animal, but she did have more of a skinny figure if we're being honest. And she succeeded in grabbing the treasure, reluctantly holding it briefly (even though the researchers had promised it wouldn't affect mages, who knew how reliable they really were?) before storing it away in her extra dimensional space.

Swimming away as quickly as possible, the redhead realized that the octopus made no movement to follow her. Instead, it fell back onto the bed of rock and kind of half-cave formation, which probably had been its original home.

After another tiresome fifteen minutes or so of pure swimming, Leah was all tuckered out. Earlier, she had possessed the adrenaline from the fighting and running away (well, swimming away) from all the various she creatures. Now, reduced to just movements like paddling and the slow, laborious kicking that was admittedly a powerful stroke but sacrificed its speed for such. Finally, she broke the surface and was able to drag herself onto the wet wood (now wet from her, at least) and very well about that, too. Her breathing had been particularly full of strife at the end. Tossing the treasure, which she had materialized a few meters away from the surface, at Ull, the girl glared and snatched away the money in the woman'a extended hand.

And so Leah did not drown after all.
