Wolfe jumped out of the train, excited to be going on her first guild job! She couldn't wait to get started. The job request had only stated that a man in Clover Town had a farm that he would like to have weeded and take care of some minor infestations. Even though the pay wasn’t much, she knew this would be a great experience. She followed the directions on the paper, soon coming to a small farm. She walked up to the front door and an older man answered. “Hello sir! My name is Wolfe and I’m answering your request for some help tending to your farm. I’m from the Cor Draco guild.” The old man’s eyes lit up and he walked out of the house. “Oh good! I’m so glad someone came! I've lost my trusty helper, such a tragedy. And on top of that, the crops are growing weeds and bugs are coming. I can only handle so much of the field work before I can't work anymore. I need someone to help kill all the bugs in the crop fields, spray all the weeds, and clean out... the farm house. Please... be careful in there, we have a bit of a... rat problem. My helper was going to get to it, before….” He sighed and looked away. “Before he what sir? Did he…. Pass?” “No, Miss. He won the lottery. Anyways…. I need to go to town for the day, and I’ll be back at sunset. Do you think you can clean this place up alone before then?” Wolfe nodded, “Don’t worry Sir! I’ll have this place cleaned up for the new crops in no time! I wish you well on your errands!” She waved to him as he snatched a pack from inside his house and left for Clover Town. Wolfe turned to survey her task. This was looking to be harder than she thought…

She turned to the crops first with a sigh. Wolfe went to the nearby shed and grabbed the rake, some gloves, a shovel, and some pesticide. If she was going to have multiple things to do, she didn’t want to be walking back and forth to the shed, wasting daylight! She mixed the pesticides, filled the sprayer that they go in, and filled the rest of it with water. “I wonder why the bottle says to use so little?” Wolfe sniffed the concoction and quickly regretted it, feeling a bit light headed. “Yup! That stuff is strong! Wow…. I think I need to sit for a minute.” She closed the lid and flopped down onto the ground, leaning away from the poison. She already could tell the farmer had meant business! That stuff nearly knocked her out! Just how big were those bugs!
“Ok. I feel a bit better now…. Time to work!” She stood and dusted off her butt, then surveyed the field once more. She acted like she was rolling up her sleeves and snatched up the gloves. Slipping them on her hands, she smirked at her newest adversary.

Just then, the Cor Draco mage saw just why she needed such strong pesticide. There, at the edge of the field, was a gigantic insect! It looked like a very large praying mantis, with even larger pincers. She looked at her measly little pesticide sprayer and paled. This was NOT going to be enough. “Ok. I guess I’ll have to do this the old fashioned way and squash you like the bug you are!” She tried to keep a straight face, but broke out into peals of laughter at her own joke. While she was distracting herself, the bug crawled closer. It didn’t know much, but it knew this tall thing with missing legs and no shell was a danger to its home. It clacked its pincers. This got Wolfe’s attention and she quickly unscrewed the lid to the pesticide. When the bug was within range, she splashed it with over half the poison. The bug flipped onto its back, then made a scream-like noise. Its legs curled inward and in moments it was dead. “That wasn’t too har-…….” She spoke too soon. Seeing their fellow bug killed by some mere water, the rest of the bugs in the field became enraged. They stormed forward, their collective pincers making a “shing” sound. Wolfe’s eyes grew wide and she tossed the rest of the bug killing “water” at them, then ran for the bottle that the concentrated poison was in. She tried to reach for it, but a mantis bug sliced through the plastic, spilling the pesticide into the ground.

Wolfe jumped back and held her hand out in front of her. “Whiplash!” A vine appeared and she grabbed it, swinging her arm back, then she swung it in front of herself, hitting most of the bugs. The ones that had been splashed by the pesticide died, and the remaining mantis bugs lost legs and wings. Her vine whip disappeared and she moved back into a defensive stance. She frowned, hoping to have killed them all with that attack. She raised her arms above her head and whipped them down. “Stinging Rain!” The rest of the bugs were slaughtered by the onslaught of cherry blossom petals. Wolfe smiled to herself, and went to the shed and grabbed the wheelbarrow. She gathered the bugs into a pile at the edge of the field. She would burn this when she was finished with the weeds and the rat problem in the cellar. At the faucet, she took a long drink, then wiped her mouth. She stretched, causing her back to pop. Looking first at the field, then at the farm house, she muttered, “Which should I work on next? Take a break from the field and tend to the cellar, or finish the field and be done with it?”

