- Job: Nightmare Incarnate: The Beginning
Rank: C-Rank
Player Requirements: Maximum number of players is ten and the minimum is 2 D ranks. 10 posts per player minimum unless soloing(due to being higher than D rank) then 20 posts. 150 words per post.
Job Requirements: At least 2 D rank mages or the equivalent of. Find out what happened to the rune knights and escape while you are still sane.
Job Location: Spooky Forest
Job Description: One day you receive a large box from the mailman. After inspecting it, you see that it doesn't say anywhere what's inside or why it's been sent to you. All that is written on the box is your name as the recipient and the initials "SM".
Upon opening the box you discover that it's contents are a hardcover book, which upon closer inspection proves to be a person called Samuel Martin's personal diary, and a voice recorder lacrima, both covered in blood stains. Did that man send you this package? Despite the bad feeling you have, you open the book and skim through the entries.
INFORMATION:
"12 February, Day 647.
Today was a fun day. Me and Mary went on a picnic near the forest and spent the whole day talking about meaningless things. It really was a blissful experience and since she didn't have any problems today we were able to forget about reality, even if for just a day."
"19 February, Day 654.
It happened again. Mary collapsed again today and started mumbling about magical gates and how everything is going to be a nightmare. This is happening more and more often and I am getting really concerned now. No doctor knows what's wrong with her..."
"25 February, Day 660.
This is really getting out-of-hand! With each passing day Mary becomes more and more delirious. I don't know what to do any more. I've contacted every doctor and every mage I could find, but no one knows what's wrong with her. There has to be someone that can help..."
"1 March, Day 664.
This is my last hope. I contacted an exorcist who is said to be able to cure cases like Mary's. He's going to come tomorrow night. Maybe the end of this nightmare would finally come."
"2 March, Day 665.
It's a little before midnight now. The priest is going to come any minute and put Mary's troubled mind to peace once again."
"3 March, Day 666.
I... don't believe it. I remember last night... the purification ceremony... then something happened and I was sent flying, and Mary ran away towards the Spooky Forest. When I came to, the priest was lying on the ground with his heart gourged out. What on Earth happened last night? There's no time to waste, I know she's somewhere in the forest so I have to find her. I'll contact a couple friends from the Rune Knights and we'll set off to search for her. Please be okay, my love..."
From that point onward all pages are ripped from the book. After putting the diary down, you activate the recorder lacrima.
"Date- 4 March. Time- 1:43 PM.
This is Lieutenant Jacob Lars, recording an audio log to document the investigation and search. I am assigned due to my expertise in the field of demonology. It seems that a woman has been possessed by an unknown type of entity, presumably a type of demon, and has escaped in the Spooky Forest. We are currently within the said forest ourselves, having a local guide us through. For some reason when we entered it a thick, almost unnatural, fog descended upon us but we were capable of navigating through the dense vegetation regardless. Currently we are standing in a forest clearing about 2 klicks north of the entrance. So far there's no sight of of neither hostiles nor the woman. It's unnaturally quiet. A bad omen."
"Date- 4 March. Time- 2:30 PM.
This is Lieutenant Jacob Lars documenting the investigation and search for the possessed woman in the Spooky Forest. This is log number two. It's been nearly an hour since the previous log and we've spent the time delving further north into the forest. It's crazy here. Everywhere you look there are huge trees and if you look up there is nothing but branches and leaves. The vegetation on the higher levels of the forest is incredibly dense, so there barely is any light down on ground level. It almost feels like we're alone in another world with no way out, and that damn fog isn't helping either. All this is taking it's toll on the minds of the others.
We're nearing another clearing. I guess we'll rest there for a while."
