    Job Details:
Enola Gay played nervously with the letter in her hand, occasionally looking out the train window. Her facial expression was serious yet determined: a messenger had brought her this letter, which detailed a particularly strange hardship her old friend – Tinker Kin – was going through. The letter, perhaps a little cryptic, explained some sort of curse ravaging the land. It gave hint to some kind of creature but what, Enola had no clue.

The train slowed and Anguis Pisa rubbed her elbow against Enola’s. “Hey, pay attention. This is our stop.”

Enola sighed and tucked the letter away into her jeans pocket. Guessing there’d be trouble, she abstained from where her maid uniform and instead chose her usual job uniform: sleeveless shirt and jeans. She plucked Perseguidor (sheathed of course) from her side and hoisted herself up from her seat.

“Right… Let’s get going.” The duo stepped off the train, a fact that utterly horrified everyone else on board. They obviously knew something neither of the pair did.

When the two were off the train, the conductor started it up again almost immediately and was gone with the train soon enough. The duo sat at the opening of a forest where they were greeted an eerie mist climbing out of it. Something about it sent a chill up Enola’s spine, though Anguis seemed completely fine.

“Alright, let’s get this over with... Tinker’s in a lone cabin, right?”

“Uh… yeah.” Enola fought to hide her stutter; however, Anguis’ snake-like intuition could sense a faint fear in her master’s tone.

    “What’s wrong with you?”

“N-nothing. Let’s ‘get this over with.’” Enola reluctantly took the lead in the hope that she’d look less cowardly. Anguis shrugged and followed. She might normally toy with poor Enola but she wasn’t in the mood – she just wanted to go home and wrest in the nice little burrow she’d made in Shohei’s yard.

    “Did you hear something?”

Enola had indeed heard something. Two specters wondered through the mist and darted toward Enola, who was too shocked to move. Taking initiative, Anguis slithered in front of Enola and attempted to swipe at the ghosts, though it proved useless. Her attacks simply went through the spirits whilst their own attacks landed painfully on Anguis.

“Gah! Enola… Enola? Where’d you go!?” Anguis turned around to see her master had left. Enola, apparently, had turned herself into a dust cloud out of pure fear and flew away into a winding trail that led deeper into the forest. She knew Anguis would be upset but it wasn’t her brain deciding her actions: it was raw emotion.

Once she was satisfied, mildly, that she’d escaped the ghosts, she shifted back into her physical form and hid behind a tree. However, the tiny hairs of her arm stood up as the snapping of a twig could be heard.

    “W-who’s there!?”

Enola’s eyes widened with terror as she saw more ghosts. As with the first pair, she turned into a dust cloud and flew away further into the forest. It was quite easy too – they were far too sluggish to keep up with her in cloud form.

Anguis, finding it hopeless to fight the phantoms (especially since Enola had abandoned her), darted off into the forest, though they had a much easier time keeping up with her than Enola; in fact, they took swipes at her tail as she fled.

Damn that Enola! When I find her…

Anguis found herself facing a lake and came up with an idea: she’d swim away! After all, it’s not like ghosts could swim, right? She slithered her way into the cool water, leaving behind a trail in the sandy beach, and ducked her head under, sending a series of bubbles upwards. She snickered on the inside, wandering if this would actually work.

It just didn’t stop: ghost after ghost. Enola shuddered once more and exploded into a dust cloud to escape the undead menace. She wasn’t even sure where in the forest she was anymore.

Meanwhile, Anguis peeked her head out of the water. Her eyes darted to the left, to the right, and back to the left. Once she was certain it was safe, she swam back (if you can call slapping your tail “swimming”) and washed up on a bank.

“Now, where am I?” She looked around and saw little more than the mist that creeped out of the forest and onto the water. Strangely, it brought the undead lamia some comfort. It felt as if she belonged here in this oasis of the dead. She stood in a trance before snapping back and resolving to find Tinker and Enola, though she was certain she’d have to come back for a little vacation if she ever found the time.

Enola finally found a moment to rest. She even ended her Dust to Dust spell to help herself recover.

