"You...don't have enough staff?" Siennah asked, cocking her head to one side.
The manager at Saint Cook nodded, bowing her head slightly. She was a tall woman with steel grey hair pulled back into a bun on top of her head.
“Yes, I’m very sorry. But, with the preparations for this banquet, even being short a few hands means we have to close the restaurant for the rest of the day. And I’m worried we won’t be able to make it, still,” the manager said.
Siennah nodded. Saint Cook was fairly famous in Fiore for serving excellent quality food. It was a shame that the wizard would be able to have a lunch there after all. She had saved up a little to treat herself, but it couldn’t be helped.

“That’s very unfortunate. I hope everything works out well, in the end,” Siennah sighed.
She had assumed that Saint Cook was open, given the activity and noise coming from the building. Even through the open door, Siennah could make out chefs and decorators bustling to and fro. It was like a hive of bees, with a handful of senior staff shouting instructions from all about.
“Thank you so much for understanding our situation. If only we had just a few more people,” The manager chuckled.
“I’m sure we’ll be able to make do. We always do. You wouldn’t happen to have a few friends in town who know how to cook, would you?” the older woman asked.

Siennah shook her head. She was passing through Oak Town on the way back from a job, and hadn’t even really acquainted herself with the other members of Lamia Scale, yet. So, she was unfortunately on her own.
“I’m sorry, I’m actually on my own. Who are you missing?” Siennah asked.
“We’re mostly short on some mid-level staff. But, we could do well even with some people to help with prep and plating if we had just one more cook,” the manager said.
Siennah pulled the long sleeve of her dress to her lips thinking.
“I might still be able to help you out, then,” Siennah smiled, after a moment of thought.
“Really? It would be such a relief. My name is Estelle Greyfox, the manager of this restaurant. And you are?”

“My name is Siennah Burke. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance,” the wizard said, taking Estelle’s offered hand in a friendly shake.
Estelle Greyfox’s eyes went to Siennah’s hand, and her eyes momentarily widened when she spotted the white guild mark on Siennah’s palm. Oh dear. The older woman frowned for a moment. Lamia Scale didn’t have a reputation for collateral damage during jobs, so it was probably fine.
“Please come inside, I’ll introduce you to the staff. You’ll need to wash up and get an apron on as soon as possible,” Estelle said, before leading Siennah inside Saint Cook’s front doors.

The cleaning staff was scrambled in full force. A young worker hurried past, and nearly bumping into Estelle as he hauled a pile of cleaning cloths so tall it obscured his vision. There was no corner un-cleaned and polished, and the wooden walls, furniture, and floor sparkled. Piles of table linens were on each table, while staff discussed last-minute choices
Estelle bustled to the back of the restaurant, and into the kitchen. There, the noise bounced off the walls as two-dozen cooks and chefs scrambled to keep up an exhausting pace of preparation. Stock pots were full of ingredients, already simmering. Several roasts were already on the spit, or mid-way through time in the oven.

“Listen up, everyone! Siennah is going to be helping us out, only for today. Please adjust the workload and make sure she knows what to do after she gets ready for the kitchen!” Estelle shouted into the kitchen.
Several members of staff responded with one-word or so—as if there was no more time than that to spare for talking. Many truly wonderful dishes required a number of hours to complete, so even though there were hours before the banquet, time was already running out in many cases.
Washing up took little time. Siennah left her long vest in an employee locker and tied up her long sleeves. Those would only get in the way. Thankfully, there were several aprons to borrow.

Siennah took one apron for herself, cinching the ties tight behind her waist. She had to adjust the top straps to account for her slight height. The wizard tied all of her hair back with a spare white bandana.
“Where is the area for cutting vegetables and the like?” the wizard asked the kitchen in general.
“Over this way. But, there’s no way a rookie can make a dent in what we need without sacrificing valuable space,” A cook with a shaved head said.
“Don’t worry. I’ve got just the person for the job,” Siennah gave a small smile before reaching into the pocket of her dress.
She withdrew a small origami soldier.

The origami soldier grew to full size in a second, silent and casting all the other cooks in shadow from its sheer size. Several of the cooks backed away, letting out noises of surpise.
“Just give this guy a few kitchen knives, and he’ll make short work of the ingredient preparation,” Siennah smiled.
The wizard and several other cooks gave the origami soldier examples of the sizes he should cut each ingredient to, and then the summoned swordsman went to work.
The cut vegetables, meat, and fruits shot out from the cutting board and knife like a storm, each item going into a bowl for collection. It was almost like watching in ice chipper in action, and several cooks gasped at how quick it was—too quick for the normal human eye to follow.

One of the chefs barked a laugh.
“Now, this is my kind of magic! We wouldn’t have to get here so early in the morning if we had something like this around all the time. We might actually be able to make this work in time,” they said.
A ripple of murmurs went through the kitchen as the origami swordsman’s movements sped up. Chopped vegetables in near perfect shapes spilled into bowls like waterfalls. Precise. Accurate. Fast. One of the cooks who had been working on chopping simply abandoned her post, choosing to run the prepared ingredients back and forth to other cooks from the cutting area.

Basket by basket, the origami soldier laid waste to everything piled up by the cutting station. Within an hour, what would have taken the cooks hours to do was simply finished. The other cooks at the station paused, almost in awe of how much work had been accomplished. Then, they each scanned the kitchen in turn before rushing off to find other tasks.
The magic of the origami swordsman did run out, with its task complete. But, Siennah was already on another-task. She put the finishing touches on a half-dozen talismans with the phrase ‘self-stirring.’ A number of the chefs were tied up with simple tasks like stirring stock, only because the broth had to be in constant motion.