"Date- 4 March. Time- 2:45 PM.
This is Lieutenant Jacob Lars documenting the investigation. This is audiolog number three. Things are not looking good. The others are getting seriously paranoid and I can't really blame them. This place plays with your mind in a very freaky way. A few minutes ago we continued moving deeper into the forest, following our course north. The guys are really getting worried now. They say that every now and then they see someone's silhouette in the distance, just beyond the fog, watching them. Observing their every move. I have yet to confirm the existence of this shadow, but if it is there then it might be the woman we were sent to find. Next time the silhouette makes an appearance we'll go after it."
"Date- 4 March. Time- 666:666 PM.
*The sound of someone's ragged breath mixed with their crazed running could be heard for several minutes. After that the barely audible thud, as if someone being hit against a tree, interrupts the running*
This is Leu*static*nt Jacob *pant* Lars. We *static*eed help! We...we got sep*static*ed and the *static* took us out *pant* one by one. It's b*static*n watching us all along! Tor*static*ring us while studying it's *pant* prey. It's close, *static* the only one left *static* coming f*static* me. *static* *static* *static* the time *static* thre *static* ourty-five. (after that point the static becomes too great and you can't understand anything)
Having listened to the lacrima, it's as if more questions have emerged than been answered. Who sent you these items? How do they know your name? What happened to the Rune Knights? What did they find in that forest?
It seems that you have no choice but to go there and find out yourself.
Enemies:
Weak: Disturbing sounds- Are those footsteps? A demented laughter somewhere in the distance? A person's dying screams? Is that a whisper you can hear, carried in the wind? This place is really freaky...
(Causes paranoia or similar effects, depending on your character. Strong-willed characters or people with a great ability to maintain their calmness can resist this to a great extent, though not completely. Having multiple weak enemy dices means that these sounds "stack", and so their effect becomes greater and perhaps even capable of breaking even the toughest of people. Duration is 3 posts.)
Normal: Poltergeists- Trees falling down, rocks suddenly shooting towards you, having your body strongly pushed away without any explanation. These anomalies can deal some serious damage or scare the living daylights out of you. They might even separate you from your allies. Be on guard. (Single poltergeist per normal monster encounter.)
Strong: The unknown figure- You can feel it, can't you? Just beyond the mist, it's hollow eyes staring right into your soul, sending ice-cold chills down your spine. No matter where you look it's there. Always watching, always moving. And no matter what you do, it's always just beyond the mist.
(Greatly frightens you, triggering your fight or flight mechanism. Whether you choose to attack or run away and hide depends on your character's personality. If this occurs in the early stages of the mission, before you've encountered the other anomalies much it will not have that great an effect. Encountering this in the later stages, however, will trigger your fight or flight mechanism, guaranteed.
Duration is 4 posts, extended depending on number of strong monster encounter dices rolled.)
Boss: Fear impersonated- Your time is up. The chase is over and now you must die. And it is coming to do just that. The unknown figure that had been stalking you until then finally appears before you, for better or worse. It's a humanoid about 2,5 metres tall, clad in black, but that's all you can make out of the figure.
It's attacks are unnaturally fast, it's reach long and it seems that it can attack you with it's tentacles, cutting you with them and letting you bleed. (This is a B-rank monster. Also please note that defeating it means that it does not die. Instead it escapes back into the mist, which gets raised soon after, and leaves behind several torn pages).
Reward: 1,000 jewels. If the boss has appeared and was defeated, the extra reward is part of the ripped pages from the diary received in the beginning of the mission. Those pages grant access to the next Nightmare Incarnate mission.