    Snap!

Uh oh: another twig snapped. This time, however, it wasn’t a ghost but rather a bear. It was no ordinary bear either: it was an undead bear! Blood and puss fell off from all over its body and it was perhaps the most grotesque thing she’d even seen. Still, though, she gulped and stood erect, albeit with a lot of shaking. She nervously unsheathed Perseguidor and watched as the beast charged at her. She might normally have used her sword’s whip form but she was simply too scared to properly use it. Instead, she held her sword up with both hands and waited until it was in range. Then, she swung the blade down on the bear’s head, sending a wave of blood splattering the trees and dirt around them. It may have been absolutely disgusting but the animal at least died.

“Yuck…” She tried to wipe the blood off of her shirt with little success.

Enola wondered hopelessly through the forest until she spotted more figures in the mist: five ghouls. They horrifying creatures and noticed Enola almost as quick as she noticed them. The mage held out her hand with fright and sent out a crescent of coagulated dust, killing one of the mindless monsters.

As they approached, she held out her sword as if it would keep them at bay. She swung it, killing another one, but a third ghoul was right up on her. It pinned against the tree, with Perseguidor being the only thing between her and the ghoul’s teeth. However, that didn’t keep its rotted hands from clawing at her (ripping a piece of her shirt unfortunately).

Further away, Anguis ducked – in an almost cartoonish fashion – into some nearby bushes as she spotted more ghosts. Hiding seemed easy here for Anguis, who was an undead creature herself. It was like becoming one with the dreaded forest for her.

Geez! Where do things keeps coming from!?” She stood within the bushes until the specters passed. As it had been demonstrated, there was no way she could face those things head on.

The fear within Enola became too much. Her strength weakened and the ghoul managed to take a bite out of her shoulder, though she managed to disembowel the creature shortly afterwards, killing it. She held on to her wound with one hand and pointe sword at the last two ghouls. Feeling it a hopeless fight, she attempt to flee but tripped backwards with a loud thump. The last two ghouls were closing in on her…

Meanwhile, Anguis slithered along the spooky path, hoping she was heading toward the cabin, when she heard moaning and groaning.

Oh great, what is it now?

She peeked to the side of the trail and spotted five ghouls slumping out of the forest with a spooky mist following them. Oddly, it cheered up the lamia. She held up claws and laughed, “Finally! Something I can actually hit!” She dashed toward them and, upon reaching the first, sunk her claws into its head.

One ghoul fell on top of Enola, clawing at her chest, whilst enough got on its knees and began chewing on her arm. She screamed out in pain and looked around frantically for her sword. When she spotted it just a foot away, she used her free arm to reach for it. She screamed out in the most terrible pain and bash in the skull of the one top of her. Fighting with all her might, she pulled her arm away from the hungry ghoul and attempted to crawl away. The ghoul wobbled after her, stepping in the trail of blood she left behind in the grass.

Anguis, on the other hand, was having much more fun. She sent her claws in the head of yet another ghoul though it managed to scratch at her tail. That’s when she heard the painful screams of Enola echoing through the forest. Anguis sighed, more out of frustration than relief.

A wave of pain went through Enola’s entire body as she felt the final ghoul chewing on her calf. Rather than kicking it off though, she spun her arm around with Persguidor and lopped the ghoul’s head cleanly off; save for the massive amounts of blood. With what little relief she could muster, the young wizard slumped over in exhaustion.

Further away, Anguis managed to take down yet another ghoul with her claws. However, the two remaining ghouls managed to grab on to her upper body. They scratched and clawed at the human portion of her body and even attempted to bite her; fortunately, she managed to push undead duo away before they managed to sink their teeth into her. One of the ghouls were pushed into the trunk of one of the many pine trees. Meanwhile, the other ghoul recovered its stance and charged right back Anguis with a mindless ferocity.

Anguis is almost as upset, “You ruined my shirt! I’ve had it up to hear with you undead freaks!”

