Corliss was not happy. NOT HAPPY. She had chosen what had appeared to be an easy job from an easy client: using an appearance-altering lacrima, she was to go on a date in place of an "Alex Marriott". She was supposed to go on a date with a man named Jared, and discuss subjects along the lines of flowers, stars, and classical literature, all of which were subjects familiar to the young girl. Corliss was a romantic by nature, so flirting with the guy would come fairly naturally. The only problem with this plan? Alex was 6'4, ruggedly handsome, with gorgeous green eyes and a sandy beard. Mr. Marriott, age 19, looked almost 30. For all his size and strength, he glanced around the room nervously, making the large man seem a little less intimidating, though only a little. She shouldn't have taken the job- she really shouldn't have- but the look in those emerald eyes was so desperate that the young mage couldn't say no.

Because she could not deny the desperate man his chance at this romantic evening, Corliss now sat at a table for two in a lovely restaurant, beside a window overlooking the surrounding mountains. The sun was setting, bathing the sky in rays of gold and pink. It was a perfect venue for a perfect date, with the exception of the mage's appearance. The lacrima worked splendidly, a little too well perhaps, and the young girl now had the appearance of the burly client. Her hands, huge and rough, fiddled nervously with the tablecloth. She didn't know how to act like Alex. She barely knew the man, and suddenly she was to pretend to be him for an evening. Well, not entirely an evening. The lacrima would wear off in exactly three hours, leaving the mage to revert back to her original appearance. Currently, she had blown through exactly twelve minutes of her three hours, and hoped that her date would arrive shortly.

"Hello Alex," Corliss's head jerked from the window in search of the speaker, and suddenly the client's request made sense. Jared was a strikingly handsome man, with curling brown hair that fell just short of his chocolate eyes. He wore a plain blue polo shirt and tan pants, but the twinkle in his eye and the charming smile on his face made him impossible to ignore. He had a natural charisma about him, as if he radiated love and happiness. The young man lit up the room, and caught the mage off-guard"I'm so sorry I'm late; I got held up at work. Corliss fumbled for a brief second before she found her words, taken aback by the magically-altered voice she emitted. "No, uh, it's perfectly fine. I haven't been here long, don't worry," Pulling her lips into a nervous smile, she hoped that her date wouldn't pick up on her discomfort. With a slight sigh of relief, her date took his place across from the disguised mage. "So, how was your day?" Hoping that questions would carry her through the strangest scenario of her life thus far, she held her breath and waited for the response.

"My day went smoothly, yours?" Getting lost in his magical smile, Corliss barely snapped out of the trance enough to answer. It dawned on the poor mage that she lacked the sufficient knowledge of her client to know what he did for a living, so she had to improvise. Pretending to start to answer, her elbow swept the silverware, which had been resting just short of the table's edge, from the table and scattered the utensils on the floor. The only thing the girl hadn't accounted for in the absence of time was her newfound height. Stooping down to pick up the silverware, she noticed her date following suit, and immediately felt her face turn red. "Oh goodness I'm so sorry" Trying to keep herself from babbling (and failing), she stood up a little too rapidly, and hit her head on the table. "Alex! Oh my god, are you okay?" Nodding slowly, Corliss returned to her seat, more embarrassed than hurt. This whole pretending to be a guy thing was seriously throwing her game. In hopes that she could save her horror of a date, she pointed out the window. The world outside was a mix of copper and midnight, hues of red and gold streaking across the sky. The sun had set, leaving nothing but a silhouette of the mountains before it.

"Woah," Corliss sighed in relief, the crisis averted. She slowly turned her gaze from the scenery to her date, who was too distracted by the view to notice. "These sunsets are the reason I live here. I could work anywhere, but that view captured my heart," Jared turned to his date, or at least the person he thought was his date. "Just like someone else I know." Corliss felt her face redden. Jared took a sip of water, allowing the both of them to regain their composure. "You know, I was starting to worry you'd never ask me out. I'm glad you did though, this seems like the perfect way to end a day."
Keeping the conversations simple, the mage managed to keep her identity safe, and ended her date with the gentleman on excellent terms, though the reality of the matter was that Jared would not have been swayed by anything short of her revealing her true identity. She walked her date home, and declined an offer to stay longer, making the excuse that "he didn't want to rush things." Then she reported to the client, explaining to the real Alex that the date was a wonderful success, and that he should take Jared on real dates from then on.
