- The Arcane River:
Through a separate plane of existence, flows the Arcane river. It has no water, yet flows with an unclaimed reserve of magic and Arcana ready to be plucked and chosen by some newborn souls of the multiverse. This river, large and unmeasurably infinite, is one of the thousands of sources of magic known to the multiverse. While the beginning of the river is unknown, the ending is not. The weak space around the plane of existence on which Earthland resides is one of these endings and is only one of many outcomes for the river to take. It is an anomaly in that if one person were to track the flow, it would end up in a different world with each observation, even if played back through some form of recording.
One infinitely small drop from this river has an infinite potential of magic to be cast, never to be used up.
The river itself, and the bank of knowledge on which it resides is the entirety of the plane of which the Arcane occupies, and in it, exists nothing else. Dotted along the banks of knowledge are settlements and locations created and founded by being and creatures who have always existed and always will. It is unknown the origin of these creatures, however, they most likely were spawned from the abundance of knowledge excreted and amassed by the river itself.
The closest town to the waterfall at the end, is Lacheln, nicknamed the city of dreams and illusions. One stop above, is Chu Chu island, where brightly coloured beings survive in a pseudo-tropical environment. Beyond, is unknown to most citizens of Lacheln, as upstream travel was near impossible if you weren’t downstream from the town of your birth. and sometimes, the remains of cities further up along wash down the river, creating new planes of existence with each chunk of debris, each having their own scientific laws and principles.
- Lacheln:
- The city of Illusions was very prosperous, out of population, and no other quantifiable means. It was a city of fantastical architecture and stained glass windows decorated with bows, beads and other festive pieces. Since it was the closest to the waterfall, it was very oftenly visited by tourists from further up the stream. The waters of the Arcane often seeped into the banks of knowledge, causing pools and waterscapes to often form. Lacheln was founded upon these brooks and pools, using them along with boats steered through canals as their main mode of transportation.
Its inhabitants named themselves fairies, after a chunk of debris washed up on their shore and bestowed them with the traditions and folklore of Earthland.
With this knowledge, they grew wings. It was not out of vanity that these features morphed into a copy of the Earthland tales, but more of an inability to control and stop knowledge spilling out from their containment. The citizens had markets, but not out of any economic need, and instead, the knowledge of Earthland economics controlling their daily routine. This was why debris polluting the Arcane river was always feared by each and every living creature in or on the Arcane river.
Titania was the mayor of Lacheln, but never really had anything to do. The city built and governed itself, therefore she was only given this position as she was the oldest known member of the settlement. It was more of a ceremonial position more than anything, but She loved it. Having seniority meant that it was very easy for her to resist the influence of debris and pollutants, it meant that she was practically one of the only Lacheln residents with any sense of free will. It was often very depressing to think of how these people were only being chipper and polite by force after learning of the Earthland social etiquette. Titania spent most of her time either swimming in Arcane pools or hibernating in her clocktower for eons at a time. Through these activities, she developed a sense and deep connection to the arcane, enabling herself to will and shape parts of it.
- The Flood:
It was unforeseen and unpredicted by the river analysts. Nobody saw it coming, not even Titania, who was awoken by the crumbling and destruction of her clocktower Every other building was turning to rubble in response to the ever powerful tides and strength of the flow. The citizens simply vaporized on contact, and were absorbed into the banks of knowledge as just more strings of information and recollection.
In pure terror, she sat atop her sinking tower, fearful of her fate that would most likely be drowning. She knew that somehow the Arcane did not harm her like it did the commoners, who most likely did not have the same bond as her. Regardless, it was utter despair to watch the city she had known for an infinitely long time stretching out into the past. Words could not describe the darkness of her soul that day. The entirety of the city had been submerged and swept away by the rapids, while the Arcane lapped at her feet.
Taking control of her future in spite of an unavoidable fate, she threw herself into the river, gasping in pain at the sudden purity of the flow. It was never like this, not even ever coming close. This anomaly was not caused by debris, but something much more sinister. After running out of energy, her body went limp and unconscious, carried down the river and towards the waterfall. The ragdoll of her body was cast over the edge and send plummeting down through creation and into Earthlands where she had floated unconscious for centuries, the Arcane bond mostly severed save for the few droplets of Arcane that had been absorbed into her.