Enola tried to crawl along the path with caution, certain she’d be doomed if she ran into anything else. A new sort of pain began to overcome her though – the infection. The areas she’d been bit began to burn and it felt like she was dying from the inside out.

    I need... I need Anguis.

Meanwhile, Anguis smacked the charging ghoul with her tail using a surprising amount of force; so much so, in fact, that she managed to knock its head right off.

    One more…

The ghoul she had pushed into a tree brought itself up and charged like the last one and attempted to  strike Anguis with its hand. Anguis, seeing the opportunity for a game, whipped her tail once more. This time, though, she used it trip the mindless monster. When it landed on the dirt with a thump, the lamia bent  forward and punched its soft forehead with her clenched fist, splashing blood all over her.

Anguis continued searching for both the cabin and Enola until…

    “Well, look who it is!”

The lamia slithered along the dirt path until she happened upon a dying Enola, crawling little by little.

    “A-anguis, I need you to-“

“What!? What was that!? I couldn’t hear you!” Anguis laughed with delight, deciding to have a little fun with her cowardice master.

“Please, Anguis… I think I’m dying. My body feels awful…”

Anguis shrugged, “That sounds more like a ‘you’ problem.”

Enola merely slumped her head, too tired to move anymore. When it was clear her master was in no mood to play, Anguis sighed and lifted Enola up. She placed the woman over shoulders in a fireman carry and began slithering off down the trail.

“Just as a warning, we’re splitting the rewards this time since, you know, I’m doing all the work.”

“Wha-?” Enola grumbled. The sickness was obviously starting to get to her head.

Using her inhuman strength, Anguis carried her master along the trail until they reached a large hill. The moon shone brightly down, almost perfectly, on top of the hill to reveal a lone, humble cabin. The hill was high enough that the forest’s universal mist was unable to touch it.

“Up there! That’s Tinker’s cabin right? Enola?”

Enola groaned and drooled on her companion’s shoulder.

    “Oh, right. I forgot…”

Anguis went up the hill, following the dirt path that winded around right up to the wooden door.

    Knock! Knock!

“Anybody home!? Tinker!?” The lamia’s face went sour. She did not come all this way just for a silent cabin. She hoped that, at the very least, Tinker hadn’t parish, though she would never admit it. After all, Tinker hadn’t just been Enola’s childhood friend, he’d been Anguis’ as well. Granted, they were never on the best of terms, but Anguis desperately wanted to meet someone else from her past (besides Enola).

Silence. Silence. Silence. Bam! Anguis rammed through the wooden door, knocking it off its hinges.

The inside of the cabin was dark, save for the moonlight penetrating the small square windows. Dry blood littered much of the floor but Tinker was nowhere to be found. Instead, a series of bloody footprints led to the back door which hung wide open. Anguis placed Enola, who was fading in and out of consciousness, onto the bloody bed and went to check the back door. She peeked her head out, looking left, right, and then left again (much like she did when she was hiding within the lake) but saw nothing noticeable. A blood trail went down the hill but it faded, making it impossible track whosever blood it belonged to.

Anguis went back into the cabin moaned, “I guess we’re not going to be finding Tinker. Oh well, I’m sure he made it out okay… probably. Hopefully.” She looked down to Enola and sighed, realizing she might as well have been talking to herself.

“Now, what to do with you…”

Anguis searched the small cabin for any supplies that might help with Enola’s wounds until she found a first aid kit underneath the bed. From the looks of the bloody hand prints, the kit had already been used. The lamia slid the kit out and laid it on the nightstand next to the bed. Carefully, she used the supplies of the kit to first disinfect and clean her master’s wounds. Then, she started to sew all the cuts and bites together, though it was impossible with some. Once she was finished with that, Anguis wrapped the wounds up in bandages.

    “There, you're fine now.”

No reaction. Enola was apparently unconscious.

“Come on, we’ll come back and investigate some other time.” With that, she hoisted Enola up from the bed and carried the wizard in her arms. The scene might have looked comical were not for all the blood and bandages.

“Let’s go home. This place sucks anyway.”