Ni-Ju arrived at the southeast corner of the Spooky Forest aboard a small farmer's cart, just as the sun began to set. Gathering his pack and weapon from the cart, he thanked the wagon driver for his help and hopped down. Ni-Ju then watched patiently as the driver continued on his way east towards Beanstalk Village, lighting a torch and entering the forest only after he was absolutely sure the man was well on his way. Once in the forest proper he stopped for a moment to prepare himself and review what the contents of the package had revealed. Several people were missing. At least one demonic entity was involved. And a group of armed rune knights had attempted to put the matter to bed and found themselves playing second fiddle to whatever was the cause of this whole mess. Ni-Ju found himself suddenly glad that he had taken three times as long to gather his supplies for this job.

"Demons! Had to be frickin demons." Ni-Ju whispered aloud, stabbing his torch into the ground and unshouldering his weapon and pack. Opening the pack he grabbed the extra twine he had gathered specifically for the purpose and securely tied the end to a large oak before closing and reshouldering his pack. This entire affair stunk to high heaven and even the prepared could suffer a bout of bad luck. Or at least thats what his old man had been prone to saying during the few times when his long years of service to the priesthood hadn't managed to cover for a mistake. Shaking off the thought as distracting, Ni-Ju tucked the bundle of twine in his belt and picked up the torch and his shotgun. Continuing forward cautiously proved a sound decision as his first dozen steps were met with a multitude of increasingly thick foilage that made it seem as if every bare inch gained was something that would have to be won, tooth and nail, from nature itself.

Pushing his way through a particularly stubborn bush with his torch held above, Ni-Ju suddenly felt the cold sensation on his right ankle that sent shivers working their way down his spine. With that being the only warning he would get, Ni-Ju's left leg shot out from under him as some mysterious force began to drag him through the forest, paying no mind to the numerous scratches and bruises dealt to him in the process. A large chunk of upthrust shale ripped the torch from his fingers, leaving him suddenly shrouded in darkness. With his only source of light rapidly fading into the distance, Ni-Ju began to get truly frightened. Any thoughts of hopelessness he might have had were then brought to a quick and tragic end as the back of his head came into contact with a hard metal object that lay across the path, sending him spinning into unconsciousness.

Ni-Ju awoke a short while later with a massive headache, lying on the ground. Feeling around in the dark, he quickly realized that the twine that served as he best means of escaping the forest should something happen that couldn't be handled by a single mage was missing, gone from his belt in the chaos that had placed him here. Ignoring the bleak thoughts that gave him, Ni-Ju began taking stock of his inventory as best as possible in the utter blackness. The Friendmaker had been lost in the forest. Probably never to be found considering the convoluted path that whatever had attacked him had taken. Luckily enough his pack had held up to the rough trip through the undergrowth and remained full of the basic supplies he had packed in case the journey went sour. Rifling through the bottom of the pack, Ni-Ju was delighted to find that his new weapon, The Balin, was still in the box where he had placed it before everything began.

Grabbing the gun and tucking it into his waistband so that it would be close at hand, Ni-Ju began searching through the pack for the small tin of matches he had originally brought to light the torch with. Searching by touch, Ni-Ju couldn't help but dwell on the how very stupid he was for not having the brains to pack a spare torch after all the careful planning he had done where this job was concerned.Ni-Ju found the matches after several frenzied minutes of fumbling and cursing. Opening the tin and striking one of the blue tipped matches against the inside brought the world into startling clarity. Hurriedly grabbing a handful of dead leaves and moss from the stones nearby, Ni-Ju formed a small pile in the center of the rocky ground that served as the floor of the little grotto where he had been awoken and, using the match, attempted to get a suitable size fire going to stave off the night.

Managing to get the fire going after several near heart rending failures, Ni-Ju plopped down beside it to enjoy the fruits of his labors. Occupied with warming his hands and feeding the fire, he was caught off guard as the sound of a woman screaming echoed through the foggy night air. Ni-Ju rushed to his feet, nearly knocking the fire over as he drew his weapon and began pointing it out of the mouth of the little stone and dirt hole that now served as his temporary shelter.Shouting into the fog proved fruitless as nothing more then silence answered his cries . More disturbed now then ever by the turn of events since entering the forest, Ni-Ju returned to his fire and sat with his back against the stone side of the grotto so that he would only have to watch in one direction. With gun in hand, Ni-Ju watched as lady luck once again deserted him. It began to rain.

Cursing to himself over the untimely arrival of bad weather, Ni-Ju climbed back to his feet and shrugged the coat from his shoulders to plug the hole that now threatened the survival of his fire. Stepping out into the rain, Ni-Ju spread his coat over the bracken that formed the right side of the grotto and began smearing mud and leaves atop it to help make it as water tight as the situation would allow. As he adjusted the fit of his makeshift patch the sound of a stick cracking behind him caused Ni-Ju to turn around and look. Peering into the fog he was startled to see a disheveled looking young woman with a large streak of red running down the front of her dress stumbling through mists with a look on her face as if she had seen something that was so bad that it had made a permanent impression.