With a shrug, Wolfe grabbed the rake and strode to the field. Better to get this over with than to be walking back and forth. She looked up at the sky, the sun was directly overhead. “Noon already? I better hurry up!” She started with the little weeds, able to quickly pluck them from the earth. It would have been an odd sight to see, how even though they were out of the soil, the weeds seemed to keep growing, just from Wolfe’s touch. She threw them into the wheelbarrow, then started on the larger weeds. These took her quite a bit longer for each plant. The roots went deep, and even with her trying to coax the plants to let go of their hold on the earth, it was slow going. If that farmer had asked her to farm for him, not weed, this whole job would have gone a lot faster. Wolfe pulled harder at an especially stubborn weed, when suddenly… POP! The root gave out and broke, sending the mage flat on her rear. She scowled and muttered a few choice words to the plant, then pushed a little magic into the ground. The weed quickly regrew from the root still in the ground. This time, when she pulled, the plant slipped out of the hole, like it had done all that previously just to make her fall.

Wolfe plodded on, her sweat falling consistently now. It seemed like the farther into the field she went, the bigger the plants, the more stubborn the roots. She fell onto her butt more than once. She was sure that her rear end was bruised from landing on a particularly sharp rock. Finally, she threw the last weed into the wheelbarrow and dumped it at the mini-mountain of rubbish. Wolfe dusted off her hands and began walking to the farm house. “I wonder why the old man was so afraid of the cellar…. I mean it’s just a bunch of rats, right? Or maybe it’s one big rat! I hope it doesn’t like vegetables….. I don’t want it eating my vines instead of being hurt by them… What if it gets energy or power or something from eating!” She mused the entire way to the building, her stories getting wilder and wilder. She threw open one of the cellar doors at the side of the house and walked in. It was dark inside, so she shut the door again so her eyes could adjust. They weren’t yet fully adjusted when she was thrown against a wall by something fleshy but hard. She coughed and saw stars for a moment, but then shook them clear, searching for her adversary. In front of her, sharp teeth dripping with saliva bared, beady red eyes staring straight at her, was a giant rat. It was at least as big as a dog, not one of the big dogs, but one of the medium sized ones. It made a very un proportionate squeak at her then lunged.

Wolfe couldn’t dodge in time this time, and one of the claws scratched her arm. She grimaced and held her palm out, summoning a vine. “Whiplash!” She arced her arm down, the vine cutting into the flesh on the rat’s back. It screamed, and charged at her. She jumped straight over it, relaxing for impact, rolling with her momentum. She popped up and spun, facing the rat again, panting. The rat turned and charged again, and Wolfe dodged to the left this time. She held her hands close to her, then opened them. “Dreaming Fragrance!” A pink flower appeared in her hands, and the pollen made its way to the rat. It charged right into the cloud, not realizing its mistake till it was too late. In moments, the rat stopped moving and stood there, dazed, dreaming about a rat paradise, or at least that’s what Wolfe chose to believe it was dreaming. The plant-make mage, instead of immediately dispatching it like she should have, she walked around the cellar, looking for something other than her bare hands with which to do the deed.

She found a hatchet, and that was it. “Who keeps tools in their cellar?....” She pondered this as she quickly walked to the rat. It was coming to, and she knew if it gained complete consciousness, she would be screwed. She whispered, “I’m sorry…” and plunged the hatched into the base of the rat’s skull, effectively killing it. She searched some more and found a cloth, which she used to wipe the blood off the cutting edge of the tool before returning it to its place. She did a cursory search of the cellar, but found no more rats. “Maybe this big one ate the other rats?...” Wolfe took the rat by its thick, rope-like tail and ascended the stairs into the twilight. She closed the cellar doors, then dragged the rat to the pile of refuse. She struck a match that she had snagged from the cellar and lit the pile, watching it burn to nothing but ashes. Just then she heard the gate at the front of the house open and she made her way over. The farmer waved to her. “So how did you fair? I see the Rat King gotcha!” He chuckled as he motioned to her arm, which she then grabbed in a way to hide it. “Yeah, he did. But you don’t need to worry about him anymore! He is in a better place, I think.” The old man looked almost surprised, then he lit a torch and walked around his house, inspecting the job she had done. When he came back he was smiling. He walked inside his home. A minute later he came out with a coin purse. “1,500 Jewel, just as promised! Thank you, Miss. Now I’ll be able to grow some real plants instead of those weeds.” Wolfe grabbed the money, and after a few more pleasantries, and she left, planning on taking a nice hot shower in a hotel, then heading back to the guild in the morning.