Combined with the talismans and the summoned swordsman, Siennah managed to free up a dozen chefs by herself in a matter of an hour. She wiped a drop of sweat from her brow, a little fatigued from keeping her magic power active in such a noisy environment. It was strange how much something like a crowd or noise could make concentrating more difficult. This was definitely something she’d have to work on in the future.
Estelle herself began cutting and plating appetizers and various fruits into delicate arrangements for a fruit drink. One of the chefs beside her shook his head.
“I can’t believe you found someone like this on such short notice. At this rate, we might even end up finishing early,” the cook said.

By the third hour, the kitchen was poetry in motion. All of the stock pots, and some of the spits, were rotating at a precise rate—more equal than most of the cooks could have managed. That freed up a sizable percentage of the staff to work on perfecting the seasoning on each dish, or to join Estelle in preparing the fragile and elegant garnishes and displays.
Estelle stared at the clock in disbelief by the time the nobility arrived and began milling about Saint Cook.
“I can’t believe it. We’ve really gotten back on schedule, with even a few minutes to spare!” The woman grinned.
“Don’t let up, everyone! We’re going to make this night a huge success!” she said, and the entirety of the kitchen staff roared in agreement.

Dish after dish began piling out of the kitchen and into the dining hall in waves of plates and uniformed wait staff. But, there was no time for rest. Even if the first wave of banquet dishes were on the floor, all that meant was that there was more space to work on subsequent things.
The guests outside began murmuring in appreciation while they ate. Saint Cook was famous for using fresh, seasonal ingredients. So the menu changed as the seasons did. Today’s banquet was off to a wonderful start. Although the staff seemed nervous at the beginning of the meal, they seemed to gain confidence after the first round of dishes made it to the table.

Several of the Fiore nobility present mentioned that they had not visited Saint Cook before, but that it seemed to offer a very high quality selection. Half-way through the meal, all of the top chefs in the kitchen were beaming with pride. It seemed to give them an extra boost and a spring in their step. Everyone had made a great impression, and it looked like they would be seeing more VIPs in the future.
While Siennah didn’t know the local recipes, she still managed to be one of the stars of the kitchen—taking on the work of nearly a dozen people with magic. One chef leaned over to the wizard while roasting a steak.
“If it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t be able to make an impression like this. We’d all still be stuck doing basic prep. I don’t know how to thank you for saving us today,” he said.

Siennah laughed, wiping her hands on her apron.
“It’s the least I could do. It would great if you got some good publicity out of this. As long as I can eat some of the leftovers after, I’ll be more than happy!” the wizard said.
It wasn’t like a rookie like Siennah could go on any serious missions, anyway. For the time being, simple things like this suited her well enough. The clatter of dishes. The subtle roar of a kitchen in full swing. Mingling aromas of spices and foods being cooked. The thunder of several dozen feet moving in time to the same end. Ah. If Siennah paused for a moment, she could feel that beat through the table.

The kitchen seemed almost empty when the last of the main dishes went out. Almost. There was still a crush of cooks, ingredients, and plates. But, now it was time to start finishing up the desserts. Savory and salty scents gave way to sweet cakes, puddings, and fruit trays. Pastry dough filled all corners of every available workspace, while two pairs of chefs cranked away at ice-cream makers.
Estelle returned to the kitchen, then rushed to the storage room off to the side to make last-minute changes to the after-dinner tea and coffee selections. Only then could a few workers take ten-minute breaks for a small snack and cold water.

Estelle joined the small knot around several pitchers of ice water, dabbing a few beads of sweat from her forehead with a pale blue handkerchief. She passed off three wooden boxes of tea and a sack of coffee beans to another person—who disappeared back into the kitchen’s hive of activity immediately after. The older woman took a glass, filled it with water, and drained it in one long pull before pouring another. She sighed, looking at Siennah as she did so.
“I think we’re in the last real stretch here,” Estelle said.
“Everyone outside seems at least content with the food. After dessert, we’ve got cleanup and then it’s all over. At least for this year.”

“This year?” Siennah asked.
“Yes. Several of our customers have already asked if they could reserve the restaurant for several occasions in the coming year. We have several birthdays as well as a request for two holiday parties. I don’t know if we’re going to be able to live through it, but I’ll count the entire thing as a huge success,” Estelle laughed.
Siennah smiled, taking another long drink of cold water. Even if she wasn’t much of a wizard, at least she could do this much. Even though the snack wasn’t much, Siennah felt full somehow.
“You sure I can’t ask you to stay on as staff?” Estelle joked.

This time the wizard laughed as well, pushing some stray hair away from her face.
“I’m afraid not. I’ll probably end up taking the last train out tonight, and then I might only come back as a customer. I don’t think I’m cut out for this type of harsh work,” Siennah said.
And then break was over for that group. In the last few hours, desserts left the kitchen in a parade of merry colors. And then, the kitchen almost seemed to deflate with relief. Siennah sagged against a counter piled high with dirty dishes. When she turned to move some of them to the sink, a chef with a shaved head stopped her.

“What do you think you’re doing, wizard? Don’t you have a train to catch?” He laughed.
Then, the chef offered Siennah a bag with a variety of packed left-overs from the feast.
“You’ve done a great thing for us, and the boss won’t forget that. She’s still hobnobbing with the VIPs, so she can’t see you off herself. But, none of us want you to miss that train. Come back and visit sometime, will you?” he grinned.
Siennah took the offered boxed leftovers, finally shedding her apron before leaving. The goodbyes couldn’t go on very long. After all, there was still clean-up to finish. But, at least everyone could sleep soundly that night knowing that the banquet had been a huge success—at least judging by how many reservations Saint Cook took that night.