Overcoming his sudden urge to run and help the obviously distressed woman due to the wariness this place had begun to instill, Ni-Ju instead tried for the safer route and attempted to call out to her over the sounds of the storm. "Excuse me miss! Are you hurt!?". Seeming to hear him only faintly as though in some form of shock, the woman began to mumble to herself in a low voice that he could barely make out over the crashing of thunder. "Must.......run.....find the edge.". Spotting no weapons or other obvious means of danger on her helped make up his mind. When it came down to it there was just no way that he would be able to forgive himself if he left someone who was in a predicament worse then his own to fend for themselves. Approaching her carefully so as not to frighten, Ni-Ju beckoned for the woman to follow him back into the grotto.

Staring him full in the face for the first time as they entered the circle of firelight, she ceased her murmuring and crumpled to the ground as if poleaxed. Moving to her side, Ni-Ju watched helplessly as the woman began convulsing. Elevating her head to help prevent her from hurting herself while thrashing, Ni-Ju sat and waited for whatever was happening to pass. Time seemed to stretch out as the woman sat lifelessly with her head resting on his lap, giving Ni-Ju plenty of opportunity to think. This woman's breathing was shallow and judging by the paleness and lack of response from her a healing mage or a good doctor would need to have a look at her if she was going to survive through the night. Cursing the inability of his magic to do anything other then break things, Ni-Ju began to mull over what options remained to him.

With no means to carry her with both the unsteady footing from the rain and the sheer thickness of the growth in this forest, Ni-Ju had to settle on setting her up as well as possible and going for help himself. The only close place he could think of given the circumstances was the trade road he had taken to get here in the first place and from there he could call Sim and go get assistance. His thoughts went round and round as to what he should do before he finally gave it up. He needed to act or this woman would suffer because of it and sitting here wasn't helping. Propping her head up with his emptied pack and covering her as well as possible with his vest, Ni-Ju set about getting ready for the trek. Using two handkerchiefs, the oil that was normally reserved for his shotgun, and the few pieces of semi dry wood that he could scrounge up, Ni-Ju made a half dozen serviceable torches.

With a lit torch in one hand and Balin in the other Ni-Ju set off through the forest once again, although this time his goal was clear if not his destination; get to the trade road as fast as humanly possible. Finding a bit of of torn cloth from the bottom of his coat hanging low in a bush after his first five minutes of trudging sent Ni-Ju's spirits soaring. This had to be the way that he had been dragged from. The combination of rain, fog, and years of unchecked growth made it slow going at best and out right abysmal at some moments. One would think that with how thickly the trees grew together that it would prove to at least somewhat deter the falling of the water but the case proved quite the opposite as the rain seemed to fly sideways using the the closeness of the trees to funnel wind and water directly into Ni-Ju's face.

As Ni-Ju fought his way through the elements, he began to hear what sounded like whispering voices riding the wind. Each strange voice talked of dark things. Frightening things the likes of which he had never heard and never wished to hear. The voices continued to surround him as though each of the speaker's were standing right next to him, whispering into his ear. Ignoring the voices proved unfruitful and plugging his ears seemed to do nothing to silence them either. As the whispering finally became unbearable, Ni-Ju strangely enough found himself remembering something his father had said to him many times when he was younger. Standing in the tall dignified manner which never seemed to leave him even when home from work, his father had sat him down on the edge of the wooden porch surrounding their small home and tried to explain why it was that they could never return to the country of his birth.

"The people who run our once great land decided long ago that anyone born with the ability to use magic is a taint upon the fabric of nature itself and therefor have no right to live." His father informed him, never for a moment shaken in his poise. "Now you my son have been gifted with a very special ability not to harm but to bring help and happiness to those in need. Thus there can be no taint. When it comes down to the very bones of what bars our passage, it is merely words. But remember this very carefully my son. The right words spoken at the proper moment can save a man's eternal soul or drive him to the brink of madness. ". Gaining renewed vigor from the thought, Ni-Ju began to chant aloud. "It's only words. Its just words.". Stopping at a large clump of bushes to catch his breathe gave Ni-Ju yet another surprise and an unwelcome one at that. Hanging from the bushes, low to the ground, was a small piece of cloth from the bottom of his coat.

He had gone around in a circle. He just couldn't believe it. Not in the normal sense because he was obviously where he was but the logical side of his brain just wouldn't buy it. After all, his course through the woods had been a fairly straight line and he hadn't deviated for anything so the chances of going in a circle were exactly zero. That was unless whatever it was that had grabbed him earlier had more then one iron in the fire. A flicker of movement in the mist caused Ni-Ju to redirect his attention away from both the voices that continued tormenting him and their connection to whatever was making this forest so hellish to escape from. From just ahead of him beyond the fog, Ni-Ju could see what looked to be a set of eyes, blacker then the darkness around them that sent chills running down his spine.

Fed up with everything and frightened beyond belief by whatever it was that was watching him, Ni-Ju panicked and did something he had never done before. Lose all sense of focus while casting a detonation. The bare soil underneath the creature suddenly and inexplicably became stone for fifty feet in all directions as Ni-Ju's magic catalyzed part of it's bond but didn't break it's elemental matrix. Seeing his magic fail him when it was most needed changed any thoughts he might have had about trying to fight the creature. Firing Balin towards the creature, Ni-Ju began to run away through the fog as fast as his legs would carry him. It suddenly seemed as if the forest had come alive and was out to get him as randomly dropped sticks and other small bits of debris began to float up off the ground to bar his passage and sharp bits of stone began pelting him.

Everything at this moment seemed as bad as it could possibly be for Ni-Ju as the voices increased their volume to an all time high and the way remained blocked. Unsure of what to do but not wanting to stay around and get stoned to death, Ni-Ju made a quick decision that went against all of his instincts and turned again to try and run his way past the creature instead. He was left nearly breathless as the woman that he was in the process of saving appeared in front of his path."Where are you going young man!? I thought that you were going to save my life!!!" She screamed, revealing a mouth filled with razer sharp fangs and a forked snaked like tongue. Charging forward and firing Balin as fast as possible at the horrid thing that had fooled him, Ni-Ju found himself once more surprised as his shots went through it as if it were made of smoke.

Seeing the woman disappear caused Ni-Ju to have a startling revelation. This place thrived upon fear. It need it. So all the things that had happened thus far had been part of whatever was doing this's plan. Rather then scared, Ni-Ju became incredibly angry. "Nothing gets to control me but ME!!!" He yelled, rushing back towards where his casting had failed. Passing the unnatural stone that he created without issue, Ni-Ju continued forward. If this thing was going to get him then it would take more then a few cheap parlor tricks and some scares for the kiddies. From out of the corner of his eye, Ni-Ju could see the creature flitting through the fog ahead of him. Seeking to turn him about as if he were a sheep being corralled by it's Shepard. Ignoring the chills down his spine from every glimpse of the creature, Ni-Ju ignored it and continued to run.

Stumbling over something partially buried in the ground and twisting his ankle as he entered a small clearing, Ni-Ju stopped for a moment to asses the damage. Hunching down to check his ankle, Ni-Ju was startled to find that what he had tripped over was the remains of a body. Disregarding the wound as too minor to effect anything, he decided to use this small break and check over the remains. From the initials on his collar and and the state of the uniform this body could be none other then the man who was on the lacrima recorder that had been sent with the journal. Thinking it over for a second, Ni-Ju was able to come up with a name to match. One Jacob Lars if his memory served him correctly. Checking over the rest of the clearing resulted in finding three other such bodies all of which looked to have been sliced open by something incredibly sharp.

With at least that mystery solved, Ni-Ju had some sense of satisfaction out of the mess that this job had become. Ruining his moment like some sort of joy killing machine, the dark eyed creature continued it's pursuit of him through the forest, dogging his every step time and time again. In an effort to both keep himself happy and stave off whatever that thing was Ni-Ju began taking shots with Balin at anything that moved as he passed by. The sound of his gun discharging and the acrid smell of burnt ozone it always left worked as if it were a stimulant, causing Ni-Ju to run forward faster with every new shot he fired. In the distance ahead he could see what he thought was just another clearing until he hit the wood's edge. As the tree's stopped,Ni-Ju found himself back where he had first stupidly decided to enter the forest.
